One Toke Over The Line: The Proliferation Of State Medical Marijuana Laws, Troy E. Grandel Dec 2010

One Toke Over The Line: The Proliferation Of State Medical Marijuana Laws, Troy E. Grandel

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] “Marijuana has been used for medicinal purposes for at least five thousand years. In fact, it was used medicinally in the United States up until the twentieth century when antidrug zealots managed to prohibit it. Prohibition was the status quo until 1996 when California became the first state to adopt a law allowing medicinal marijuana use. Since then, thirteen additional states, along with the District of Columbia, have enacted similar laws. More states are now lining up with their own laws, which are in various stages of adoption. In addition, the Supreme Court has impacted the issue, both with …

Background: Isolated fucoidans from brown marine algae have been shown to have a range of anti-inflammatory effects. Purpose: This present study tested a Maritech® extract formulation, containing a blend of extracts from three different species of brown algae, plus nutrients in an open label combined phase I and II pilot scale study to determine both acute safety and efficacy in osteoarthritis of the knee. Patients and methods: Participants (n = 12, five females [mean age, 62 ± 11.06 years] and seven males [mean age, 57.14 ± 9.20 years]) with a confirmed diagnosis of osteoarthritis of the knee were randomized to …

Linnaeus Turns 300... Carl Linnaeus, Hans Wohlmuth

Dr Hans Wohlmuth

The article highlights the celebration of the 300th birthday of Carl Linnaeus, or Carl von Linne (as he is known in Scandinavi). Three centuries after his birth Linnaeus remains among the most famous and influential Swedes of all time, indeed his fame as a naturalist is eclipsed only by the great Charles Darwin (1809-1882).

Healthcare In Cuba, Carmen M. Cusack J.D. Oct 2010

Healthcare In Cuba, Carmen M. Cusack J.D.

Carmen M Cusack

Poor Americans who lack health-insurance or have little opportunity to access specialized or non-emergency medical treatment in the U.S. should be permitted by the U.S. State Department to spend money in Cuba in order to receive inexpensive medical treatment, and should be allowed to stay (and spend) in Cuba as long as necessary in order to receive inexpensive medical treatment. If Americans were permitted by an exception in the Helms-Burton Act to spend money in Cuba and visit for medical purposes, then Cuba would likely treat these Americans for a very low cost. This can be argued because 1) Cuba …

Antioxidant Capacity Of 55 Medicinal Herbs Traditionally Used To Treat The Urinary System: A Comparison Using A Sequential Three Solvent Extraction Process, Ken Wojcikowski, Lesley Stevenson, David Leach, Hans Wohlmuth, Glenda Gobe Oct 2010

Antioxidant Capacity Of 55 Medicinal Herbs Traditionally Used To Treat The Urinary System: A Comparison Using A Sequential Three Solvent Extraction Process, Ken Wojcikowski, Lesley Stevenson, David Leach, Hans Wohlmuth, Glenda Gobe

Dr Hans Wohlmuth

Background: The prevalence of chronic renal disease exceeds 10% in industrialized societies. Oxidative damage is thought to be one of the main mechanisms involved in nearly all chronic renal pathologies. Objective: We aimed to use the oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) method and a sequential multisolvent extraction process to compare the in vitro antioxidant capacity of 55 medicinal herbs and prioritize them for in vivo studies investigating the value of herbal therapies in the treatment of renal disorders. Methods: The herbs were chosen on the basis of their traditional use in kidney or urinary system disorders, or because they have …

Background: To determine the effects of supplemental fish oil (FO) on resting metabolic rate (RMR), body composition, and cortisol production in healthy adults.

Methods: A total of 44 men and women (34 ± 13y, mean+SD) participated in the study. All testing was performed first thing in the morning following an overnight fast. Baseline measurements of RMR were measured using indirect calorimetry using a facemask, and body composition was measured using air displacement plethysmography. Saliva was collected via passive drool and analyzed for cortisol concentration using ELISA. Following baseline testing, subjects were randomly assigned in a double blind manner to one …

Percepciones De Género En La Medicina Mapuche: Machi, Matriarca, Y Colonización, Krista Douglass

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Gender is a social ordering principle; a definition of masculinity and femininity according to an individual culture. While in Chile gender identity is often shaped by machismo, the Mapuche cosmovision is without gender disparities. Rather, relationships between men and women are governed by principles of equality and duality, just as the Mapuche deities balance both male and female energies. Women hold very important roles in the community as the leaders of the medical community. Although both men and women participate in various roles within this profession, machi, the spiritual healers, are mostly women. Males, or wentru machi, …

La Medicina Alternativa En Oaxaca: Su Coexistencia Con La Medicina Alópata, Katie Deeg

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The Future Of Tradition: An Ethnographic And Comparative Study Of Social Preference And Medicine In Rural Ghana, Shannon Dick Oct 2010

The Future Of Tradition: An Ethnographic And Comparative Study Of Social Preference And Medicine In Rural Ghana, Shannon Dick

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

In Ghana, there are currently two prevalent forms of medical treatment: traditional and Western medicine. Since Ghana was colonized by the British, Western medicine has spread throughout the country, essentially from south to north. In this ethnographic study, two rural villages are compared, one located in the Central Region and the other in the Upper West Region, in order to evaluate what type of medical treatment people prefer and the reasons for their decisions. The research assesses the social inclination in terms of medicine in these two locations, indicators of Western influences, and gleans a sense of what the future …

Recent research conducted by the National Prescribing Service (NPS) has shown the need for improving complementary medicines (CMs) information availability and awareness for Australian health professionals and consumers. CMs information resources have been reported to be of variable quality, with some identified as inaccurate or misleading. To date, there has been no comprehensive evaluation of available information resources to help the Australian community make better informed decisions around the quality use of CMs, in order to meet the demand for high quality information on CMs.
