BACKGROUND: Dural hemangiomas are a relatively rare form of intracranial mass, as hemangiomas tend to present in bone or as intraparenchymal lesions and only around 5%-13% have been reported to originate from the dura mater. Here, the authors present the case of a 46-year-old female who underwent craniotomy for a suspected convexity meningioma resection, which was unexpectedly found to be a dural capillary hemangioma. OBSERVATIONS: The patient was a 46-year-old female who presented with a left frontal intracranial mass found incidentally and showed significant growth over 4 years. Objective. This study was conducted to determine whether utilization of the superior root of ansa cervicalis (SRAC) as the donor for phrenic nerve (PN) transfer is technically feasible. Background. In patients with high cervical spinal cord injury resulting in diaphragmatic paralysis, another donor, the spinal accessory nerve, has been used successfully to reinnervate the PN and restore diaphragmatic function. BACKGROUND: Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) and continuous subcutaneous insulin infusions (CSIIs) are the current standard treatment devices for type 1 diabetes (T1D) management. With a high prevalence of T1D beginning in pediatrics and carrying into adulthood, insufficient glycemic control leads to poor patient outcomes. Dermatologic complications such as contact dermatitis, lipodystrophies, and inflammatory lesions are among those associated with CGM and CSII, which reduce glycemic control and patient compliance.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an autosomal recessive genetic disorder, affecting multiple organ systems. CF intestinal disease develops early, manifesting as intestinal bacterial overgrowth/dysbiosis, neutrophilic inflammation, and obstruction. As unresolvable infection and inflammation reflect host immune deficiency, we sought to determine if the CF-affected immune system plays any significant role in CF intestinal disease pathogenesis. This case report describes a patient with a history of multiple sclerosis (MS) and optic neuritis, who presented with acute onset of generalized abdominal pain. The patient was ultimately diagnosed with cecal volvulus requiring emergent laparotomy and right hemicolectomy. This case highlights the relationship between neurogenic bowel dysfunction (NBD) associated constipation in patients with MS and intestinal volvulus. Additionally, this case demonstrates the importance of NBD associated constipation management through various modalities including laxative regimens, behavioral and diet modification, and reduction of polypharmacy, with an emphasis on individualized patient management.

Intravitreal injections of antivascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) agents (bevacizumab, ranibizumab, and aflibercept) show good efficacy and similar incidences of systemic adverse events (SAEs). Patients are typically middle-aged females with an elevated BMI presenting with chronic pain. Physical examination reveals soft subcutaneous nodules and masses, tender to palpation. The associated pain significantly impacts quality of life and requires therapeutic intervention. The most common treatment option is surgical excision. This study aims to develop and evaluate radiomics-based machine learning (ML) models for predicting meningioma grades using multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The study utilized the BraTS-MEN dataset's training split, including 698 patients (524 with grade 1 and 174 with grade 2-3 meningiomas). We extracted 4872 radiomic features from T1, T1 with contrast, T2, and FLAIR MRI sequences using PyRadiomics. LASSO regression reduced features to 176. Disease-modifying therapies are standard of care (SOC) for sickle cell disease (SCD), but hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) has curative potential. We compared outcomes prospectively through 2-years after biologic assignment to a Donor or No Donor (SOC) Arm based on the availability of an HLA-matched sibling or unrelated donor (BMTCTN 1503; NCT02766465). A donor search was commenced after eligibility confirmation. The primary endpoint was the comparison of survival 2 years after biologic assignment between treatment arms. Zygomycetous fungal infections pose an emerging medical threat among individuals with compromised immunity and metabolic abnormalities. Our pathophysiological understanding of these infections, particularly the role of fungal cell walls in growth and immune response, remains limited. Here we conducted multidimensional solid-state NMR analysis to examine cell walls in five Mucorales species, including key mucormycosis causative agents like Rhizopus and Mucor species. We show that the rigid core of the cell wall primarily comprises highly polymorphic chitin and chitosan, with minimal quantities of β-glucans linked to a specific chitin subtype. Drug-induced liver injury is one of the most common causes of acute liver failure in the Western world. Despite discontinuation of the offending agent, it can still tax a grim prognosis. We describe a case of a menopausal woman taking a herbal supplement to relieve hot flashes and bloating. This is the first case report of liver injury from this supplement. She initially presented with mild jaundice and elevated transaminases. Unfortunately, she rapidly progressed to encephalopathy, experienced multiorgan failure, and then died.

Background: An emerging paradigm suggests that positive Cutibacterium acnes shoulder cultures can result from either true infection or contamination, with true infections demonstrating a host inflammatory response and early culture growth. This clinical retrospective study examines the relationship between C. acnes antigen, C. acnes culture results, and inflammation.

Methods: From January 2021 to July 2023, 1,365 periprosthetic synovial fluid samples from 347 institutions were tested for shoulder infection at a centralized clinical laboratory.
