We performed a detailed analysis of immunophenotypic features of circulating leukocytes and spleen cells from cynomolgus macaques that had been naturally infected with Trypanosoma cruzi, identifying their unique and shared characteristics in relation to cardiac histopathological lesion status. T. cruzi-infected macaques were categorized into three groups: asymptomatic [CCC(-)], with mild chronic chagasic cardiopathy [CCC(+)], or with moderate chronic chagasic cardiopathy [CCC(++)]. Our findings demonstrated significant differences in innate and adaptive immunity cells of the peripheral blood and spleen compartments, by comparison with non-infected controls. CCC(+) and CCC(++) hosts exhibited decreased frequencies of monocytes, NK and NKT-cell subsets in …

Examining Cleaning Detergents Handling By Housewives In Wadi Al-Salqah – Gaza Strip, Nizam El-Ashgar

Journal of the Arab American University مجلة الجامعة العربية الامريكية للبحوث

In light of the deteriorating economic situation in the Gaza Strip, women have decided to shift to cheaper items when they buy household cleaning detergents, without taking much care of the chronic effects of these detergents on both health and skin. More specifically, the daily exposure to the chemical detergents puts women at a high risk, which may be doubled when these chemicals are not labeled properly, especially those bought from peddlers. Therefore, the absence of labels, which provide information about the detergents’ ingredients and how to handle them, makes the housewives unaware of the proper way to handle these …

The coronavirus pandemic has affected more than 150 million people, while over 3.25 million people have died from the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). As there are no established therapies for COVID-19 treatment, drugs that inhibit viral replication are a promising target; specifically, the main protease (Mpro) that process CoV-encoded polyproteins serves as an Achilles heel for assembly of replication-transcription machinery as well as down-stream viral replication. In the search for potential antiviral drugs that target Mpro, a series of cembranoid diterpenes from the biologically active soft-coral genus Sarcophyton have been examined as SARS-CoV-2 Mpro inhibitors. Over 360 metabolites from the …

Cascade Screening And Treatment Initiation In Young Adults With Heterozygous Familial Hypercholesterolemia., Amy L. Peterson, Matthew Bang, Robert C. Block, Nathan D. Wong, Dean G. Karalis

Division of Cardiology Faculty Papers

Heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH) creates elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), causing premature atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Guidelines recommend cascade screening relatives and starting statin therapy at 8-10 years old, but adherence to these recommendations is low. Our purpose was to measure self-reported physician practices for cascade screening and treatment initiation for HeFH using a survey of 500 primary care physicians and 500 cardiologists: 54% "always" cascade screen relatives of an individual with FH, but 68% would screen individuals with "strong family history of high cholesterol or premature ASCVD", and 74% would screen a child of a patient with HeFH. The …

In a digital society, shall we be the authors of our own experience, not only during our lifetime but also after we die? We ask this question because dying and bereavement have become even harder, and much less private, in the digital age. New big data-driven digital industries and technologies are on the rise, with promises of interactive 3D avatars and storage of digital memories of the deceased, so they can continue to exist online as the "living dead"in a digital afterlife. Famous rock and roll icons like Roy Orbison, Frank Zappa, Ronnie James Dio, and Amy Winehouse have famously …

The Kids Cook Monday Program Can Help Reduce Child Obesity, Mary Kate Schutt Jul 2021

The Kids Cook Monday Program Can Help Reduce Child Obesity, Mary Kate Schutt

Population Health Research Brief Series

Childhood obesity is a growing U.S. population health problem. Regularly consuming fast food and other take-out meals is linked to higher rates of childhood obesity. While the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated takeout, rates of takeout and delivery have been increasing since 2012. Engaging children in preparing family meals can protect against childhood obesity and other risky behaviors. The Healthy Monday program, Kids Cook Monday, can support families to regularly cook meals together.

Application Of The Multi-Facet Rasch Model To Evaluate The Chief Resident Selection Survey: A Two-Year Study., Kadriye O. Lewis, Haiqin Chen, Ross Newman

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Introduction The Chief Resident (CR) selection process is described by many residency programs as a collective effort from the residency program leadership, key faculty members, and resident peers. Unfortunately, the literature does not show any established guidelines, methods, or psychometric sound instruments to aid this process. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the properties of the newly developed CRs selection survey across two years using the Multi-Facet Rasch Model (MFRM). Methods This study used the MFRM to analyze two-year data from the newly developed CRs selection survey. After the first implementation of the tool in 2015, this instrument …

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

eIF5-mimic protein (5MP) is a translational regulatory protein that binds the small ribosomal subunit and modulates its activity. 5MP is proposed to reprogram non-AUG translation rates for oncogenes in cancer, but its role in controlling non-AUG initiated synthesis of deleterious repeat-peptide products, such as FMRpolyG observed in fragile-X-associated tremor ataxia syndrome (FXTAS), is unknown. Here, we show that 5MP can suppress both general and repeat-associated non-AUG (RAN) translation by a common mechanism in a manner dependent on its interaction with eIF3. Essentially, 5MP displaces eIF5 through the eIF3c subunit within the preinitiation complex (PIC), thereby increasing the accuracy of initiation. …

Comparative Genomics Methods And Applications, Emily N. Alden Jul 2021

Comparative Genomics Methods And Applications, Emily N. Alden

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Virtually all fields of biology have benefited from the advancements in comparative genomics technologies, specifically in the study of evolution. In this dissertation I develop and use comparative genomic technologies to investigate the novel SARS-CoV-2 virus, assembly the first genome of the black lace domestic angelfish and identify germline genetic variants associated with altered breast cancer-specific survival. Our genome tiling array for the novel coronavirus presents a rapid and cost-effective method to sequence the entire viral genome and can be used to track the rapid evolution of viral variants in the population. The domestic angelfish is a member of the …
