Inflammatory lesions such as osteomyelitis of the jaw may share some of the radiographic features of malignancy; however, a demonstrable dental cause for it usually exists. In addition, inflammatory lesions generally stimulate a sclerotic bone reaction, which is uncommon in malignancy. The imaging modality of choice for aiding in the differential diagnosis is computed tomography imaging because of its ability to clearly delineate sequestra and periosteal new bone formation.

Utilizing A Stress And Coping Model Into A Preventive Abusive Head Trauma Parent/Caregiver Educational Program, Camile Williams
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Abusive head trauma (AHT) is a serious form of child maltreatment that is the primary cause of fatal head injuries in children younger than 24 months and is the cause for over 50% of severe or fatal traumatic brain injury incidences. These injuries can be caused by impact, shaking, or the combination of shaking and impact. These multi-factorial injuries can cause intracranial and spinal damage, retinal hemorrhages, and fractures of ribs and other bones. The age and severity of injuries will be used to assess the diagnosis of AHT. When AHT occurs, it is often tied to the behavior from …

Reducing Unnecessary Crossmatching For Hip Fracture Patients By Accounting For Preoperative Hemoglobin Concentration, Raj M Amin, Varun Puvanesarajah, Yash P Chaudhry, Matthew J Best, Sandesh S Rao, Steven M Frank, Erik A Hasenboehler
Orthopedic Surgery Resident Research
BACKGROUND: Maximum surgical blood order schedules were designed to eliminate unnecessary preoperative crossmatching prior to surgery in order to conserve blood bank resources. Most protocols recommend type and cross of 2 red blood cell (RBC) units for patients undergoing surgery for treatment of hip fracture. Preoperative hemoglobin has been identified as the strongest predictor of inpatient transfusion, but current maximum surgical blood order schedules do not consider preoperative hemoglobin values to determine the number of RBC units to prepare prior to surgery.
AIM: To determine the preoperative hemoglobin level resulting in the optimal 2:1 crossmatch-to-transfusion (C:T) ratio in hip fracture …

Clinical Pharmacy Services And Medication Utilization In Hospice Care, Aishwarya Kulkarni
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Background: As discussed within the guidelines from the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), pharmacists are an integral part of the hospice multidisciplinary team involved in optimizing the treatments. Methadone, a long-active opioid, is particularly useful in this population but may be clinically underutilized. Additionally, the cost share of medication utilization in hospice and palliative care is shifting towards hospice providers. The assessment of medication utilization and methadone use in this setting can help develop overall cost/clinical optimization strategies. Thus, there is a need to understand the use and expenditure of various medications and pharmacists' role in providing methadone …

Acute respiratory failure (ARF) requiring mechanical ventilation, a complicating factor in sepsis and other disorders, is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Despite its severity and prevalence, treatment options are limited. In light of accumulating evidence that mitochondrial abnormalities are common in ARF, here we applied broad spectrum quantitative and semiquantitative metabolomic analyses of serum from ARF patients to detect bioenergetic dysfunction and determine its association with survival. Plasma samples from surviving and non-surviving patients (N = 15/group) were taken at day 1 and day 3 after admission to the medical intensive care unit and, in survivors, at hospital discharge. …

Making The Case For Psychedelics: Comparing Alternative Treatment Options For Depression, Nicole Amavisca
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Given the number of people who are treated for depression each year and the knowledge that treatments work differently for everyone, there is a pressing need to provide a variety of treatment options. Although psychedelic research had been halted for a few decades due to recreational abuse, there has been revived interest due to its therapeutic potential in the treatment of mood disorders and addiction. As an example, the hallucinogen ketamine has recently been approved as a treatment for depression, which has opened the door for broadening the discussion on psychedelic research. Although the research is limited, psilocybin mimics ketamine …

American beaver (Castor canadensis) have been translocated for population restoration, reduction of human‐wildlife conflict, and enhancement of ecosystem function. Yet few studies have assessed dispersal of beaver, making it difficult to determine at what scale translocations are appropriate. Genetic studies can provide inferences about gene flow, and thus dispersal. We used a landscape genetic approach to evaluate whether landscape features influenced gene flow among beaver in the Coast Range of western Oregon, USA, using samples collected April–September 2014. We collected genetic samples from live‐captured (n=232), road‐killed (n=2) and trapper‐provided (n=58) tissue samples and genotyped them at 10 microsatellite loci. We …

Background NT-proBNP (N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide) is a prognostic biomarker in heart failure (HF) with reduced ejection fraction. However, it is unclear whether there is a sex difference in NT-proBNP response and whether the therapeutic goal of NT-proBNP ≤1000 pg/mL has equivalent prognostic value in men and women with HF with reduced ejection fraction. Methods and Results In a secondary analysis of the GUIDE-IT (Guiding Evidence Based Therapy Using Biomarker Intensified Treatment) trial we analyzed trends in NT-proBNP and goal attainment by sex. Differences in clinical characteristics, HF treatment, and time to all-cause death or HF hospitalization were compared. Landmark …

There is limited and discordant evidence on the role of nicotine in diabetic vascular disease. Exacerbated endothelial cell dysregulation in smokers with diabetes is associated with the disrupted adipose function. Adipokines possess vascular protective, anti-inflammatory, and anti-diabetic properties. However, whether and how nicotine primes and aggravates diabetic vascular disorders remain uncertain. In this study, we evaluated the alteration of adiponectin (APN) level in high-fat diet (HFD) mice with nicotine (NIC) administration. The vascular pathophysiological response was evaluated with vascular ring assay. Confocal and co-immunoprecipitation analysis were applied to identify the signal interaction and transduction. These results indicated that the circulating …

The marine sponge Cacospongia mycofijiensis from the Indo-Pacific has proven to be a source of structurally diverse secondary metabolites that are biologically active against a variety of distinct targets. Current interest in the secondary metabolites of C. mycofijiensis largely stems from a) their potent and preferential cytotoxicity for cancer cell lines versus normal cells, making many of them promising leads as cancer therapeutics and b) the novel mechanisms of action responsible for their impressive cytotoxicity. However, limited compound availability has resulted in a paucity of studies aimed at advancing the preclinical development of these secondary metabolites from C. mycofijiensis for …

Determining The Role Of Methylglyoxal (Mgo) And The Trpa1 Channel In Inducing Astrocyte Senescence And Neurodegeneration, Natalie Hill
Natural Sciences and Mathematics | Biological Sciences Master's Theses
Aging is the largest risk factor for the development of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and related dementias. A recently proposed driver of age-related pathologies is cellular senescence, a phenotype that consists of cell-cycle arrest and an inflammatory response known as the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP). Although there is a link between the accumulation of senescent cells and neurodegeneration, much remains unknown about how senescent cells arise in the brain. Astrocytes are the most abundant cell type in the brain that serve important roles like supporting neurons and proliferating in response to stress. Methylglyoxal (MGO) is a glycolytic byproduct that can react …

Novel Small-Molecule Modifiers Rescue Pathology Associated With Ngly1 Deficiency In A Caenorhabditis Elegans Model, Michael Broussalian
Natural Sciences and Mathematics | Biological Sciences Master's Theses
Functional loss in clearing misfolded proteins is associated with several human diseases. A mutation in one such gene, NGLY1 results in a rare genetic disorder in humans. NGLY1 encodes for Peptide:N-Glycanase (PNGase), which plays a critical role in the Endoplasmic Reticulum Associated Degradation (ERAD) pathway. The clinical pathologies associated with NGLY1 Deficiency in humans include global developmental delay, slowed/restricted movement, hypotonia, and the absence of tears. There is currently no cure or treatment available to delay these pathologies. NGLY1 is an evolutionarily conserved gene with an ortholog in Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) known as png-1. A loss-of-function …

Left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation is an established treatment for patients with end-stage, systolic heart failure as a bridge to heart transplantation or destination therapy. LVAD pump thrombosis is a life-threatening complication than can be triggered by prothrombotic conditions such as infection. Management of pump thrombosis presents as both a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge that is associated with a high morbidity and mortality. We report a case of pump thrombosis in a patient with a HeartMate II (Abbott Laboratories, Chicago, IL) and coronavirus (COVID-19) infection that was treated successfully with an intravenous thrombolytic, tissue plasminogen activator.
