T Helper 2 Cell-Directed Immunotherapy Eliminates Precancerous Skin Lesions, Tomonori Oka, Neel S. Raval, Mary Tabacchi, Lynn A. Cornelius, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

The continuous rise in skin cancer incidence highlights an imperative for improved skin cancer prevention. Topical calcipotriol-plus-5-fluorouracil (calcipotriol-plus-5-FU) immunotherapy effectively eliminates precancerous skin lesions and prevents squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in patients. However, its mechanism of action remains unclear. Herein, we demonstrate that calcipotriol-plus-5-FU immunotherapy induces T helper type 2 (Th2) immunity, eliminating premalignant keratinocytes in humans. CD4+ Th2 cells were required and were sufficient downstream of thymic stromal lymphopoietin cytokine induction by calcipotriol to suppress skin cancer development. Th2-associated cytokines induced IL-24 expression in cancer cells, resulting in toxic autophagy and anoikis followed by apoptosis. Calcipotriol-plus-5-FU immunotherapy was dependent …

Meta-Ea: A Gene-Specific Combination Of Available Computational Tools For Predicting Missense Variant Effects, Panagiotis Katsonis, Olivier Lichtarge Jan 2025

Meta-Ea: A Gene-Specific Combination Of Available Computational Tools For Predicting Missense Variant Effects, Panagiotis Katsonis, Olivier Lichtarge

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Computational methods for estimating missense variant impact suffer from inconsistent performance across genes, which poses a major challenge for their reliable use in clinical practice. While ensemble scores leverage multiple prediction methods to enhance consistency, the overrepresentation of certain genes in the training data can bias their outcomes. To address this critical limitation, we propose a gene-specific ensemble framework trained on reference computational annotations rather than on clinical or experimental data. Accordingly, we generate Meta-EA ensemble scores that achieve comparable performance to the top individual predicting method for each gene set. Incorporating the effects of splicing and the allele frequency …

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Prostate cancer is a heterogeneous disease with a spectrum of pathology and outcomes ranging from indolent to lethal. Although there have been recent advancements in prognostic tissue biomarkers, limitations still exist. We leveraged matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization imaging of formalin-fixed, paraffin embedded prostate cancer specimens to determine if N-linked glycans expressed in the extracellular matrix of lethal neuroendocrine prostate cancer were also expressed in conventional prostate adenocarcinomas that were associated with poor outcomes. We found that N-glycan fucosylation was abundant in neuroendocrine prostate cancer as well as adenocarcinomas at the time of prostatectomy that eventually developed recurrent metastatic disease. Analysis of …

Lusaka's Colonial Legacy: Town Planning, Public Health, And The Making Of A Segregated City, 1913–1963. A Study Of Power, Inequality, And Urban Development, Wamburakwao J. Sapao

Zambia Social Science Journal

This paper explores the intersection of town planning and public health policy in Lusaka, Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia), during the colonial period (1913–1963), which was a time of significant urban growth and transformation. British colonial authorities adapted Ebenezer Howard's Garden City principles to design and manage Lusaka, but these measures perpetuated spatial control, segregation, and social engineering, thus exacerbating racial and socio-economic disparities. By analysing secondary and primary sources, including planning ordinances, zoning regulations, and public health policies, this study reveals how these measures shaped the city's development and reinforced inequalities. Despite colonial intentions for a white settler-city, Lusaka evolved …

Pediatric Approaches For Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Ashley Riha

Student Research Poster Presentations 2025

Abstract

Pediatric magnetic resonance imaging is often challenging due to the lack of cooperation and the inability to fully understand the expectations required for the examination. Children are often restless and may have difficulty remaining still for a long period of time. This can lead to motion artifacts and compensate diagnostic value. Due to these reoccurring challenges, there are several strategies to help relax the nerves of pediatric patients. Sedatives can be administered to relax the patients and assist in cooperation during the long scanning times. However, sedation safety, dosage, and patient monitoring is essential when administering medication. Alternative approaches …

Transpersonal Philosophy Grows Up: A Clarification Of Ken Wilber’S Most Recent Updates To His Theoretical Framework, Ritske Rensma Jan 2025

Transpersonal Philosophy Grows Up: A Clarification Of Ken Wilber’S Most Recent Updates To His Theoretical Framework, Ritske Rensma

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive

The fact that there are multiple phases to Ken Wilber’s theoretical development has been widely recognized, with Wilber himself arguing that his works can be divided into four distinct phases (1983/2001). Students of Wilber’s work later added a fifth and final phase, which is said to begin in 2001. What has received hardly any scholarly attention, however, is the fact that Wilber still made major changes to his theoretical framework several years after the beginning of phase 5 in Integral Spirituality (2006), and that it is only after the publication of this book that his thinking really reaches a steady …

Unitlessness: Highlighting The Trans-Discursive Qualities Of Nondualism And Implications For Psychological Terminology, Christian U. Krägeloh Jan 2025

Unitlessness: Highlighting The Trans-Discursive Qualities Of Nondualism And Implications For Psychological Terminology, Christian U. Krägeloh

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive

Nondual awareness has recently gained increased interest in broader psychological research. In meditation contexts, it reflects the dissolution of subject and object, while in Maha_ya_na Buddhism, practitioners aim to develop insight that leads to awareness of nonduality in everyday-life situations. Traditionally, teaching of nondualism employed paradoxes to prompt nonconceptual inquiry into reconciling dualistic contradictions. To offer an approach to communicate nondualism to a modern audience of psychology researchers, the framework of unitlessness is introduced here, which differentiates between linguistic characteristics (units) and experiential phenomena (unity), both within an enveloping ineffability (unitlessness). This type of nondualism is trans-discursive, as it acknowledges …

The Stages Of Change Model As Applied To Cluttering: Next Steps, Kathleen Scaler Scott, Samantha Delmar, Sarah Hardy, Emma Schaedler, Erica Scheinberg, Kateri Grice, Brenna Field, Margaret Koester, Emma Maley, Kayla Montemarano, Brooke Price

Student Research Poster Presentations 2025

This study is based upon the Transtheoretical/Stages of Change model. The model has been studied in adults with a variety of health behaviors such as addiction (Prochaska, 1999; Prochaska &DiClemente, 1984) and has been applied to current stuttering treatment (Zebrowski et al., 2021) to assess readiness for change. The Stages of Change model consists of five stages: precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance. Whenever considering making a change, as one would do as part of speech therapy, clients may move in and out of these stages. Therefore, it is important to understand what stage a client is in in order …

METHODS: A comprehensive review of historically described approaches, proof of concept of surgical technique in …

The Nondual Realization Of Advaita Vedanta Does Not Support A Psychological Theory Of Consciousness, Glenn Hartelius Jan 2025

The Nondual Realization Of Advaita Vedanta Does Not Support A Psychological Theory Of Consciousness, Glenn Hartelius

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive

Advaita Vedanta is seen as something of an authoritative source for nondual philosophies and theories of consciousness that postulate a pure featureless awareness at the base of mental experience. These approaches deviate from both the lineage-based teachings of Advaita Vedanta and the necessary standards of science, constructing compromises that fall short of traditional fidelity and psychological rigor. Dialogues between psychology and Advaita Vedanta need to delineate clearly between a sensate phenomenology of experience and spiritual interpretations that may be implicit within experiential descriptions.

The Head, The Heart, And The Human: A Developmental Cascade Perspective Of Adults With Dextro-Transposition Of The Great Arteries, Alexandra Brooke Roseman

Selected Full-Text Dissertations 2020-

As survival rates for individuals with complex congenital heart disease (CHD), such as dextro-Transposition of the Great Arteries (d-TGA), increase, there is a growing need to examine neurocognitive and psychosocial challenges from a lifespan perspective. However, research often overlooks the integration of these factors, despite evidence from other chronic illness populations suggesting their interplay influences psychosocial functioning in adulthood. This study assessed psychosocial maturity in emerging adults with d-TGA and explored its relationship with executive functioning (EF) and social cognition (SC) longitudinally. Data were drawn from the Boston Circulatory Arrest Study (BCAS) cohort at age 16 (n = 80) and …

Beyond The Numbers: A Qualitative Exploration Of Patient Perspectives On Postpartum Care And Maternal Mortality, Kristen A. Waters Jan 2025

Beyond The Numbers: A Qualitative Exploration Of Patient Perspectives On Postpartum Care And Maternal Mortality, Kristen A. Waters

Master of Public Health Program Student Publications

Introduction

Montgomery County faces one of Ohio's highest maternal mortality rates, with notable disparities by race. Despite their importance in reducing maternal deaths, up to 40% of women nationwide do not attend a postpartum care (PPC) visit. While well researched guidelines exist regarding the content and timing of PPC visits, there is a lack of patient perspective on this topic, specifically in the Black-identifying population in an area with a significant burden of maternal mortality.

Methods

Semi-structured interviews and focus group sessions were conducted with 31 participants of maternal health community events in Dayton, OH. Participants were asked their opinions …

The Integration Of Video Recording In Health Assessment Simulation To Improve Feedback Quality, Stephanie Bork, Meredith Deegan, Allison Gregory

School of Nursing Publications

Introduction

Simulation-based learning is integral in preparing nursing students, especially graduate-level nurse practitioner (NP) students. Simulation bridges the gap between theory and practice, providing a safe space for students to practice clinical skills, communication, and develop appropriate clinical judgment and reasoning before delivering care to patients in healthcare settings. Video recording in the simulated environment enhances educators’ ability to assess student competency and performance. During a faculty-observed simulation, it can be challenging to deliver consistent, meaningful, and competency-based feedback to each student. This project aims to integrate Echo360 video recording in graduate health assessment simulation to enhance the quality of …
