Tattoos And Trauma: Are Tattoos Healing For Trauma?, Krystal Bell
Tattoos And Trauma: Are Tattoos Healing For Trauma?, Krystal Bell
University Honors Theses
Prior research and literature reviews suggest that there is medicinal value in tattooing for the healing of trauma. However, tattooing is still a burgeoning topic in academic studies and still mostly taboo as a western societal practice, so there are gaps in qualitative and quantitative data that could further validate the healing benefits of tattoos for trauma. This literature review analyzed 30 peer reviewed articles that focus on "contemporary tattoo data," "indigenous traditions and practices," "tattoos and trauma," and other alternative healing such as "MDMA, psilocybin, EMDR" to establish a well-rounded investigation into tattoos as an alternative healing option. The …
An Exploration Of Health Coaching Models And Their Efficacy In Chronic Disease Management: A Literature Review, Sofia Gallamore
An Exploration Of Health Coaching Models And Their Efficacy In Chronic Disease Management: A Literature Review, Sofia Gallamore
University Honors Theses
Amidst the rise of chronic condition prevalence in recent decades, the field of health coaching has presented itself as a feasible complementary treatment method in chronic condition prevention and management. This literature review analyzes various clinical health coaching practices and their effectiveness in improving health behaviors and clinical outcomes in patients with chronic conditions. Eight studies were compared, with particular attention directed towards the evaluation of coaching techniques and modes of delivery. It was discovered that successful health coaching practices use a combination of Motivational Interviewing (MI), self-efficacy, and goal setting. Furthermore, programs that incorporated in-person intake sessions, followed by …
The Psychedelic Renaissance: A Convergence Of Indigenous Knowledge And Science, Ronan K. Peck
The Psychedelic Renaissance: A Convergence Of Indigenous Knowledge And Science, Ronan K. Peck
University Honors Theses
In recent times, psychedelics have come back into the public eye, mostly through scientific intrigue about their healing potential. In the past decade, hundreds of studies have been conducted to explore the possible benefits, or risks, that these substances could bring to people – and there is great potential being found. This is the psychedelic renaissance, and with this phenomenon in full swing, it is important to take a step back and look at the full picture of our history with these substances. By doing so, it starts to become clear that psychedelics have guided human perception and understanding of …
Potential Therapeutic Effects Of Snake Venom Components On Pain Management In Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients, Maggie Metzger
Potential Therapeutic Effects Of Snake Venom Components On Pain Management In Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients, Maggie Metzger
University Honors Theses
This paper reviews the existing literature on the uses of snake venom in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and pain management. Venom from the families Elapidae and Viperidae have been shown to have anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. The analgesic findings of research on arthritis murine models are discussed, and the existing uses of snake venom in medicine to suggest the therapeutic potential of venom in the pain management of rheumatoid arthritis are taken into account. Snake venom has anti-inflammatory effects by reducing levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and increasing levels of anti-inflammatory cytokines. Additionally, snake venom can reduce structural damage from …
Outcome Analysis Of Tranexamic Acid In Thromboembolic Complications And Coagulation Factors, Hunter A. Mccorkle
Outcome Analysis Of Tranexamic Acid In Thromboembolic Complications And Coagulation Factors, Hunter A. Mccorkle
University Honors Theses
Background: Tranexamic acid (TXA) is an antifibrinolytic used for controlling hemorrhaging in patients. It’s regular application in trauma centers could be vital in reducing all-cause mortality for hemorrhaging secondary to traumatic injury but there are still concerns about possible side effects and populations at greater risk of complications. The possible use of predictive measures such as thrombelastography (TEG) and conventional coagulation testing (CCT) in detecting early markers of TXA risks are still unconfirmed, and unfortunately there is a time restriction of 3 hours for TXA to be effective in reducing all-cause mortality.
Objective: Our objective is to observe outcomes of …
The Effects Of Green Smoothie Consumption On Blood Pressure And Health-Related Quality Of Life: A Randomized Controlled Trial, Emiko Maeda
Dissertations and Theses
Chronic diseases are among the leading causes of death globally, and as much as 80% of these deaths are reported to be preventable with proper diet and lifestyle. Although extensive research has demonstrated that the increased consumption of fruits and vegetables offers protective health effects from many chronic illnesses, populations in both developed and developing nations consistently fall short of the recommended intake of 5 or more servings a day. This study investigated the effects of daily consumption of Green Smoothies for 4 consecutive weeks on blood pressure and health-related quality of life. Green Smoothies are a blended drink consisting …
Physicians Providing Alternative Medicine: Boundary Crossing And The Emergence Of Integrative Medicine, Richard Scott Lockwood
Physicians Providing Alternative Medicine: Boundary Crossing And The Emergence Of Integrative Medicine, Richard Scott Lockwood
Dissertations and Theses
Integrative medicine (IM) has organized as a new area of specialization in mainstream healthcare. The development of IM is widely attributed to popular demand for the range of therapies known collectively as Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM). During the 1990's the rate of acceptance of CAM accelerated among consumers, professions, financing and education. The Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) measured CAM utilization and professional service provision during the years 1996 and 1998, but never since. These surveys were unique because they specifically inquired as to whether CAM was provided by a physician, among other types of professionals. This dissertation defines …
