BACKGROUND: For over a decade, drug overdose has been the leading cause of injury and accidental death in the United States. Most fatal overdoses involve opioids and occur during solitary drug use events when no one is available to initiate lifesaving responses (eg, naloxone). While there is a growing interest in devices providing early overdose detection and automated responses, little research has engaged end users in a device design process.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe user experience, perceived harms and benefits, and the acceptability of a shoulder-mounted wearable sensor among people who inject drugs who wore a device prototype …

We describe a patient who underwent AV node modification to create complete heart block in the setting of incessant, ablation-and-drug-refractory, symptomatic atypical atrial flutter. His dual chamber defibrillator (previously implanted for resuscitated cardiac arrest) was programmed to the VVIR mode at a faster pacing rate of 85 bpm. Serendipitously, this rate was an almost exact factorial of his flutter rate of 250-260 bpm. This resulted in every 6th flutter wave falling in the supernormal period, resulting in fixed-coupled supraventricular bigeminy and trigeminy in the setting of complete heart block. Reprogramming the pacing rate to 75 bpm abolished bigeminy and trigeminy.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess the comparability of mean sensitivity (MS) values obtained using the Macular Integrity Assessment (MAIA; CenterVue S.p.A. [iCare], Padova, Italy) and Microperimeter-3 (MP-3; NIDEK CO., Ltd., Gamagori, Japan) microperimetry (MP) devices.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study includes subjects with healthy eyes, eyes with diabetes mellitus without diabetic retinopathy (DM no DR), diabetic retinopathy (DR), and non-exudative age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Patients underwent testing on both MAIA and MP-3 MP devices, using a 10-2 macular grid with 68 stimuli and identical parameters. A diagnosis-adjusted linear regression model and mixed modeling mapped MP-3 MS to …

The Woven EndoBridge (WEB) device is FDA-approved for the treatment of bifurcation aneurysms. Despite its wide popularity, it has been under scrutiny for its association with potential aneurysm recanalization and retreatment due to device shape modification. This study aims to analyze the shape modification rate of WEB devices and identify factors associated with this phenomenon, as well as its correlation with aneurysm retreatment. We conducted a retrospective review of the WorldWide WEB Consortium database, including adult patients treated for intracranial aneurysms with the WEB device. We assessed aneurysm occlusion using the WEB Occlusion Scale and defined WEB shape modification as …

The Woven EndoBridge (WEB) device is primarily used for treating wide-neck intracranial bifurcation aneurysms under 10 mm. Limited data exists on its efficacy for large aneurysms. We aim to assess angiographic and clinical outcomes of the WEB device in treating large versus small aneurysms. We conducted a retrospective review of the WorldWide WEB Consortium database, from 2011 to 2022, across 30 academic institutions globally. Propensity score matching (PSM) was employed to compare small and large aneurysms on baseline characteristics. A total of 898 patients were included. There was no significant difference observed in clinical presentations, smoking status, pretreatment mRS, presence …

Aim: Use long-term follow-up data from the IMPERIAL study to determine whether drug-eluting polymer-based nitinol stent treatment can delay the time to repeat intervention for femoropopliteal artery disease and how such a delay may result in cost savings in a value-based episode of care. Patients & methods: The IMPERIAL randomized controlled trial was an international study of a paclitaxel-eluting polymer-coated stent (Eluvia, Boston Scientific, MA, USA) versus a polymer-free paclitaxel-coated stent (Zilver PTX, Cook Corporation, IN, USA) for treating lesions of the femoropopliteal arterial segment. Study patients (n = 465) had symptomatic lower limb ischemia. Safety and efficacy assessments were …

Effects Of Ultrasonic Use On Hearing Loss In Dental Hygienists: A Matched Pairs Design Study, Jessica Suedbeck, Emily A. Ludwig, James Blando, Nathan Michalak
Dental Hygiene Faculty Publications
Purpose: Dental professionals are exposed to hazardous noise levels on a daily basis in clinical practice. The purpose of this study was to compare the hearing status of dental hygienists who utilize ultrasonic scalers in the workplace compared to age-matched control participants (non-dental hygienists) who were not exposed to ultrasonic noise.
Methods: A convenience sample of nineteen dental hygienists (experimental) and nineteen non-dental hygienists (control) was recruited for this study. A matched pairs design was utilized; participants in each group were matched based on age and gender to eliminate confounding variables. The testing procedure consisted of an audiologist performing a …
