When A Pandemic Disrupts The Export Of People, Yasmin Y. Ortiga, Karen Anne S. Liao Aug 2021

When A Pandemic Disrupts The Export Of People, Yasmin Y. Ortiga, Karen Anne S. Liao

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Yasmin Ortiga and Karen Anne S. Liao conducted research supported by the SSRC on the dramatic disruptions that Filipino labor migrants experienced as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, and the support (or lack thereof) of their plight by the Filipino state. Arguing that labor as well as commodity supply chains have been thrown in upheaval, the authors describe the limits of the Philippines’ labor export strategy. In particular, they focus on two sets of labor migrants—nurses unable to take jobs abroad, and repatriated cruise ship workers—for whom dignified work at home was unavailable. Ortiga and Liao conclude that treating …

Milk Exosomes: Nature's Abundant Nanoplatform For Theranostic Applications, Benilde Adriano, Nycol Cotto, Neeraj Chauhan, Meena Jaggi, Subhash C. Chauhan, Murali M. Yallapu

School of Medicine Publications

Exosomes are a unique subpopulation of naturally occurring extracellular vesicles which are smaller intracellular membrane nanoparticle vesicles. Exosomes have proven to be excellent nanocarriers for carrying lipids, proteins, mRNAs, non-coding RNAs, and DNAs, and disseminating long-distance intercellular communications in various biological processes. Among various cell-line or biological fluid derived exosomes, milk exosomes are abundant in nature and exhibit many nanocarrier characteristics favorable for theranostic applications. To be an effective delivery carrier for their clinical translation, exosomes must inbuilt loading, release, targeting, and imaging/tracking characteristics. Considering the unmet gaps of milk exosomes in theranostic technology it is essential to focus the …

Gender Disparity In Host Responses To Hepatitis B-Related Hepatocellular Carcinoma: A Case Series, Rukaiya Bashir-Hamidu, Divya Chalikonda, Hie-Won Hann Aug 2021

Gender Disparity In Host Responses To Hepatitis B-Related Hepatocellular Carcinoma: A Case Series, Rukaiya Bashir-Hamidu, Divya Chalikonda, Hie-Won Hann

Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Faculty Papers

Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is one of the most common causes of hepato-cellular carcinoma (HCC), a malignant tumor with high mortality worldwide. One remarkable clinical feature of HBV-related HCC is that the risk of development is higher in males and post-menopausal females compared to other females. Increasing evidence also indicates that the prognosis of HBV-associated HCC may involve gender disparity, with females having more favorable out-comes. The proposed mechanism of this gender disparity is thought to be complex and multifactorial. Attributions have been made to gender differences in behavioral risk factors, host stress, immune response, psychology, metabolic risk …

Women's Perceptions On The Effects Of Covid-19 On Access And Use Of Private Sector Family Planning Services In Nigeria: The Integrate Project, The Integrate Project

Reproductive Health

In Nigeria, Community Pharmacists (CPs) and Patent and Proprietary Medicine Vendors (PPMVs) are the first point of care for many common illnesses. Although CPs and PPMVs are not formally recognized as family planning (FP) service providers, 22% of modern contraceptive users report receiving their last method from a PPMV and 12% from a private pharmacy. PPMVs are popular for FP because of their widespread availability, consistent drug stocks, extended hours, personable interactions, and lack of separate fees for consultations. As in many places, the COVID-19 pandemic poses unprecedented challenges to health services in Nigeria. By limiting person-to-person contact, especially during …

The Effects Of Real-Time Computerized Needle Tip Location Feedback On State Anxiety And Immediate Performance Of Simulated Ultrasound-Guided Regional Anesthesia, Joseph Janakes

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Background: Complications of ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia (UGRA) in the clinical setting are severe and frequently related to improper needle tip placement, which is a challenging skill for novice student learners. Accordingly, anesthesia education programs are incorporating simulation-based teaching methods that use expensive procedural task trainers to aid in UGRA training. However, it was unknown if the task trainers with real-time computerized needle tip location feedback affect student anxiety and immediate simulated UGRA performance, leaving educators wondering if the cost was justified.Aims: The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of real-time computerized needle tip location feedback on students’ …

Are Gaming And Gambling Disorders Related? Examining The Roles Of Money, Relative Deprivation, And Upward Mobility, Anthony J. King

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Few studies have examined the financial motives and risks involved in modern video games, as well as the psychosocial factors contributing to this type of gaming involvement. Previous research on gambling has shown financial motives alone to be a major risk factor for the development of gambling disorder, with higher levels of personal relative deprivation (PRD) identified as a main contributor to this relationship. Therefore, the present study investigated whether this association applied to US adult video gamers, and if it would predict their problematic gaming behaviors. We hypothesized PRD and gaming disorder severity would have a positive association, with …

Autophagy Regulation By Lipid Factors With Implications For Parkinson's Disease, Alejandro Soto-Avellaneda Aug 2021

Autophagy Regulation By Lipid Factors With Implications For Parkinson's Disease, Alejandro Soto-Avellaneda

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Parkinson’s disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder. It is characterized by the death of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra and a series of debilitating motor symptoms. Macroautophagy (hereafter referred to as autophagy) is a cellular process by which cells degrade proteins, lipids, organelles or dysfunctional components. Autophagy is thought to play an important role in Parkinson’s disease, because it is the only cellular process known to remove large protein aggregates, such as those seen in Parkinson’s disease pathology. Historically, a large body of work has focused on reporting on protein effectors of autophagy, and regulation of autophagy …

Relationships Between Mindfulness, Nonacademic Factors, Stress, And Test Performance: A Cross-Sectional Study, Rebecca A. Baumeister

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Successful test performance is essential to nursing students. Poor performance comes with consequences such as inability to progress or removal from the program, leading to attrition. The influence of academic factors on test performance have been widely researched and stress is known to hinder it, yet other factors may also impact test performance.

Dispositional mindfulness has the potential to support test performance, but no known studies have focused on these two variables among undergraduate nursing students. A gap also exists in relation to the influence of nonacademic factors on undergraduate nursing students’ test performance. Due to the ongoing nursing shortage, …

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The purpose of this study was to examine job burnout of medical providers in outpatient clinics. Job burnout is a psychological syndrome resulting from job interpersonal stressors; it is measured using three dimensions: (1) emotional exhaustion – feelings of being emotionally overextended and exhausted by one’s work, (2) depersonalization -a unfeeling and impersonal response toward patients, and (3) personal accomplishment – feelings of competence and achievement in one’s work (Maslach & Jackson, 2020). Using a convenience sample, healthcare providers in Southern Nevada were asked to participate. The study was approved by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Internal Review Board …

Turning Up The Sound! Senior-Level Sonographers' Perspectives On The Workforce Readiness/Competency Of Entry-Level Sonographers In The Workplace, Janice L. Glasper

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

There has been a longstanding preoccupation with the workforce readiness and competency of our nation’s graduates since the release of the National Commission on Excellence in Education’s, April 1983 landmark report, A Nation at Risk: “The Imperative for Educational Reform”, which indicated that the educational foundations of our society were being eroded by a rising tide of mediocrity that threatened our very future as a Nation and a people. Now, more than 35 years since the release of A Nation at Risk, it appears that little has changed. Extensive research continues to report that graduates of post-secondary institutions are unprepared …

Effects Of A Discourse Intervention On End-Of-Life Knowledge And Attitudes Of Bsn Nursing Students, Jayme Gullone Haynes Aug 2021

Effects Of A Discourse Intervention On End-Of-Life Knowledge And Attitudes Of Bsn Nursing Students, Jayme Gullone Haynes

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Introduction. A number of challenges exist to providing effective, formalized end of life (EOL) education for undergraduate nursing students. Despite advanced resources provided by the End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC), many nursing program curricula are overloaded with content and have little opportunity to incorporate other content and information.

In addition, the topic of EOL care may elicit significant emotional responses from nursing students with numerous studies indicating nursing students experience fear and anxiety when caring for patients at EOL. Recent research demonstrates the need to approach emotionally laden topics such as EOL care from a pedagogical perspective that acknowledges and …

Investing In Social And Behavior Change Is Cost-Effective For Improving Malaria Behaviors In Côte D’Ivoire, Breakthrough Research

Sexual and Reproductive Health, Rights, and Choices

Social and behavior change (SBC) interventions are considered an essential part of malaria prevention and treatment interventions, yet gaps in information on the cost and impact of SBC mean decisionmakers have underappreciated the value of SBC for contributing to improved health outcomes. To address this issue, Breakthrough RESEARCH has leveraged evidence from 112 studies on the impact of SBC interventions on malaria health behaviors and 70 studies on general SBC intervention costs to model the cost-effectiveness of SBC programming for malaria in the Business Case for Investing in Social and Behavior Change for Malaria.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Mutations in ATPase phospholipid transporting 8B1 (ATP8B1) can lead to familial intrahepatic cholestasis type 1 (FIC1) deficiency, or progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis type 1. The rarity of FIC1 deficiency has largely prevented a detailed analysis of its natural history, effects of predicted protein truncating mutations (PPTMs), and possible associations of serum bile acid (sBA) concentrations and surgical biliary diversion (SBD) with long-term outcome. We aimed to provide insights by using the largest genetically defined cohort of patients with FIC1 deficiency to date.

APPROACH AND RESULTS: This multicenter, combined retrospective and prospective study included 130 patients with compound …
