Traumatic brain injuries are a widespread public health issue, with athletes being at an increased risk of traumatic brain injury, especially in contact sports. Dehydration and rehydration prior to use of a weight drop served as a model for conditions experienced by professional boxers in a rodent model of traumatic brain injury. Following dehydration, rehydration, and traumatic brain injury procedures, subjects’ symptoms were assessed using the novel object recognition task, sucrose preference test, open field maze, and elevated zero maze. People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice

Animal-assisted therapy has been gaining increased attention in occupational therapy practice and research. Yet the topic remains missing from university curricula at an international level. The aim of this study was to describe how animal-assisted therapy might be introduced to occupational therapy curricula and explore the experience of students who were able to implement their knowledge within a student-led clinic. Nine occupational therapy students engaged in individual semistructured interviews, allowing them to describe their experience participating in a student-led canine-assisted therapy clinic. Care work is often undervalued, underpaid, and without a fair system of work benefits in place (e.g. contracts, paid leave, workers’ rights) that in many cases falls disproportionately on women and communities of color. Background: Non-alcoholic liver disease (NAFLD) may be associated with cardiovascular diseases; however, only a few studies have analyzed this relationship. We aimed to assess the epidemiologic data and the association between NAFLD and acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in the United States. Methods: The National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database 2016-2019 was queried using ICD10-CM diagnostic codes to identify hospitalizations of AMI + NAFLD. Essential demographic variables were analyzed to determine the disparities in the prevalence of AMI hospitalizations and deaths among NAFLD patients. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression models determined the association between NAFLD and AMI hospitalizations and death. …

Clinical Practice Guidelines For Fall Prevention In The Neurology Unit, Jorge Martin Fernandez

This clinical practice guideline (CPG) initiative addressed the rising patient fall rates at an inpatient general care neurology unit (GCNU) in North Carolina. Falls are a leading cause of preventable injury, yet the facility lacked evidence-based (EB) fall prevention practices. This doctoral project developed a CPG for GCNU fall prevention, which was evaluated by an expert panel using the AGREE II instrument. A literature review identified 20 studies assessed via the Johns Hopkins model, which informed the CPG. Expert review scored the CPG at 100% in all domains, leading to its approval for clinical use. BACKGROUND: With the growing utilization of general endovascular techniques, iatrogenic endovascular foreign bodies have become more prevalent. Contact aspiration has proven to be a valuable technique in treating ischemic strokes by removing the intraluminal thrombus causing cerebral perfusion deficits and neurological symptoms. The authors present a case of the removal of a foreign body from the vasculature via contact aspiration, which had embolized in a delayed fashion after aortic valve replacement. She faces limited access to resources, a sparse support system, and escalating social barriers. Environmental stressors, such as traffic pollution that exacerbates her asthma, and minimal community engagement further impact her mental health. An interprofessional care plan included mental health counseling, community outreach to enhance social support, and medical management to comprehensively address her interconnected health needs.

National policymakers increasingly recognize the care economy as an essential economic driver, contributing $648 billion annually to the U.S. economy and supporting 3.6 million jobs. The care economy is also critical in driving economic development and prosperity in Southern Nevada. Yet, as this Tripp Umbach analysis finds, Southern Nevada’s care economy dramatically underperforms compared to national benchmarks and peer regions. High caregiving costs and limited access to care for children, seniors, and individuals with disabilities in Southern Nevada strain families, businesses, and public resources. AIMS: Alcohol consumption along with negative sequelae from excess alcohol intake increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. We evaluated the association between binge alcohol use and long-term functional outcomes among COVID-19-positive individuals.

METHODS: Using a prospective, longitudinal, multisite cohort study design, we evaluated the association between binge alcohol use and mental and physical functional outcomes using Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS)-29 scores three and six months postinfection. Eligible patients were those who presented with COVID-19-like symptoms, tested positive for COVID-19, and completed a three-month survey. OBJECTIVE: Posterior fossa decompression for Chiari malformation type I (Chiari 1) is effective and associated with a low risk of complication. However, up to 20% of patients may experience continued deficits or recurring symptoms after surgical intervention. For pediatric patients, there are no established tools to predict outcomes, and the risk factors for unfavorable postoperative outcomes are poorly understood. Hence, our aim was to investigate baseline data and early postoperative predictors of poor outcomes as determined by the Chicago Chiari outcome scale (CCOS).

METHODS: All pediatric patients (< 18 years) receiving a posterior fossa decompression for Chiari 1 between the years of 2005 and 2020 at the study center were eligible for inclusion. Patients with congenital anomalies were excluded.

This dissertation project explored the impact of childhood maternal absence on the life history outcomes of adult men. An integrated theoretical model of developmental-evolutionary framework was developed to guide research design and conduct. This model combined sex-differentiated life history framework and fathering resource theory. The study consisted of three components: a scoping review of 29 relevant studies conducted in the United States between 1990-2023, a quantitative analysis of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent and Adult Health (Add Health) waves I and IV (n=6932), and a qualitative analysis of in-depth interviews with a sample of 22 fathers who experienced childhood …

Background: Convergent data suggest that advanced prostate cancer and coronary heart disease (CHD) share biological vulnerabilities that may be linked to adiposity. Here we explore whether leptin, as a marker and mediator of adiposity, could link prostate cancer to CHD.

Methods: Patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) enrolled in a phase II trial (NCT02703623) studying androgen deprivation therapy, abiraterone, prednisone, and apalutamide were eligible if they had plasma and a chest CT scan available. Coronary artery calcium (CAC) scores and adipokine levels were measured upon enrollment.

Triple-negative inflammatory breast cancer (TN-IBC) is the most aggressive type of breast cancer, yet its defining genomic, molecular, and immunological features remain largely unknown. In this study, we performed the largest and most comprehensive genomic and transcriptomic analyses of prospectively collected TN-IBC patient samples from a phase II clinical trial (ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT02876107, registered on August 22, 2016) and compared them to similarly analyzed stage III TN-non-IBC patient samples (ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT02276443, registered on October 21, 2014). BACKGROUND: Dural hemangiomas are a relatively rare form of intracranial mass, as hemangiomas tend to present in bone or as intraparenchymal lesions and only around 5%-13% have been reported to originate from the dura mater. Here, the authors present the case of a 46-year-old female who underwent craniotomy for a suspected convexity meningioma resection, which was unexpectedly found to be a dural capillary hemangioma. Calcium (Ca2+) ions are ubiquitous and indispensable signaling messengers that regulate virtually every cell function. The unique ability of Ca2+ to regulate so many different processes yet cause stimulus specific changes in cell function requires sensing and decoding of Ca2+ signals. Ca2+-sensing proteins, such as calmodulin, decode Ca2+ signals by binding and modifying the function of a diverse range of effector proteins. These effectors include the Ca2+-calmodulin dependent protein kinase kinase-2 (CaMKK2) enzyme, which is the core component of a signaling cascade that plays a key role in important physiological and pathophysiological processes, including brain function and cancer. We developed a Bayesian-based algorithm to infer gene expression states in individual samples and incorporated it into a workflow to identify tumor-associated antigens (TAAs) across 33 cancer types using RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) data from the Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx) and The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). Our analysis identified 212 candidate TAAs, with 78 validated in independent RNA-seq datasets spanning seven cancer types. Eighteen of these TAAs were further corroborated by proteomics data, including 10 linked to liver cancer. We predicted that 38 peptides derived from these 10 TAAs would bind strongly to HLA-A02, the most common HLA allele. Experimental validation confirmed …

BACKGROUND: Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a neurocutaneous disorder characterized by the multisystem development of benign tumors. Patients with TSC are also at an increased risk of developing intracranial aneurysms early in life. While aneurysms have historically been treated with open surgical clipping, endovascular approaches are increasingly being used in both pediatric and adult populations.

OBSERVATIONS: In this case series, the authors report the endovascular treatment of three young patients with TSC and fusiform intracranial aneurysms using the Pipeline embolization device (PED) for flow diversion of the affected artery. Disease-modifying therapies for Alzheimer's disease (AD) are likely to be most beneficial when initiated in the presymptomatic phase. To track the benefit of such interventions, fluid biomarkers are of great importance, with neurofilament light chain protein (NfL) showing promise for monitoring neurodegeneration and predicting cognitive outcomes. Here, we update and complement previous findings from the Dominantly Inherited Alzheimer Network Observational Study by using matched cross-sectional and longitudinal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and plasma samples from 567 individuals, allowing timely comparative analyses of CSF and blood trajectories across the entire disease spectrum. Actin polymerization is often associated with membrane proteins containing capping-protein-interacting (CPI) motifs, such as capping protein, Arp2/3, myosin I linker (CARMIL), CD2AP, and WASHCAP/Fam21. CPI motifs bind directly to actin-capping protein (CP), and this interaction weakens the binding of CP to barbed ends of actin filaments, lessening the ability of CP to functionally cap those ends. The protein V-1/myotrophin binds to the F-actin-binding site on CP and sterically blocks CP from binding barbed ends. CPI-motif proteins also weaken the binding between V-1 and CP, which decreases the inhibitory effects of V-1, thereby freeing CP to cap barbed ends. Here, we …

To identify circRNAs associated with Parkinson's disease (PD) we leveraged two of the largest publicly available studies with longitudinal clinical and blood transcriptomic data. We performed a cross-sectional study utilizing the last visit of each participant (N = 1848), and a longitudinal analysis that included 1166 participants with at least two time points. We identified 192 differentially expressed circRNAs, with effects that were sustained during disease, in mutation carriers, and diverse ancestry. The 192 circRNAs were leveraged to distinguish between PD and healthy participants with a ROC AUC of 0.797. Further, 71 circRNAs were sufficient to distinguish between genetic PD …

INTRODUCTION: Perianal fistulising Crohn's disease (pfCD) is a distinct and debilitating phenotype seen in around one-third of patients with CD. Clinical trials in pfCD are increasingly using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) criteria as a primary endpoint, but there is heterogeneity in the radiological definition of a healed perianal fistula that currently limits our ability to perform meaningful meta-analyses of studies. Our aim is to standardise outcomes through the generation of an international consensus definition of a radiologically healed fistula.
