Pain Reduction In Chronic Lumbar Patients Using Spinal Cord Stimulation, David Botros
Pain Reduction In Chronic Lumbar Patients Using Spinal Cord Stimulation, David Botros
Theses and Graduate Projects
Background: Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is commonly used to treat chronic neuropathic pain. A common indication for the SCS is failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS). There are many interventional approaches to treating lumbar pain; however, the SCS may provide the greatest benefit in terms of health care utilization and overall pain relief to the patient.
Objective: The goal of this paper is to assess the effectiveness of SCS compared to conventional therapies such as physical therapy, oral medications, radiofrequency ablations (RFA), epidural steroid injections (ESI), and intrathecal pain pumps (IT pain pump) in patients with chronic lumbar pain due to …

Faculty Research 2021
Actinins are strain-sensing actin cross-linkers that are ubiquitously expressed and harbor mutations in human diseases. We utilize CRISPR, pluripotent stem cells, and BioID to study actinin interactomes in human cardiomyocytes. We identify 324 actinin proximity partners, including those that are dependent on sarcomere assembly. We confirm 19 known interactors and identify a network of RNA-binding proteins, including those with RNA localization functions. In vivo and biochemical interaction studies support that IGF2BP2 localizes electron transport chain transcripts to actinin neighborhoods through interactions between its K homology (KH) domain and actinin's rod domain. We combine alanine scanning mutagenesis and metabolic assays to …

Plasma hyaluronan (HA) increases systemically in type 2 diabetes (T2D) and the HA synthesis inhibitor, 4-Methylumbelliferone, has been proposed to treat the disease. However, HA is also implicated in normal physiology. Therefore, we generated a Hyaluronan Synthase 2 transgenic mouse line, driven by a tet-response element promoter to understand the role of HA in systemic metabolism. To our surprise, adipocyte-specific overproduction of HA leads to smaller adipocytes and protects mice from high-fat-high-sucrose-diet-induced obesity and glucose intolerance. Adipocytes also have more free glycerol that can be released upon beta3 adrenergic stimulation. Improvements in glucose tolerance were not linked to increased plasma …

Background: Neonatal mortality due to preterm birth and low birthweight remains a significant challenge in Pakistan. Kangaroo mother care (KMC) is a unique, low-cost intervention proven to reduce neonatal mortality and morbidity and increase exclusive breastfeeding rates. However, KMC has not been attempted in community settings in Pakistan. We aim to implement and evaluate the effectiveness of a community-based KMC package to reduce neonatal morbidity and mortality among preterm and low birthweight (LBW) infants, which will provide evidence for policy development and the large-scale implementation of KMC across the country.
Objective: The primary objective of this trial is to reduce …

lncRNA taurine-upregulated gene 1 (Tug1) is a promising therapeutic target in the progression of diabetic nephropathy (DN), but the molecular basis of its protection remains poorly understood. Here, we generate a triple-mutant diabetic mouse model coupled with metabolomic profiling data to interrogate whether Tug1 interaction with peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator 1α (PGC1α) is required for mitochondrial remodeling and progression of DN in vivo. We find that, compared with diabetic conditional deletion of Pgc1α in podocytes alone (db/db; Pgc1αPod-f/f), diabetic Pgc1α knockout combined with podocyte-specific Tug1 overexpression (db/db; TugPodTg; Pgc1αPod-f/f) reverses the protective phenotype of …

Distress Evaluation During Chemotherapy: The Real-Time Assessment Strategies For Oncology Nurses Among Asian Population In Outpatient Clinics, Ying Huang
DNP Qualifying Manuscripts
Background: Routine oncology visits failed to identify 50-94% of patient’s distress, which creates a considerable burden, impairs emotional well-being and reduces patients’ quality of life. Limited in-person visits during the COVID-19 pandemic have reduced access to care for many patients, further adding to their emotional distress. Untreated distress also leads to elevated stress levels, systemic inflammation, non-compliance with treatment, and higher mortality rates. Early distress screening and multidisciplinary care are recommended to reduce the impacts of distress.
Objectives: To identify the best outpatient practices to address newly diagnosed cancer patients’ unique needs due to distress.

Ischemic Stroke, Brett Winner
Ischemic Stroke, Brett Winner
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
Cerebrovascular accident, or stroke, as it is referred to is a serious neurological event that affects almost 800,000 people in the United States annually, of which approximately 87% is ischemic in nature. Ischemic stroke is mostly caused by atherosclerotic plaques that develop due to endothelial injury in vessels that supply blood flow to the brain. An ischemic stroke can be the result of thrombi breaking off from vessels in the brain, emboli from outside the brain, or small vessel stenosis, all of which occlude a vessel within brain and cause tissue ischemia. When perfusion to portions of the brain is …

This poster describes the pathophysiology, symptoms, implications for care, and treatment of osteoporosis for advanced practice RNs. The research was conducted within health-related databases. The literature review narrowed the search to only include the pathophysiology, interventions, and care for osteoporosis. Literature was restricted to within the past five years. The research showed that osteoporosis reduces mineral density in bones and can be adequately treated within a short amount of time. It is important for nurses and advanced practice providers to be aware of current guidelines, screenings, and treatments for osteoporosis.

Considering this limitation, research was carried out to evaluate the dosimetric differences between a split-field fixed-jaw volumetric arc radiotherapy (SF-FJ VMAT) technique and a jaw tracking VMAT (JT VMAT) technique for the treatment of prostate cancer with involved lymph nodes.
Methods
Plans for 16 patients treated with the same dose regimen were created using both techniques. Initial JT-VMAT plans were planned with two arcs to encompass the entire tumor volume without jaw restrictions and jaw tracking …
