Rubber dam isolation is crucial in providing sterility and a controlled environment when performing root canal therapy. Rubber dam clamps have been controversial due to their rigidity and composition, which is thought to cause damage to zirconia full coverage crowns. This study evaluated three types of zirconia crowns anterior 5Y, premolar 4Y, and molar 3Y to assess their resistance to damage from rubber dam clamps. Of the 30 total zirconia crowns that were tested for damage following the usage of rubber dam clamps, no fractures or chips were observed. There was no significant difference between the negative control group, and …

Evaluation Of Different Resin-Based Barriers In Reducing Microleakage In Restoratively Compromised Posterior Teeth During Rubber Dam Isolation: An Ex Vivo Study, Carolina Becerra, Albert F. Mcmullen Iii, Joon Koh, Thomas E. Lallier Jul 2025

Evaluation Of Different Resin-Based Barriers In Reducing Microleakage In Restoratively Compromised Posterior Teeth During Rubber Dam Isolation: An Ex Vivo Study, Carolina Becerra, Albert F. Mcmullen Iii, Joon Koh, Thomas E. Lallier

Introduction: The rubber dam has been a standard in endodontic practice for over 140 years, providing critical isolation to prevent microbial contamination during root canal therapy. However, studies indicate that microleakage between the rubber dam and tooth structure may still occur, potentially leading to bacterial infiltration. Various resin-based barriers have been introduced to enhance isolation and minimize leakage. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of four resin-based barriers in reducing microleakage during endodontic procedures. Methods: Forty extracted human mandibular molars were selected, stored in distilled water, and standardized for experimental conditions. Standard endodontic access was created, and the mesiobuccal …

Comparing Gutta Percha Backfill Leakage Over Multiple Heating Cycles, Hannah Battle, Thomas E. Lallier, Landon Boenke, Albert F. Mcmullen Iii Jul 2025

Introduction: Warm vertical compaction of gutta-percha is a commonly used obturation technique due to the material’s thermoplastic properties. However, gutta-percha in backfill systems is often heated, cooled, and reheated multiple times before use, potentially altering its physical properties. This study investigated whether repeated heat cycling affects the sealing ability of gutta-percha, as measured by coronal dye leakage. Methods: Forty extracted single-rooted human teeth were cleaned, shaped, and randomly divided into four groups (n = 10) based on the number of heating cycles the gutta-percha underwent prior to obturation: Group A (1 cycle), Group B (3 cycles), Group C (5 cycles), …

Effect Of Access Cavity Preparation And Cement On The Fracture Load Of Translucent Zirconia Crowns, Andrea Fenton, Amir H. Nejat, Edwin Kee, Xiaoming Xu, Albert F. Mcmullen Iii Jun 2025

Effect Of Access Cavity Preparation And Cement On The Fracture Load Of Translucent Zirconia Crowns, Andrea Fenton, Amir H. Nejat, Edwin Kee, Xiaoming Xu, Albert F. Mcmullen Iii

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of endodontic access hole preparation and choice of luting cement on the fracture resistance of translucent zirconia (5Y) crowns. Materials and Methods: Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) dies, representing a prepared maxillary molar tooth, were milled. Translucent zirconia crowns were milled from 5Y (Cercon XTML) zirconia discs and sintered. Forty crowns were divided into four groups (n = 10 per group) based on access hole preparation (accessed, non-accessed) and type of luting cement (resin cement, resin modified glass ionomer (RMGI) cement). Crowns were cemented on the PMMA dies with either resin cement (Panavia SA Cement Universal, Kuraray Noritake …

Effect Of Endodontic Access Preparation On The Retention Of Zirconia Crowns With Temporary Or Permanent Access Hole Restorations: An In Vitro Study, J. Nick Sanders, Amir H. Nejat, Peter Dupree, Edwin Kee, Madeleine E. Raymond, Fred Mcmullen May 2025

Raymond, Fred Mcmullen

School of Dentistry Faculty Publications

Objectives: To evaluate the effect endodontic access preparation had on the retention of anterior zirconia crowns after restoring the access hole with temporary versus permanent restorative materials. Methods: 30 anterior zirconia crowns were milled from 5Y-TZP zirconia and bonded to a 3D printed die with resin cement. Crowns were randomly divided into three groups including negative control (NC, n = 10) with no endodontic access preparation; positive control (PC, N = 10) received endodontic access preparation and was restored with a temporary restorative material (Cavit); composite restoration (CR, N = 10) received an endodontic access preparation and then the access …

The Effect Of Different Surface Treatments On The Roughness, Translucency, And Staining Of 3d-Printed Occlusal Device Materials, Silvia Rojas Rueda, Hanna Sepsick, Mohammed Hammamy, Amir H. Nejat, Edwin Kee, Nathaniel C. Lawson Apr 2025

The Effect Of Different Surface Treatments On The Roughness, Translucency, And Staining Of 3d-Printed Occlusal Device Materials, Silvia Rojas Rueda, Hanna Sepsick, Mohammed Hammamy, Amir H. Nejat, Edwin Kee, Nathaniel C. Lawson

OBJECTIVES: To compare surface treatments (as-printed, optical polish, resin-coated, polished) of two 3D-printed occlusal device materials (KeySplint Soft and NightGuard Flex 2) cured with or without glycerin for surface roughness, translucency, and coffee staining. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Discs (2 mm thick) from two 3D-printed occlusal resins (KeySplint Soft and NightGuard Flex 2) were printed using a DLP 3D printer (SprintRay Pro 95), cleaned (ProWash S), and cured (ProCure 2) with or without glycerin. Some specimens were printed in an optical polish tank. Specimens were either as-printed, resin-coated, or polished. Reference milled (ProArt CAD Splint) and heat-cured (Excel Formula Heat Cure …
