A Quantitative Investigation Of The Impact Roll Has On The Percent Change In Position Of Breast Phantoms Of Various Volumes, Clayton N. Young
A Quantitative Investigation Of The Impact Roll Has On The Percent Change In Position Of Breast Phantoms Of Various Volumes, Clayton N. Young
Masters Projects
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of phantom size and level of roll on the percent change in position and percent of planned treatment volume (PTV) receiving prescription dose of breast phantoms. Due to their non-rigid physical properties, breasts being treated for radiation therapy are vulnerable to positional variability following a roll adjustment. Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) scans are commonly used to verify anatomical breast position, but they are not always reacquired after a roll correction is made. Treating a volume at a different position has the potential to compromise the intended dose distribution. Factors …

Responding To Parents' Questions Regarding Polysorbate 80, Aluminum, And Thimerosal In Vaccines, Elli Hugh, Beth Luthy
Student Works
Vaccines save millions of lives worldwide every year. Nevertheless, misinformation regarding vaccine ingredients circulates on various media platforms and may negatively influence parental decisions regarding childhood vaccinations. Three vaccine ingredients commonly associated with parental vaccine concerns include polysorbate 80, aluminum, and thimerosal. Common misconceptions about polysorbate 80 and neurological sequela exist within the vaccine hesitant community. Additionally, aluminum has been incorrectly connected to chronic disease in children. Though proven that thimerosal does not cause autism, vaccine critics have now inaccurately reformed the argument claiming that it is the combination of thimerosal and aluminum that causes autism. The purpose of this …

Reliable access to safe and acceptable water in sufficient quantities (i.e., water security) is important for medication adherence and limiting pathogen exposure, yet prior studies have only considered the role of food security as a social determinant of HIV-related health. Therefore, the objective of this analysis was to assess the relationships between household water insecurity and HIV-related outcomes among adults living with HIV in western Kenya (N = 716). We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of baseline data from Shamba Maisha (NCT02815579), a cluster randomized controlled trial of a multisectoral agricultural and asset loan intervention. Baseline data were collected from June …

Diabetes is becoming a common disease among indigenous populations in Guatemala. They perceive diabetes not only as a medical disease, but also a condition linked to emotions. They say they have total confidence in the official health system, but in practice they rely on the ancestral Mayan knowledge of the healers and spiritual guides to complement biomedical treatments.
Roles Of A Bradykinin Storm And A Cytokine Storm In Covid-19 Cases, Nouha H. Odeh
Roles Of A Bradykinin Storm And A Cytokine Storm In Covid-19 Cases, Nouha H. Odeh
Honors College Theses
In the light of recent events, it is imperative to understand the key inflammatory response elements that appear to be the source of more severe ailments resulting from a SARS-CoV-2 viral infection known as Covid-19 The more severe cases of Covid-19 are characterized by a severe inflammatory response resulting in tissue damage. My research proposal aims to investigate the two possible culprits of this response: a bradykinin (BK) storm and an interleukin-6 (IL-6) mediated cytokine storm. In both systems respectively, the excess release of these signals subsequently signals the production of even more of the same response element, resulting in …
The Exploration Of Novel Synthetic Methods Of Biologically Relevant Nitrogen And Halogen Containing Molecules, Rebekah Erin Strong
The Exploration Of Novel Synthetic Methods Of Biologically Relevant Nitrogen And Halogen Containing Molecules, Rebekah Erin Strong
Theses and Dissertations
Visible light has become a highly useful, and regarded, tool to the organic chemist. The additions and transformations of an abundance of molecules can be achieved with the use of visible light and photocatalysts, when appropriate. More specifically compounds that contain nitrogen, halogens, or both are highly useful structures in nearly every chemical industry. They are elements found in naturally occurring molecules and have the capacity to mimic biologically active and relevant structures. This makes them useful targets for pharmaceutical compounds. Bromine and chlorine can act as leaving groups; this property makes molecules with these elements reactive and thus able …

Simple Energy Balance Or Microbiome For Childhood Obesity Prevention?, Tom Baranowski, Kathleen J Motil
Children’s Nutrition Research Center Staff Publications
Obesity prevention interventions generally have either not worked or had effects inadequate to mitigate the problem. They have been predicated on the simple energy balance model, which has been severely questioned by biological scientists. Numerous other etiological mechanisms have been proposed, including the intestinal microbiome, which has been related to childhood obesity in numerous ways. Public health research is needed in regard to diet and the microbiome, which hopefully will lead to effective child obesity prevention.

Introduction: Postoperative ileus (poi) is defined as a temporary cessation of bowel movement after a surgical procedure. Cessation of bowel movement not only leads to disturbing constipation but also may lead to nausea, loss of appetite, and food intolerance. Literature reports "sham feeding" (gum-chewing) effect as an increase in chewing and saliva which enhances the gastric emptying and overall motility of gut as a cephalic phase of digestion. Therefore, we aim to assess the effect of adding gum-chewing to the conventional postoperative feeding regimen on restoring postoperative bowel function and length of stay in hospital of patients undergoing elective hip …

Aboriginal Health Consumers Experiences Of An Aboriginal Health Curriculum Framework, Petah Atkinson, Marilyn Baird, Karen Adams
Australian Indigenous HealthBulletin
Introduction
In settler colonised countries medical education is situated in colonist informed health systems. This form of colonisation is characterised by overt racism and contributes to the significant health inequities experienced by Indigenous peoples. Not surprisingly, medical accreditation bodies in these countries have mandated the curriculum include content relating to Indigenous peoples. However, what is absent is the Indigenous health consumer worldview of health care and their nuanced lived experience of the delivery of medical care.
Methods
Yarning methods, integral to Aboriginal peoples’ ways of understanding and learning, were utilised. A Yarning guide was constructed with Social Yarn and Research …
