Purpose: Retrospective chart reviews in ophthalmology are essential for gaining clinical insights, but they remain labor-intensive and prone to error. Despite digitization through electronic health records, extracting and interpreting lengthy, unstructured patient histories remains challenging, particularly in ophthalmology, which relies heavily on both imaging and text-based reports. We introduce OphthoACR, a Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act-compliant artificial intelligence (AI)-powered tool for automated chart review and cohort analyses in ophthalmology. Methods: OphthoACR was applied to extract 16 variables of increasing task difficulty from the complete chart histories of 91 patients who underwent secondary intraocular lens surgery at the Columbia University …

PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare the effect of establishing an inferior vena cava filter (IVCF) retrieval program (IVCFRP) on the IVCF retrieval rates in trauma and non-trauma patients. METHODS: This was an institutional review board-approved retrospective study. IVCF retrieval in trauma and non-trauma patients was compared before and after the establishment of an IVCFRP in a single Level I Trauma Center. The IVCFRP at our institution was established in April 2020. All patients who underwent IVCF placement between January 2016 and March 2020 were compared with patients who had an IVCF placed between April 2020 and June 2024. A …

Oncolytic virotherapy has shown great promise in mediating targeted tumor destruction through tumor-selective replication and induction of anti-tumor immunity; however, obstacles remain for virus candidates to reach the clinic. These include avoiding neutralizing antibodies, preventing stimulation of the adaptive immune response during intravenous administration, and inducing sufficient apoptosis and immune activation so that the body's defense can work to eradicate systemic disease. We have developed a co-formulation of oncolytic viruses (OVs) with Imagent lipid-encapsulated, perfluorocarbon microbubbles (MBs) to protect the OVs from the innate and adaptive immune system. Once inside the MB, the viral particles become acoustically active such that …

Introduction: The use of prosthetic mesh in hernia repair provides a powerful tool to increase repair longevity, decrease recurrence rates, and facilitate complex abdominal wall reconstruction. Overall infection rates with mesh are low, but for those affected there is high morbidity and economic cost. The availability of a practicable small animal model would be advantageous for the preclinical testing of prophylactics, therapeutics, and new biomaterials. To this end, we have developed a novel mouse model for implantation of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus–infected surgical mesh and provide results from antibiotic and immunotherapeutic testing. Materials and Methods: Implantation of surgical mesh between fascial …
