Microaggressions In The Academy: One Black Professor’S Narrative, Kevin L. Jones May 2021

Microaggressions In The Academy: One Black Professor’S Narrative, Kevin L. Jones

Journal of Multicultural Affairs

For many Black men in academia, predominantly White institutions are the epicenter of racism and hindered success. My first year as an instructor at a predominantly White institution proved to be an experience I will never forget. I had some expectations of what I would encounter, but what actually happened far exceeded anything I could have imagined. Through the lens of a racial microaggressions framework, my personal narrative describes my lived experiences as a Black male preparing for the academy at a predominantly White institution in the south. Consequently, these experiences had a long-term emotional, physiological, and psychological impact. These …

Déjà Vu Or The Repetitive Nature Of Microaggressions: An Account Of Two Life Changing Experiences, 10 Years Apart, Nina M. Ellis-Hervey

Journal of Multicultural Affairs

According to American Psychologist Angela Lee Duckworth (2016), grit is often described as passion and perseverance for very long-term goals, while encompassing courage, conscientiousness, perseverance, resilience, and passion. Embodying such characteristics has supported me in thriving in various conditions and situations as an African American girl, then a woman. Grit further assisted in me overcoming many obstacles while remaining resilient, open-minded, and inquisitive. At various points in my education, more specifically my time in undergraduate and graduate schooling, and further in my pursuit of tenure as a young professor, I was met with overt and covert exposures to microaggressions of …

Cognitive and behavioral disabilities in preterm infants, even without obvious brain injury on conventional neuroimaging, underscores a critical need to identify the subtle underlying microstructural and biochemical derangements. The gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and glutamatergic neurotransmitter systems undergo rapid maturation during the crucial late gestation and early postnatal life, and are at-risk of disruption after preterm birth. Animal and human autopsy studies provide the bulk of current understanding since non-invasive specialized proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (

Faculty Research 2021

Non-Ribosomal Peptides (NRPs) represent a biomedically important class of natural products that include a multitude of antibiotics and other clinically used drugs. NRPs are not directly encoded in the genome but are instead produced by metabolic pathways encoded by biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs). Since the existing genome mining tools predict many putative NRPs synthesized by a given BGC, it remains unclear which of these putative NRPs are correct and how to identify post-assembly modifications of amino acids in these NRPs in a blind mode, without knowing which modifications exist in the sample. To address this challenge, here we report NRPminer, …

Does More Testing In Routine Preoperative Evaluation Benefit The Orthopedic Patient? Case Control Study From A Resource-Constrained Setting, Obada Hasan, Shah Fahad, Mohammad Mustafa, Pervaiz Hashmi, Shahryar Noordin

Section of Orthopaedic Surgery

Background: Routine preoperative tests in healthy patients not only cause extra anxiety, but may delay treatment without influencing surgical plan. This has worse impact in resource-constrained settings where fee for service rather than health insurance is the usual norm. Investigators aim to determine if "routine" pre-operative tests are justified in healthy orthopedic patients.
Methods: We conducted a non-commercialized, non-funded matched case control study in tertiary care university hospital and a level-1 trauma centre for healthy patients (ASA-1&2) admitted from January 2014-December 2016 for elective orthopedic intermediate and major procedures. Cases (patient who had a change in his/her surgical plan after …

This study quantifies the transmission potential of SARS-CoV-2 across public health districts in Georgia, USA, and tests if per capita cumulative case count varies across counties. To estimate the time-varying reproduction number, Rt of SARS-CoV-2 in Georgia and its 18 public health districts, we apply the R package ‘EpiEstim’ to the time series of historical daily incidence of confirmed cases, 2 March–15 December 2020. The epidemic curve is shifted backward by nine days to account for the incubation period and delay to testing. Linear regression is performed between log10-transformed per capita cumulative case count and log10-transformed population size. We observe …

Cannabis Use And Car Crashes: A Review., Ulrich W Preuss, Marilyn A. Huestis, Miriam Schneider, Derik Hermann, Beat Lutz, Alkomiet Hasan, Joseph Kambeitz, Jessica W M Wong, Eva Hoch

College of Health Professions Faculty Papers

In this review, state-of-the-art evidence on the relationship between cannabis use, traffic crash risks, and driving safety were analyzed. Systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and other relevant papers published within the last decade were systematically searched and synthesized. Findings show that meta-analyses and culpability studies consistently indicate a slightly but significantly increased risk of crashes after acute cannabis use. These risks vary across included study type, crash severity, and method of substance application and measurement. Some studies show a significant correlation between high THC blood concentrations and car crash risk. Most studies do not support this relationship at lower THC concentrations. However, …

Promoting Antibiotic Stewardship In Primary Care Setting: An Evaluation Process Of Treatment Practices For Uncomplicated Urinary Tract Infections In Premenopausal Non-Pregnant Women, Ira Amayun May 2021

Promoting Antibiotic Stewardship In Primary Care Setting: An Evaluation Process Of Treatment Practices For Uncomplicated Urinary Tract Infections In Premenopausal Non-Pregnant Women, Ira Amayun

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Problem

Inappropriate antibiotic prescribing increases the prevalence of antibiotic resistance. While evidence-based practice guidelines can reduce antibiotic use, inconsistent adherence to these guidelines results in ineffective treatment, increased cost, and increasing antibiotic resistance.

Context

At Athena Med-Monterey, a multi-provider primary care clinic where approximately 90% of the patients are women, written guidelines for uncomplicated urinary tract infections (uUTIs) in premenopausal non-pregnant women (PrMNPW) are lacking. In addition, there are no processes for assessing adherence to clinical guidelines.

Interventions

The advanced practice nurse (APN) led a quality improvement process to assess and promote adherence to practice guidelines using a small test …

Arkansas’S Culture Of Health 2011–2019: A Case Study Narrative Of Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Data Sets, Dylan Travis

Student Theses and Dissertations

Investigating the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) yearly data sets from 2011 to 2019, I illustrate the numerous health decade averages that exist at the county level within the state of Arkansas. These health decade averages are representative of both health factors and health outcomes as measured by the RWJF. The decade averages are compared both nationally and at the county level. I reveal both the positive and negative decade averages that exist within the state, and ideally, to encourage further original study. This is accomplished through a narrative and summative approach of the existing data.
