Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Cerium oxide nanoparticles, so-called nanoceria, are engineered nanomaterials prepared by many methods that result in products with varying physicochemical properties and applications. Those used industrially are often calcined, an example is NM-212. Other nanoceria have beneficial pharmaceutical properties and are often prepared by solvothermal synthesis. Solvothermally synthesized nanoceria dissolve in acidic environments, accelerated by carboxylic acids. NM-212 dissolution has been reported to be minimal. To gain insight into the role of high-temperature exposure on nanoceria dissolution, product susceptibility to carboxylic acid-accelerated dissolution, and its effect on biological and catalytic properties of nanoceria, the dissolution of NM-212, a solvothermally synthesized nanoceria …

Longitudinal Curricular Assessment Of Knowledge And Awareness Of Intimate Partner Violence Among First-Year Dental Students, Charles Buchanan, Karl Kingsley, Rhonda J. Everett

Dental Medicine Faculty Research

Background: Intimate partner violence (IPV) has previously been recognized as a major public health issue. Oral healthcare providers, such as dentists, are crucial to the screening and identifying of individuals experiencing IPV, since most injuries occur in the head and neck region. A lack of knowledge and awareness regarding teaching and learning about IPV in dental school curricula has been identified. Based upon the overall lack of knowledge, the objective of this study was to conduct a longitudinal assessment of knowledge, awareness, and beliefs regarding IPV among dental students in their first year of education. Methods: All students (n = …

Markedly elevated prevalence of reported adverse mental and behavioral health conditions associated with the COVID-19 pandemic highlight the broad impact of the pandemic and the need to prevent and treat these conditions. This study sought …

Development And Validation Of An Isothermal Amplification Assay For Eastern Equine Encephalitis Virus, Mikayla D. Maddison Jun 2021

Development And Validation Of An Isothermal Amplification Assay For Eastern Equine Encephalitis Virus, Mikayla D. Maddison

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus (EEEV) is a neurotrophic alphavirus for which there is no effective treatment or vaccine for humans. Periodic outbreaks in the Eastern United States represent an ongoing public health problem; Florida serves as the reservoir for EEEV for the rest of the country. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) is the current gold standard for molecular diagnostic testing of the presence of EEEV in vectors. However, RT-PCR is technically complex and can be difficult for mosquito control districts to utilize. In order to provide a simple, cost-effective alternative for mosquito surveillance and control, a novel one step reverse …

Evidence-Based Approach To Early Outpatient Treatment Of Sars-Cov-2 (Covid-19) Infection, J Drew Payne, Kimberly Sims, Cynthia Peacock, Tanis Welch, Ruth E Berggren Jun 2021

Evidence-Based Approach To Early Outpatient Treatment Of Sars-Cov-2 (Covid-19) Infection, J Drew Payne, Kimberly Sims, Cynthia Peacock, Tanis Welch, Ruth E Berggren

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Misinformation and promotion of well-intended but disproved therapies for COVID-19 have plagued evidence-based shared decision-making throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. In times of crisis, clinicians may feel that their strong inclination to prescribe potentially harmful, unproven therapies on behalf of their patients is supported by beneficence. Clinicians should mindfully identify and avoid commission bias during this pandemic, especially as more data have accumulated to assist with clinically sound decision-making. We describe a more evidence-based approach to treatment of early outpatient COVID-19, stressing the availability of Food and Drug Administration emergency use authorization therapies and considering plausibly beneficial, nonprescription supplements that are …

Flecainide-Induced Atrial Flutter With 1:1 Conduction Complicated By Ventricular Fibrillation After Electrical Cardioversion, Timothy Colangelo, Drew Johnson, Reginald Ho Jun 2021

Flecainide-Induced Atrial Flutter With 1:1 Conduction Complicated By Ventricular Fibrillation After Electrical Cardioversion, Timothy Colangelo, Drew Johnson, Reginald Ho

The Texas Heart Institute Journal

Flecainide, a widely prescribed class IC agent used to treat atrial arrhythmias, can in rare cases cause 1:1 atrial flutter with rapid conduction. We describe the case of a 59-year-old man who was on a maintenance regimen of flecainide for refractory atrial fibrillation. When 1:1 atrial flutter with rapid conduction developed, emergency medical technicians attempted synchronized cardioversion, which caused ventricular fibrillation necessitating defibrillation. The patient ultimately underwent radiofrequency ablation and cryoablation to resolve his symptomatic atrial flutter. We discuss the atrial proarrhythmic effects of flecainide and how to mitigate complications in high-risk patients.

Association Between Morning Surge In Systolic Blood Pressure And Syntax Score I In Patients With Stable Coronary Artery Disease, Alaa Quisi, Gokhan Alici, Hazar Harbalioglu, Omer Genc, Ibrahim Halil Kurt, Murat Cayli

The Texas Heart Institute Journal

A high morning surge in systolic blood pressure poses a risk in people who have cardiovascular disease. We investigated the relationship between this phenomenon and the SYNTAX score I in patients who had stable coronary artery disease.

Our single-center study included 125 consecutive patients (109 men and 16 women; mean age, 54.3 ± 9 yr) in whom coronary angiography revealed stable coronary artery disease. We calculated each patient's sleep-trough morning surge in systolic blood pressure, then calculated the SYNTAX score I.

The morning surge was significantly higher in patients whose score was >22 (mean, 22.7 ± 13.2) than in those …

The Etiology Of Mdd In Sexual Minority Youth And Its Implications For Treatment, Keith Burns Jun 2021

The Etiology Of Mdd In Sexual Minority Youth And Its Implications For Treatment, Keith Burns

Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology

Greater tolerance and understanding of homosexuality, transgenderism, and other forms of gender nonconformity have sparked an increased effort to reach out to and help sexual minorities (i.e., groups whose sexual identity, orientation, or practices differ from cisgender heterosexuality), especially those who experience mental health challenges. Despite immense progress in society, deeply rooted social stigma, prejudice, and discrimination have often left sexual minorities feeling bullied, ostracized, and isolated, which tends to reinforce a host of negative mental health outcomes, such as increased risk of major depressive disorder (MDD) and suicidality (Hatchel et al., 2018). While mental health clinicians have become increasingly …

Experiences Of Nonbinary And Gender Nonconforming Individuals Within The Healthcare System, Chloe B. Lacey Jun 2021

Experiences Of Nonbinary And Gender Nonconforming Individuals Within The Healthcare System, Chloe B. Lacey

Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology

Though nonbinary and gender nonconforming people are becoming increasingly recognized in North America, specialized healthcare—specifically gender-affirming procedures—are not becoming available to them. Researchers have examined the subjective experiences of these individuals as they have navigated the healthcare system in order to further understand possible limitations for nonbinary and gender nonconforming populations. Methods include assessing the procedures available to participants and their interpersonal experiences with healthcare professionals and family members. Scientific resources on this topic are limited, and the results are overwhelmingly represented by self-report. Furthermore, the content of the results is majorly negative toward the participants’ experiences. Participants report verbal …

Targeted Treatment Of Head And Neck (Pre)Cancer: Preclinical Target Identification And Development Of Novel Therapeutic Applications, Anne Van Harten, Ruud H. Brakenhoff

Department of Cancer Biology Faculty Papers

Head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC) develop in the mucosal lining ofthe upper-aerodigestive tract. In carcinogen-induced HNSCC, tumors emerge from premalignantmucosal changes characterized by tumor-associated genetic alterations, also coined as ‘fields’ that areoccasionally visible as leukoplakia or erythroplakia lesions but are mostly invisible. Consequently,HNSCC is generally diagnosedde novoat more advanced stages in about 70% of new diagnosis.Despite intense multimodality treatment protocols, the overall 5-years survival rate is 50–60% forpatients with advanced stage of disease and seems to have reached a plateau. Of notable concern isthe lack of further improvement in prognosis despite advances in treatment. This can be attributedto …

Planning Implementation Success Of Syncope Clinical Practice Guidelines In The Emergency Department Using Cfir Framework, Jing Li, Susan S. Smyth, Jessica M. Clouser, Colleen A. Mcmullen, Vedant A. Gupta, Mark V. Williams

Center for Health Services Research Faculty Publications

Background and Objectives: Overuse and inappropriate use of testing and hospital admission are common in syncope evaluation and management. Though guidelines are available to optimize syncope care, research indicates that current clinical guidelines have not significantly impacted resource utilization surrounding emergency department (ED) evaluation of syncope. Matching implementation strategies to barriers and facilitators and tailoring strategies to local context hold significant promise for a successful implementation of clinical practice guidelines (CPG). Our team applied implementation science principles to develop a stakeholder-based implementation strategy. Methods and Materials: We partnered with patients, family caregivers, frontline clinicians and staff, and health system administrators …

Moderating Effects Of Parental Feeding Practices And Emotional Eating On Dietary Intake Among Overweight African American Adolescents, Mary Quattlebaum, Dawn K. Wilson-King, Allison M. Sweeney, Nicole Zarrett

Faculty Publications

This study examined the effects of parental feeding practices and adolescent emotional eating (EE) on dietary outcomes among overweight African American adolescents. Based on Family Systems Theory, it was hypothesized that parental feeding practices, such as parental monitoring and responsibility, would buffer the effects of EE on poor dietary quality, whereas practices such as concern about a child’s weight, restriction, and pressure-to-eat would exacerbate this relationship. Adolescents (N = 127; Mage = 12.83 ± 1.74; MBMI% = 96.61 ± 4.14) provided baseline data from the Families Improving Together (FIT) for Weight Loss trial and an ancillary study. Dietary outcomes (fruit …

Metastasis continues to be the primary cause of all cancer-related deaths despite the recent advancements in cancer treatments. To evaluate the role of mutations in overall survival (OS) and treatment outcomes, we analyzed 957 metastatic patients with seven major cancer types who had available molecular testing results with a FoundationOne CDx® panel. The most prevalent genes with somatic mutations were TP53, KRAS, APC, and LRP1B. In this analysis, these genes had mutation frequencies higher than in publicly available datasets. We identified that the somatic mutations were seven mutually exclusive gene pairs and an additional fifty-two co-occurring gene pairs. Mutations …

Exclusive breastfeeding (EBF)—giving infants only breast-milk for the first 6 months of life—is a component of optimal breastfeeding practices effective in preventing child morbidity and mortality. EBF practices are known to vary by population and comparable subnational estimates of prevalence and progress across low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are required for planning policy and interventions. Here we present a geospatial analysis of EBF prevalence estimates from 2000 to 2018 across 94 LMICs mapped to policy-relevant administrative units (for example, districts), quantify subnational inequalities and their changes over time, and estimate probabilities of meeting the World Health Organization’s Global Nutrition Target …

The Intersection Of Industry, Occupation, And Job Tasks With Hotel Room Cleaner Musculoskeletal Disorder Injuries: A Methods Approach To The Analysis Of California Workers’ Compensation Data, Pamela Vossenas

Dissertations and Theses

Abstract

Background

Hotel room cleaners are a high-risk occupation for musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) injuries among U.S. hotel workers. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) publishes occupational injury rate data for Maids and Housekeeping Cleaners, the Standard Occupation Classification closest to the job of a hotel room cleaner, and for the hotel industry, yet the BLS does not cross reference injury rate data by occupation and industry. This lack of occupational injury surveillance data limits MSD injury prevention and intervention efforts targeting this high-risk occupation in the hotel industry. Workers’ compensation (WC) data is another source of administrative data with potential …
