The American Dental Association and American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry encourage oral health professionals to strongly recommend human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination to prevent HPV-associated oropharyngeal cancer. This study examined oral health professionals' knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding HPV vaccination. We used purposive sampling to recruit participants through state and national oral health societies and social media platforms. Flyers outlining eligibility criteria were distributed, and eligible participants completed an online survey. Primary measures included participants' HPV-related knowledge, attitudes, and practices, and willingness to receive HPV-related training and recommend HPV vaccination to patients, including parents of adolescents. Food insecurity is a growing public health concern with significant implications for adolescent mental health. This literature review provides an overview of current research on the relationship between food insecurity and adolescents’ mental health in the United States. A literature review was completed to identify studies examining the association between food insecurity and anxiety, depression, or attention deficit disorder (ADD)/Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Background: High-risk medications such as opioids and benzodiazepines are frequently prescribed in pediatric dental care, yet their prescribing patterns and associated adverse outcomes remain poorly understood. The aim of this study was to determine the extent of such prescribing to pediatric patients and factors associated with adverse outcomes.

Methods: MarketScan data for patients younger than 18 years with a dental visit from 2014 through 2019 were analyzed. High-risk medications included benzodiazepines, barbiturates, and opioids. Composite outcomes included hospitalization, emergency department visit, or urgent care visit within 7 days after the dental visit. MECOM rearrangements (MECOM-r) are acute myeloid leukaemia (AML)-defining, regardless of blast percentage or MECOM fusion partner. We sought to investigate if blast percentage or MECOM-r partner was associated with overall survival (OS). We included 152 adult patients with newly diagnosed MECOM-r and classified blast percentage into < 20% or ≥20% and MECOM-r partner into classic (GATA2::MECOM) or variant (others). Thirty-one per cent had < 20% blasts, with 69% having ≥20%; 57% had classic and 43% variant MECOM-r. Treatment was with intensive chemotherapy (IC) in 41% and low-intensity therapy (LIT) in 59%. Composite complete remission rates were similar between IC (50%) and LIT (48%, p = 0.99). The median OS was 17 months (95% confidence interval [CI], 12-not estimable [NE]) for < 20% blasts, compared with 9 months (95% CI, 6-10) for ≥20% blasts (p <  0.01). On multivariate analysis, ≥20% blasts were associated with worse OS (hazard ratio [HR] 1.9, [95% CI, 1.2-3.2], p <  0.01), independent of age, MECOM-r partner, additional cytogenetic abnormalities, treatment intensity, addition of venetoclax and stem cell transplant (SCT). HR for IC was 2.0 (95% CI, 1.1-3.7, p = 0.03). In < 20% blasts, variant MECOM-r was independently associated with a reduced hazard of death (HR 0.2 [95% CI, 0.1-0.8], p <  0.01). MECOM-r AML is a heterogenous entity; consideration should be given to LIT approaches.

Background: Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a rare complication of solid organ transplantation and is a syndrome of systemic hyperinflammation secondary to dysregulation of the inflammatory response, primarily involving lymphocytes and macrophages. It is often fatal and therefore early recognition and treatment are crucial. Among 11 adult cases of HLH in post-lung transplant cases found in the literature, only one patient survived.

Case: We report the first known pediatric case of HLH following lung transplantation. Objectives: School nurses are key responders to students with constipation, yet their experiences are underreported. This study surveyed their observations regarding constipation, identified barriers to student restroom access, and assessed educational needs.

Methods: In this descriptive, cross-sectional survey study, an anonymous online survey was distributed to school nurses participating in a virtual education series. The survey assessed nurse demographics, frequency of encounters with constipation and encopresis, school restroom policies, barriers to restroom use, accommodation requests, and training in constipation management.

Findings: Of 125 respondents, 95% encountered students with constipation at least monthly and 55% reported ≥ 6 encounters monthly. Commonly …

Background: Barth syndrome (BTHS) is an ultra-rare, X-linked genetic disorder for which there is limited economic data. Because compiling such data that target rare indications is difficult, we assessed real-world data to increase understanding of the cost of BTHS based on disease burden and health care resource utilization (HCRU).

IMPORTANCE: Pediatric obesity rates are rising, and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) may contribute by promoting stress-induced weight gain. Few studies have examined the association of ACEs with body mass index (BMI) and youth-reported protective factors, particularly among Latinx and Hispanic youths, who face higher rates of ACEs and obesity.

Modeling studies of LF transmission suggest that conducting MDA twice a year could accelerate LF elimination. Background: Vaccine hesitancy has been a significant concern throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Vaccine hesitancy can be attributed to lack of confidence in vaccines, complacency about the health threat, or lack of convenience of vaccination. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to characterize contemporary surgical management practices and factors influencing surgical decision-making in the management of Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome (LGS) across pediatric epilepsy centers in the United States.

METHODS: A 45-item cross-sectional survey was developed and distributed to Pediatric Epilepsy Research Consortium centers. Domains included institutional demographics, surgical evaluation timing and goals, presurgical workup, procedural utilization and outcomes, and barriers to surgery. Descriptive statistics and thematic analysis were performed.

We previously demonstrated biological age acceleration in pediatric-onset MS (POMS) compared to controls with both epigenetic clocks (DNAm) and telomere length (TL). BACKGROUND: Mucopolysaccharidosis II (MPS II) is a rare, progressive, X-linked lysosomal storage disease. Enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) with intravenous (IV) idursulfase has been approved for the treatment of patients with MPS II since 2005. The Hunter Outcome Survey (HOS; NCT03292887) was established as a condition of approval to monitor the long-term safety and effectiveness of idursulfase. Here, we report the final results from HOS.

Hepatotoxicity is a well-documented complication of induction chemotherapy for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), but our understanding of its biological mechanisms is limited. We identified 314 patients with ALL (aged 1-19 years) treated at Texas Children’s Hospital (2008-2019) with diagnostic bone marrow plasma available for metabolomic profiling: 234 for discovery and 80 for replication. Hepatotoxicity during induction was defined as follows: (1) transaminitis: grade ≥3 aspartate aminotransferase or alanine aminotransferase or (2) conjugated hyperbilirubinemia: conjugated bilirubin (c.bili) >3 mg/dL. BACKGROUND: Despite improving outcomes, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) remains associated with high rates of acute brain injury, impacting survival and outcomes. Clinical imaging modalities, including computed tomography and standard-field magnetic resonance imaging (≥1.5 Tesla), have either limited early detection of ischemic-type injuries or are incompatible with ECMO, causing diagnostic delays. A Food and Drug Administration-cleared ultra-low-field portable magnetic resonance imaging (pMRI; 0.064 Tesla) has shown promise in acute brain injury detection and use with MRI-unsafe equipment, but pediatric ECMO data are limited.

During the COVID-19 pandemic early years, infection prevention measures suppressed transmission of seasonal influenza and other respiratory viruses. The early onset and moderate severity of the US 2022-2023 influenza season may have resulted from reduced use of nonpharmaceutical interventions or lower population immunity after 2 y of limited influenza virus circulation. We used a mathematical model of influenza virus transmission that incorporates vaccine-derived protection against both infection and severe disease to estimate the impact of influenza vaccines on healthcare burden. Polypyrimidine tract-binding protein 1 (PTBP1) is a heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein primarily known for its alternative splicing activity. It shuttles between the nucleus and cytoplasm via partially overlapping N-terminal nuclear localization (NLS) and export (NES) signals. Despite its fundamental role in cell growth and differentiation, its involvement in human disease remains poorly understood. We identified 27 individuals from 25 families harboring de novo or inherited pathogenic variants - predominantly start-loss (89%) and, to a lesser extent, missense (11%) - affecting NES/NLS motifs. This study aims to describe the levels and sources of dietary sodium intake among Nigerian adults to inform these policies. Background: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and intravenous (IV) ketamine are treatments used for severe depression and/or treatment-resistant depression (TRD). ECT is considered one of the most effective treatments for severe depression, although there is debate within the field regarding the effectiveness between ECT and IV ketamine in comparable TRD patient groups.

Methods: This retrospective chart review of open-label, nonrandomized treatment from a psychiatric hospital compared the effects of up to three weeks of ECT and IV ketamine in patients with major depressive episodes (MDEs). Infection is increasingly recognized as a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with relapsed/refractory (R/R) large B-cell lymphoma (LBCL) receiving CD19 chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy. The current study analyzed the natural history, risk factors, and outcomes of infection in 3350 patients with R/R LBCL receiving commercial CD19 CAR T-cell therapy (n = 2804 axicabtagene ciloleucel [axi-cel], n = 546 tisagenlecleucel) from December 2017 to June 2022. Tisagenlecleucel (tisa-cel) is a CD19-directed chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy for relapsed/refractory precursor B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (R/R B-ALL). We report infectious complications for 100 days (D100) following tisa-cel therapy in 471 pediatric and young adults (median age 13.8 years) with R/R B-ALL reported from September 2017 to June 2022. By D100, 137 (29%) patients had an infectious event, with an infection density of 0.542 per 100 person-days at risk. D100 cumulative incidences of bacterial, viral, and fungal infections were 14.1%, 11.6%, and 1.3%, corresponding to infection density scores of 0.296, 0.213, and 0.033 per 100 person-days at risk, respectively. …
