Closing The Loop: Strengthening Cauti Prevention With Urinary Catheter Management, Erika N. Braun Aug 2026

Closing The Loop: Strengthening Cauti Prevention With Urinary Catheter Management, Erika N. Braun

Master's Projects and Capstones

Objective: Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) are among the most common preventable healthcare-associated infections and are associated with significant patient harm and increased healthcare costs. Baseline assessment across five adult cardiovascular and critical care units within a community-based acute care hospital identified four CAUTI events during the first half of 2026 and revealed important nursing knowledge deficits related to bladder scanning protocols and urinary catheter management practices. Aim: This Quality Improvement (QI) Project aimed to improve nursing knowledge of evidence-based bladder scanning protocols and urinary catheter management practices through targeted educational interventions implemented over a 10-week period, with …

Impact Of Supply Organizational Culture Within A Surgical Unit, Irene T. Peng Dec 2024

Impact Of Supply Organizational Culture Within A Surgical Unit, Irene T. Peng

Master's Projects and Capstones

Objective: This quality improvement project aims to propose an intervention that helps anesthesia technicians improve communication efforts, reduce delays in care, and reduce medical waste. Aim: At least 80% of the anesthesia technicians are educated on properly stocking the pediatric anesthesia medical lockers utilizing the standardized checklist and handoff report tool to reduce waste and increase timely patient care after three months of implementation. Methods: Assessment surveys were used to identify the surgical unit’s current issues and Hospital A’s staff's opinions of pediatric medical anesthesia C-lockers. Resources such as the GANTT Chart, Fishbone Analysis, Budget Analysis, SWOT Analysis, and PDSA …

Implementing Nurse Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Specialists To Maintain A Sustainable Program, David L. Boyd May 2022

Implementing Nurse Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Specialists To Maintain A Sustainable Program, David L. Boyd

DNP Qualifying Manuscripts

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) offers hope for patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome when other treatment methods fail. However, ECMO requires continuous hourly management leading to extremely high operating costs. With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the high number of patients on ECMO led to a significant increase in the costs when using perfusionists to manage ECMO. Switching to a nurse-driven model resulted in a 52% decrease in costs related to the hourly management. Changing to a nurse-driven program provided increased nursing support and sustainability, and with determination and support, other ECMO centers can change to nurse-driven programs too.

Counting Every Drop: Preventing Maternal Mortality With Quantifying Blood Loss Through Triton Scale, Summer Le May 2022

Counting Every Drop: Preventing Maternal Mortality With Quantifying Blood Loss Through Triton Scale, Summer Le

Master's Projects and Capstones

Postpartum (PP) hemorrhage is one of the leading causes of maternal mortality (AWHONN, 2021). In each of the past three years, the percentage of PP hemorrhage has increased at Hospital X. The PP unit at Hospital X performs around 4,500 total deliveries each year. While the standard of care for PP blood loss is to specifically measure blood in milliliters as Quantifying Blood Loss (QBL) for Labor and Delivery (L&D), it is not yet the standard of care in the 24 hours postpartum after delivery (ACOG, 2019). This quality improvement project involved educating nurses about measuring blood loss – specifically …

Increasing Continuous Positive Airway Pressure Compliance With Various Telemedicine Interventions: An Integrated Literature Review, Tracy Partington Dec 2021

Increasing Continuous Positive Airway Pressure Compliance With Various Telemedicine Interventions: An Integrated Literature Review, Tracy Partington

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Aims and Objectives. This literature review's objective was to synthesize evidence from previously published literature on telemedicine interventions' effectiveness on CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) therapy compliance.

Background. It is estimated that 22 million Americans suffer from a form of Sleep Apnea (SA), and those up to 80 percent of the cases of moderate to severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) are undiagnosed (Sleep Apnea, n,d). The first-line therapy for OSA is CPAP. However, CPAP therapy is associated with low compliance rates.

Design. Systematic review.

Method. A multi-database literature search was conducted to identify published literature between 2009 and 2020. …

Assessment Of Falls On A Medical-Telemetry Unit, Andie Reed Dec 2017

Assessment Of Falls On A Medical-Telemetry Unit, Andie Reed

Master's Projects and Capstones

The purpose of this quality improvement project aimed at reducing falls on a medical-telemetry unit in a large metropolitan Magnet hospital. It was important for the MSN/CNL students to focus on falls because it is not just a concern for this institution, it is a national dilemma that needs to be addressed. Due to the complexities and intricate details of the IRB process, the MSN/CNL students were unable to collect data or further advance their project into the microsystem. Instead, information was attained from the University of San Francisco database to allow the MSN/CNL students to continue with the steps …

Safe Patient Handling & No Lift Policy: Reducing The Incidence Of Work-Related Injuries Among Nursing Staff, Marissa N. Scanlon Dec 2014

Safe Patient Handling & No Lift Policy: Reducing The Incidence Of Work-Related Injuries Among Nursing Staff, Marissa N. Scanlon

Master's Projects and Capstones

Background: Patient handling is a major risk factor for work-related injuries among nurses. Inadequate and inappropriate safe patient handling practices contribute to increased work-related injuries, lost/restricted work days, and hospital costs.

Purpose: The focus of this study was to increase the use of mechanical lift equipment and Lift Team to reduce the incidence of work-related injuries among nursing staff involved in patient handling activities on the Medical-Cardiac IICU.

Methodology: The theoretical framework employed for this project was Lippitt’s change theory. Pre-and post-survey self-report evaluations were conducted prior to and following the implementation of the Bedside Mobility Assessment Tool (BMAT) and …
