Violent injury is among the leading causes of death in adolescents. Adolescents' immaturity and underdeveloped impulse control put them at risk of acting rashly, thus at higher risk for violent injury. This significant public health problem is a preventive objective of Healthy People 2000. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of an educational intervention on adolescents' knowledge and attitudes about violence. The nurse practitioner in a school or family clinic is in a unique position to intervene with adolescent clients using an educational intervention. Orem's Self-Care Deficit Theory served as the theoretical framework for the research. …

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility, safety and diagnostic accuracy of dobutamine stress echocardiography (DSE) for evaluating posttransplant coronary artery disease (TxCAD) in children, and to determine the frequency of selected cardiac events after normal or abnormal DSE.

BACKGROUND: Posttransplant coronary artery disease is the most common cause of graft loss (late death or retransplantation) after cardiac transplantation (CTx) in children. Coronary angiography, routinely performed to screen for TxCAD, is an invasive procedure with limited sensitivity. The efficacy of DSE for detecting atherosclerotic coronary artery disease is established, but is unknown in children after CTx. …

OBJECTIVES: This study was undertaken to investigate the incidence of posttransplant recoarctation of the aorta, delineate the mode of presentation, identify risk factors that predict recoarctation and examine the results of intervention for posttransplant recoarctation.

BACKGROUND: Patients with aortic arch hypoplasia require extended arch reconstruction at transplant, with an inherent possibility of subsequent recoarctation of the aorta.

Over the three months of this study, the subjects were detained 24 hours per day, every day at a residential center for sex offenders. Of the four subjects, three received medications for nocturnal enuresis while the other one received medication for hyperactive behavior. The time interval between nocturnal events increased for the recipients of sensitivity training. This study was a three-month study without follow up. The increased interval may be explained by two other confounds that were not measured: 1) the clients who had the longer intervals at the end of the study were also on medication, which possibly contributed …

BACKGROUND: Systemic sclerosis is a disease of unknown origin which often occurs in women after their childbearing years. It has many clinical and histopathological similarities to chronic graft-versus-host disease. Recent studies indicate that fetal stem cells can survive in the maternal circulation for many years post partum. This finding suggests that fetal cells persisting in the maternal circulation or tissues could be involved in the pathogenesis of systemic sclerosis by initiating a graft-versus-host reaction.

OBJECTIVES: This study examines the impact of the condom availability program in New York City public high schools by comparing rates of sexual activity and condom use for New York students and similar students in Chicago. METHODS: A total of 7119 students from 12 randomly selected New York schools and 5738 students from 10 Chicago schools participated in a cross-sectional survey. RESULTS: New York students, compared with Chicago students, reported equal rates of sexual activity but higher rates of condom use at last intercourse (odds ratio [OR] = 1.36). BACKGROUND: This study addresses the yield and clinical impact of computed tomography (CT) imaging in otherwise asymptomatic patients with stage III melanoma metastatic to the regional nodes.

METHODS: The database from the University of Michigan Mutlidisciplinary Melanoma Clinic was reviewed and identified 127 asymptomatic patients with stage III melanoma (regional nodal disease) who received CT scans of the head, chest, abdomen, and/or pelvis. Scans were confirmed as true positive, false positive, and normal.

The Delaware Division of Public Health reported only two cases of documented meningococcal infection in the pediatric population in 1992. As of March 1, 1993, the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report indicated only one case of meningococcal disease in the state of Delaware for 1993. However, from the end of February to early April 1993, approximately six weeks, there were seven cases of documented meningococcal infection in the pediatric population that either presented or were transferred to one of the pediatric care facilities in the Wilmington, Delaware area. The majority of cases of childhood typhoid fever diagnosed in the United States occur in persons recently returned from travel abroad. We report two childhood cases of typhoid fever acquired in Mexico and India and diagnosed in an urban United States setting. This report describes these cases and provides insights into the pitfalls in recognizing this condition in a nonendemic setting as well as information concerning differential diagnosis and treatment.

Animal bites have become alarmingly common and may represent a quiet epidemic. It is estimated that between 1 and 3.5 million animal bites occur annually in the United States. The highest incidence has consistently been in 5-to-14-year-old schoolchildren, who have greater contact with animals, especially house pets, on a daily basis. This article discusses the epidemiology, microbiology, clinical findings and management of animal bites infections.

This descriptive study was designed to determine the need for education about adolescent sexuality for public health nurses (PHNs) in Mississippi. Two null hypothesis were stated. Hypothesis I stated that when the nurses' levels of education and attitude scores on the Adolescent Knowledge and Attitude Questionnaire were correlated, there would be no significant correlations at the .05 level. Native peoples of the New World, including Amerindians and admixed Latin Americans such as Mexican-Americans, are highly susceptible to diseases of the gallbladder. These include cholesterol cholelithiasis (gallstones) and its complications, as well as cancer of the gallbladder. Although there is clearly some necessary dietary or other environmental risk factor involved, the pattern of disease prevalence is geographically associated with the distribution of genes of aboriginal Amerindian origin, and levels of risk generally correspond to the degree of Amerindian admixture. This pattern differs from that generally associated with Westernization, which suggests a gene-environment interaction, and that within an admixed population …

The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to determine the differences in sexual knowledge and attitudes between public health nurses who participated in a short-term sexuality course and public health nurses who did not participate in a human sexuality course. The Sex Knowledge and Attitude Test (SKAT, Parts I and II) was used as a data collecting tool. The sample was taken from districts of the Mississippi State Board of Health. The experimental group took the SKAT following a four-hour human sexuality course. The control group took the SKAT without any educational exposure. The hypothesis stated that there would be …

A predicted association between family relations and cognitive development and the emergence of adolescent egocentrism was explored in this study. A sample of seventh grade boys (n=131) and girls (n=120) completed Elkind and Bowen's Imaginary Audience Scale (a measure of egocentrism) and selected items from Heilbrun's Parent-Child Interaction Rating Scale and Schaefer's Parent-Behavior Inventory. A modified version of Lawson's Classroom Test of Formal Operations was used to measure cognitive development. Contrary to a theoretical based hypothesis a negative rather than positive relationship was found between level of formal operational thought egocentrism.
