Extracellular Superoxide Dismutase (Ec-Sod) Regulates Gene Methylation And Cardiac Fibrosis During Chronic Hypoxic Stress., Ayan Rajgarhia, Kameshwar R. Ayasolla, Nahla Zaghloul, Jorge M. Lopez Da Re, Edmund J. Miller, Mohamed Ahmed
Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers
Chronic hypoxic stress induces epigenetic modifications mainly DNA methylation in cardiac fibroblasts, inactivating tumor suppressor genes (RASSF1A) and activating kinases (ERK1/2) leading to fibroblast proliferation and cardiac fibrosis. The Ras/ERK signaling pathway is an intracellular signal transduction critically involved in fibroblast proliferation. RASSF1A functions through its effect on downstream ERK1/2. The antioxidant enzyme, extracellular superoxide dismutase (EC-SOD), decreases oxidative stress from chronic hypoxia, but its effects on these epigenetic changes have not been fully explored. To test our hypothesis, we used an in-vitro model: wild-type C57B6 male mice (WT) and transgenic males with an extra copy of human hEC-SOD (TG). …

Quantitative evaluation of control tools for managing invasive species is necessary to assess overall effectiveness and individual variation in treatment susceptibility. Invasive brown treesnakes (Boiga irregularis) on Guam have caused severe ecological and economic effects, pose a risk of accidental introduction to other islands, and are the greatest impediment to the reestablishment of extirpated native fauna. An aerial delivery system for rodent‐based toxic baits can reduce brown treesnake abundance and heterogeneity among individuals may influence bait attraction or toxicant susceptibility. Previous baiting trials have either been simulated aerial treatments or relied on slightly different bait capsule compositions and the results …

Introduction: A litany of recent evidence supports the morbidity of intra-natal iron-deficiency anemia and its prodrome, iron deficiency. Oral iron administered during second and third trimesters does not get to the developing fetus if the mother is iron deficient. This is especially concerning as the rapidly developing fetal brain is in particular need of iron sufficiency. Intra-natal iron deficiency is associated with autism, schizophrenia and abnormal brain structure. The obstetrical literature reports an unacceptably high incidence of gastrointestinal adverse events with oral iron. The time iron honored standard in the United States for intravenous iron replenishment in gravidas is iron …

BACKGROUND: Advances in HIV-1 therapeutics have led to the development of a range of daily oral treatment regimens, which share similar high efficacy rates. Consequently, more emphasis is being placed upon the individual's experience of treatment and impact on quality of life. The first long-acting injectable antiretroviral therapy for HIV-1 (long-acting cabotegravir + rilpivirine [CAB + RPV LA]) may address challenges associated with oral treatment for HIV-1, such as stigma, pill burden/fatigue, drug-food interactions, and adherence. Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) collected in an HIV-1 clinical trial (ATLAS-2M; NCT03299049) comparing participants' experience with two dosing regimens (every 4 weeks [Q4W] vs. every …

Implementing A Program Of Lifestyle Modification In Pregnancy To Reduce The Risk Of Recurrent Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (Gdm), Connie Van Baah
Doctors of Nursing Practice (DNP) Final Projects, 2020-current
The occurrence of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) has significantly increased globally, as has the threat of GDM recurrence in subsequent pregnancies. GDM recurrence rate can range from 40% to 73% in some populations. GDM is associated with acute maternal health problems and long-term diseases, such as type II diabetes and recurrent GDM. Fetuses and infants of mothers with GDM can experience primary health complications early and late in life. Although lifestyle changes such as healthy eating and physical activity in high-risk patients are effective in reducing diabetes risk factors, limited attention has been paid to the possible benefits of translating …

Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S (1999-2019). However, predicting when someone will attempt suicide has been nearly impossible. In the modern world, many individuals suffering from mental illness seek emotional support and advice on well-known and easily-accessible social media platforms such as Reddit. While prior artificial intelligence research has demonstrated the ability to extract valuable information from social media on suicidal thoughts and behaviors, these efforts have not considered both severity and temporality of risk. The insights made possible by access to such data have enormous clinical potential - most dramatically envisioned as a trigger …

In this paper, one-strain tuberculosis (TB) model with two control mechanisms, education campaigns and chemoprophylaxis of TB-infected patients, was studied to determine their effects on the reduction of latent and active TB cases. In the case of analysis, boundedness and positivity of the model solutions were carried out to determine the biological feasibility of the study. Besides, the calibration of the parameters by utilizing the identifiability technique through the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) was thoroughly analysed. The optimum conditions for controlling TB were derived from the Pontryagin Maximum Principle. The numerical simulations were carried out using the forward-back sweep …

Atypical Structural Neuroconnectivity Associated With Emotional Face Processing And Clinical Affect In Children With Chromosome 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome, David Dodd Stephenson Jr
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Schizophrenia spectrum disorder (SCZ) is a debilitating psychiatric disorder that affects approximately 1% of the general population. The etiopathology of this disorder is not fully understood with genetic and environmental factors underpinning vulnerability and disease progression. Children with chromosome 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) are at ultra-high risk for developing SCZ with 30% developing the disorder in adolescence or young adulthood. To investigate associations with psychosis vulnerability, much work has been performed looking at neurological underpinnings between schizophrenia and 22q11.2DS to assess similarities between both genetic and idiopathic forms of schizophrenia in adults. However, many past studies have assessed this using …

This study examined some factors associated with the utilization of maternal health care servicesby adolescent mothers (15-19 years) in Tanzania in order to provide advice accordingly. The studyused cross-sectional study of adolescent mothers aged 15-19 years using Demographic HealthSurvey and Malaria indicator Survey 2015/16 data. The dependent variables were number ofantenatal care visits, the place where an adolescent mother delivered and post-natal checkup(adolescent mother’s health checking after being discharged or after a home delivery). Theindependent variables were birth order, education level of a mother, marital status of a mother, media exposure, wealth index, distance to health facility. Multiple binary logistic regression …

The retrieval of superior-quality photographs with a minimal exposure is an interesting subject in radiography. Pre-processing is a key phase in signal and image processing such as healthcare, telecommunications, and satellite, and it focuses on reducing or eliminating the extent of noise in the image. Denoising aids in the recovery of finer data and relevant material. Medical images including ECG, Ultrasound, CT-scan, and X-ray provide incredibly fine data that has to be precise and noise-free in order for the knowledge and aspects of interest to be retained during diagnosis. Various noise reduction technologies for medical images, such as wavelet transform, …

Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma (MCS) is a rare high-grade variant of chondrosarcoma. MSC`s represent about 1% to 9% of chondrosarcomas. Less than 500 cases of MCS have been reported in literature, so far. As opposed to other variants, MSC develops outside of the bone in almost third of the cases. Pain and swelling are the most common symptoms at presentation. The overall prognosis of MSC is poor, with frequent distant metastases. Histopathologically, MCS typically exhibits a biphasic pattern consisting of both small cells, and islands of atypical cartilage. The immunohistochemical profile of this lesion overlaps with several other entities. Resection with wide …

Objective: To study the effect of Collagen matrix Mucograft (CM) in enhancing the soft tissue thickness around immediate implants (II) in comparison to palatal connective tissue grafts (SCTG).
Subjects & methods: This randomized, controlled clinical trial included 16 patients, who were randomly divided into test (IIP +CM) and control (IIP+SCTG) groups. Clinical parameters evaluated at baseline, 3-months, and 6-months were papillary bleeding index (PBI), gingival index (GI), facial probing depth (FPD), palatal probing depth (PPD). Direct measurements of gingival thickness were evaluated at baseline and 6-months follow up. Pink esthetic score (PES) and white esthetic score (WES) were evaluated at …

Background: Passage of gingival fibroblasts/gingival mesenchymal stem cells through macro-perforated barrier membranes may allow them to contribute positively in periodontal regeneration. The present study was designed to evaluate the effect of use of Leucocyte Platelet Rich Fibrin (L-PRF) on periosteum-derived stem/ progenitor cells (PDPCs) and gingival mesenchymal stem cells (GMSCs) encouraging their passage through membrane perforations. Methods: twenty patients were randomly allocated into two equal groups; Group I perforated membrane (PM): included intrabony defects treated by perforated membranes. Group II Leucocyte-platelet rich fibrin + perforated membrane (L-PRF + PM): included intrabony defects treated by Leucocyte platelet rich fibrin & perforated …
