Background
Hypertriglyceridemia has emerged as a critical coronary artery disease (CAD) risk factor. Rare loss-of-function (LoF) variants in apolipoprotein C-III have been reported to reduce triglycerides (TG) and are cardioprotective in American Indians and Europeans. However, there is a lack of data in other Europeans and non-Europeans. Also, whether genetically increased plasma TG due to ApoC-III is causally associated with increased CAD risk is still unclear and inconsistent. The objectives of this study were to verify the cardioprotective role of earlier reported six LoF variants of APOC3 in South Asians and other multi-ethnic cohorts and to evaluate the causal association …

People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice
Background: Health care providers must understand factors that may guide the decision-making process for determining whether a veteran with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is appropriate for a service dog (SD) versus an emotional support animal (ESA), and assist SD training organizations in determining trained tasks that are suitable for the veteran’s needs.
Purpose: This study explored the perspectives of SD training organizations and factors for human health care providers to consider before recommending a veteran with PTSD for a SD versus an ESA. The researchers identified information that providers should give organizations to guide the SD training and placement process. …
A Literature Review On The Development Of Upper Limbs In Humans, Anh T. Phan
A Literature Review On The Development Of Upper Limbs In Humans, Anh T. Phan
The Cardinal Edge
The development of tetrapod upper limbs shares an evolutionary origin and has been adapted and specialized for different functions for different species, such as flight in birds, swimming and balance in sea mammals, and coordination and grabbing objects in humans. The basis of tetrapod limb development has common developmental patterns, starting with the formation of the limb bud via Sonic hedgehog (Shh) signaling, where later developmental steps are modified for specialized functions. This review covers the basic developmental patterns of mammalian tetrapod development seen in humans, beginning with the formation of the limb bud, to the axis development of the …
Angiogenesis' Effect Overall On Health And Disease, Wendy Tang
Angiogenesis' Effect Overall On Health And Disease, Wendy Tang
The Cardinal Edge
Angiogenesis plays a major role in the development of diseases and cancer. The development of illnesses like metastatic breast cancer, cell carcinomas, tumors and various other illnesses, originate from the activation of endothelial cells. When the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is released from hypoxic tissues, they bind to vascular endothelial growth factor receptors (VEGFR). The binding of VEGF and VEGFR allows for cellular proliferation, increased migration of lattice networks, and the invasion of endothelial cells, which stimulate the formation of new blood vessels from pre-existing ones. As a result, it can be concluded that the inhibition of VEGFs would …

Sexual Health Misinformation And Potential Interventions Among Youth On Social Media, Jahnavi Sunkara
The Cardinal Edge
With the rise of the internet and social media, many adolescents and young adults have turned to the internet and social media for sexual health information. However, this can be problematic because sexual health misinformation on social media utilizes a variety of techniques to quickly disseminate and retain that misinformation in users. Historically, the spread of sexual health misinformation has specifically negatively impacted adolescents and young adults regarding two sexual health topics: contraceptives and HPV vaccination. Current evidence demonstrates that a combination of corrections and inoculation would be effective against general health misinformation. However, there is a lack of research …

Comparing Medical Student Nonverbal Behavior With Cisgender And Transgender Standardized Patients, Meghan M. Schneider, Emily J. Noonan, Laura Weingartner
The Cardinal Edge
It is essential for medical students to effectively communicate with patients of all gender identities. Evaluating nonverbal behavior is one way to assess the quality of patient care – examining providers’ behaviors while working with cisgender and transgender patients can identify potential biases linked to patient identity. To evaluate nonverbal behavior, the authors analyzed video-recorded training sessions with medical students interviewing standardized patients who identified as cisgender or transgender women. All students identified as cisgender men or cisgender women. The authors rated ten nonverbal behaviors from 1-7 and noted whether these behaviors were perceived to detract from the encounter. Average …

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) occurs as an increased collapsibility of the upper airway during sleep, which threatens health and quality of life. Asian men with greater severity of OSA presents less obese and are connected with craniofacial abnormalities. Although the traditional maxillomandibular advancement (MMA) had the comparable effectiveness to the continuous positive airway pressure therapy, the midfacial esthetics might be compromised in Asian individuals. The modified MMA procedure was proposed to balance the esthetic demands and improvement of OSA symptoms. The case report showed a 25-year-old man presented with a diagnosis of severe OSA. The pretreatment Apnea Hypopnea Index (AHI) …

Protraction Of Maxillary Single Side Teeth For Substitution Of Missing Canine And 1st Molar, Wan-Jung Tsai, Szu-Ching Lee, Tzu-Ying Wu
Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics
This case report presents a 24-year-old female with Class III skeletal pattern, anterior cross-bite, retroclined upper incisors with missing teeth (23, 26, 46). Upper dental midline was shifted to left for 3.5 mm due to early missing of tooth 23. Maxillary sinus pneumatization was noted at both sides.
Our treatment goal was to correct upper dental midline and anterior crossbite. On the other hand, the patient requested to close all of the extraction space and solve the problem of poor prognostic tooth 36. Therefore, we extracted tooth 14 for crowding relief and midline correction. Interdental screw was used to protract …

Surgical Alteration Of Occlusal Plane Angulation Followed By Orthodontic Application Of Tads And Yin-Yang Arch Wire In Hypodivergent Prognathic Malocclusion, Chih-Hsun Hou, Yi-Min Liu, Chia-Yi Pan, Huei-Mei Tsai
Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics
Surgical clockwise pitch rotation of the maxillo-mandibular complex could change the occlusal plane angulation and thereby open the bite. This procedure also increases the mandibular plane angle by forcing the lower face to turn backward and downward; it is the key to correct both skeletal and dental Class III malocclusions.
This case report presents a skeletal deformaty which primarily resulted from excessive transverse growth and reduced vertical growth in the midface and upper dentition. The counterclockwise growth rotation and excessive forward growth mandible aggravated the sagittal jaw bone discrepancy. The dental effect included canted maxillary occlusal plane and severe attrition …

Indication And Timing Of Mucogingival Soft Tissue Augmentation Associated With Orthodontic Treatment, Shun-Jen Yu, Yi-Hao Lee, Aaron Yu-Jen Wu
Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics
Gingiva recession is defined as an apical shift of the gingival margin caused by different conditions/pathologies. It is associated with clinical attachment loss. Several studies showed prevalence of gingiva recession in orthodontic patients. Some predisposing factors should be taken carefully considering the effect of the treatment modality. No consensus agreement was identified about the timing of the soft tissue augmentation intervention for orthodontic patients with the risk of gingival recession. However, several critical factors can guide the decision making to obtain the most preferred treatment option.
This article reviews the factors regarding the correlation of gingival margin alteration and orthodontic …

The most clinically significant complication associated with stereotactic core needle biopsy of the breast is hematoma formation, which only occurs in less than 1% of biopsies and may require treatment. Cases of uncontrollable bleeding, refractory to repeated compression, resulting from biopsy are exceedingly rare. We present a case of catastrophic, uncontrollable bleeding and large hematoma formation resulting from stereotactic vacuum-assisted breast biopsy of a breast mass identified in screening mammography. Percutaneous embolization was planned and guided using 3D reconstructions from computed tomographic angiography, and bleeding was successfully controlled with micro-coil embolization.

Background
The identification of endogenous signals that lead to microglial activation is a key step in understanding neuroinflammatory cascades. As ATP release accompanies mechanical strain to neural tissue, and as the P2X7 receptor for ATP is expressed on microglial cells, we examined the morphological and molecular consequences of P2X7 receptor stimulation in vivo and in vitro and investigated the contribution of the P2X7 receptor in a model of increased intraocular pressure (IOP).
Methods
In vivo experiments involved intravitreal injections and both transient and sustained elevation of IOP. In vitro experiments were performed on isolated mouse retinal and brain microglial cells. …

Fabrication And Comparative Study Of Horizontal And Vertical Electrospun Protein-Polysaccharide Nanofiber Biomaterials, Ashley Rivera-Galleti
Theses and Dissertations
The use of biocompatible and biodegradable composite materials for biomedical applications has attracted the attention of many researchers in the past few years. In this study, we fabricated nanofibers of silk fibroin and cellulose and its derivatives to amalgamate their unique properties into a single material. The production of these nanofibers via electrospinning is of particular interest, and whereas several studies have been done on normal nanofibers, the formation of branched nanofibers is an exciting area not currently explored. Blend solutions are formed by dissolving silk and cellulose/cellulose acetate in formic acid separately and mixing to achieve the desired ratios. …

Structural Variants Are A Major Source Of Gene Expression Differences In Humans And Often Affect Multiple Nearby Genes, Alexandra J Scott, Colby Chiang, Ira M Hall
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Structural variants (SVs) are an important source of human genome diversity, but their functional effects are poorly understood. We mapped 61,668 SVs in 613 individuals from the GTEx project and measured their effects on gene expression. We estimate that common SVs are causal at 2.66% of eQTLs, a 10.5-fold enrichment relative to their abundance in the genome. Duplications and deletions were the most impactful variant types, whereas the contribution of mobile element insertions was small (0.12% of eQTLs, 1.9-fold enriched). Multitissue analysis of eQTLs revealed that gene-altering SVs show more constitutive effects than other variant types, with 62.09% of coding …
