Introduction: This retrospective study analyses the demographics, clinical features, and comorbidities of patients admitted with COVID-19. The study also evaluates the association of two biomarkers namely D-dimer and CRP (C-reactive protein) with the severity of the infection. Methods: Data of COVID-19 patients admitted from 1 June 2020 to 31 August 2020 was collected based on age, sex, date of admission and discharge, the severity of infection, final disposition, treatment, biomarkers (C-reactive protein and D-dimer), other associated presentations, and comorbidities through a chart review. Malabar Pit Viper Envenomation Presenting With Symptomatic Hyperkalaemia In A Tertiary Care Centre In South Karnataka, Vrinda Lath

A 25-year-old male was bitten by a pit viper over the foot and presented with a tender and oedematous bitten limb a day after the bite. He had received anti-snake venom (ASV) at a local centre and developed anaphylaxis. He was admitted for observation and developed sudden onset hyperkalaemia and hemodynamic instability which responded to anti-hyperkalemic measures. We highlight envenomation by a species not known to cause any life-threatening complications, and emphasize the need for intensive monitoring and discuss the importance of species identification, knowledge of regional herpetofauna and treatment modalities including the need for a species-specific antivenin.

A Rare Case Of Chorioretinitis Sclopetaria- A Pellet In A Haystack, Yogish Kamath

Chorioretinitis sclopetaria is a rare event with a poor visual prognosis, with less than a hundred cases reported worldwide. We report a case of an 8-year-old boy who presented with swelling and decreased vision in the left eye after an alleged fall. On examination, the affected eye showed periorbital ecchymosis, ptosis, subconjunctival haemorrhage, hyphema, and an afferent pupillary defect. A CT scan showed a foreign object lodged in the left orbit which was removed surgically. Studies by several investigators have indicated a causal role for SAA in the development of atherosclerosis in animal models. Post-coarctectomy syndrome is a complication of aortic arch repair that occurs due to a sudden increase in reperfusion of the body’s vasculature following surgery. One complication related to postcoarctectomy syndrome is ileus which can prolong a patient’s ICU stay and delay discharge home. While traditionally supportive care has been used to resolve this condition, this case highlights the use of gabapentin as a relatively novel treatment for post-coarctectomy syndrome gastrointestinal ileus.

Guillain Barre syndrome presents as acute onset of gradually progressive ascending flaccid paralysis with hyporeflexia or areflexia. The variants are acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, acute motor axonal neuropathy, acute motor sensory axonal neuropathy, and Miller Fisher syndrome. Miller Fisher syndrome includes symptoms that form a classical triad of ophthalmoplegia, ataxia, and hyporeflexia or areflexia. This case presents a case of Miller Fisher syndrome with atypical features wherein the patient had normal reflexes and his reflexes remained normal in follow-up.

Hip Hop is recognized as an agent for youth development in both educational and well-being spaces, yet literature exploring the intersection of the two areas is comparatively underdeveloped. This article presents a critical interpretive synthesis of twenty-two articles investigating school-based well-being interventions which used Hip Hop. The critical stance taken aimed to identify or expose assumptions underpinning this area of scholarship and practice. Preservation of motor capabilities is vital to maintaining independent daily living throughout a person's lifespan and may mitigate aging-related parkinsonism, a progressive and prevalent motor impairment. Physically active lifestyles can mitigate aging-related motor impairment. However, the metrics of physical activity necessary for mitigating parkinsonian signs are not established. Consistent moderate intensity (~10 m/min) treadmill exercise can reverse aging-related parkinsonian signs by 20 weeks in a 2-week on, 2-week off, regimen in previously sedentary advanced middle-aged rats. Postpartum depression is the most common postpartum mood disorder, with 13% of new mothers reporting symptoms within the first year. Adverse birth outcomes, such as low birth weight and preterm birth co-index with the development of postpartum depression. This correlation is particularly alarming considering that Black women have about a 60% higher rate of preterm birth and an 88% higher rate of low birth weight infants than Caucasian women. Dysregulation in adipokine biosynthesis and function contributes to obesity-induced metabolic diseases. However, the identities and functions of many of the obesity-induced secretory molecules remain unknown. Here, we report the identification of leucine-rich alpha-2-glycoprotein 1 (LRG1) as an obesity-associated adipokine that exacerbates high fat diet–induced hepatosteatosis and insulin resistance. Serum levels of LRG1 were markedly elevated in obese humans and mice compared with their respective controls. LRG1 deficiency in mice greatly alleviated diet-induced hepatosteatosis, obesity, and insulin resistance. Mechanistically, LRG1 bound with high selectivity to the liver and promoted hepatosteatosis by increasing de novo lipogenesis and suppressing fatty acid β-oxidation. LRG1 …

BACKGROUND: Intestinal disorders such as environmental enteric dysfunction (EED) are prevalent in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and important contributors to childhood undernutrition and mortality. Autopsies are rarely performed in LMICs but minimally invasive tissue sampling is increasingly deployed as a more feasible and acceptable procedure, although protocols have been devoid of intestinal sampling to date. We sought to determine (1) the feasibility of postmortem intestinal sampling, (2) whether autolysis precludes enteric biopsies' utility, and (3) histopathologic features among children who died during hospitalization with acute illness or undernutrition.

In the present study, the impact of STAT3 inhibition on cognition, cerebrovascular function, amyloid pathology, oxidative stress, and neuroinflammation was studied using in vitro and in vivo models of Alzheimer's disease (AD)-related pathology. On May 22, 2011, an EF-5 tornado struck Joplin, Missouri, leaving behind 161 fatalities and $2.8 billion in economic impacts. This case study research design used in-depth semi-structured, one-on-one interviews and a qualitative design and analysis to examine the economic recovery following the disaster. It also formed the foundation for future research on the impact of interdisciplinary teams, specifically disaster emergency management and social work in disaster recovery.

This paper analyzes the gradual transition of British Petroleum (BP), one of the world's largest oil and gas companies, into a renewable energy company focused on sustainability and the reduction of carbon emissions. BP's leadership and ethical practices are compared before and after the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster. The purpose of the comparison and the broader analysis of the transition is to identify how effective leadership can be used to transform a company with a suspect social responsibility record into a leader among its peers.
