A persistent left superior vena cava (LSCV) is a form of anomalous venous drainage of the superior vena cava into the left atrium. We present a case of LSCV and partial anomalous pulmonary venous return (PAPVR) in a patient with progressively worsening dyspnea on exertion. A 57-year-old female with a history of aortic valve stenosis, and tobacco abuse presented with dyspnea on exertion for 4 days. On presentations her vitals were unremarkable except elevated blood pressure and oxygen saturation of 94% on 5L oxygen. Gingival overgrowth, or gingival hyperplasia is the hypertrophy of periodontium caused by local systemic diseases or medications. These medications can be broadly categorized into three main groups including immunosuppressants, anticonvulsants, and calcium channel blockers (CCBs). Amlodipine-induced gingival overgrowth (AIGO) is a less documented phenomenon. This is a unique case of 68-year-old African American woman who developed severe AIGH after taking amlodipine for three years for essential hypertension. Although rare, patients with variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (vCJD) in their differential diagnosis of progressive dementia and movement disorder could continue to present to hospitals for care. However, U.S.-based infection control guidelines do not fully address the possibility of vCJD. After near-misses involving increasing numbers of patients with clinical findings and epidemiologic risks compatible with vCJD, or exposures to chronic wasting disease, we sought to improve recognition and prevention of iatrogenic spread of these prion-related diseases.

Dermatology education has been shown to be lacking in many primary care residency programs. We identified the lack of dermatology education as a gap in our internal medicine residency program in the annual program evaluation in 2017. A Needs Assessment identified the lack of a clinical experience in evaluating and treating skin disorders as our largest deficit. A team of associate program directors, faculty, and residents identified three objectives for the implementation of a dermatology curriculum for our program. We present new constraints on dark matter interactions using 1.7 years of COSINE-100 data. The COSINE-100 experiment, consisting of 106 kg of tallium-doped sodium iodide [NaI(Tl)] target material, is aimed to test DAMA’s claim of dark matter observation using the same NaI(Tl) detectors. Improved event selection requirements, a more precise understanding of the detector background, and the use of a larger dataset considerably enhance the COSINE-100 sensitivity for dark matter detection. No signal consistent with the dark matter interaction is identified and rules out model-dependent dark matter interpretations of the DAMA signals in the specific context of standard halo model …

Efforts to control SARS-CoV-2 have been challenged by the emergence of variant strains that have important implications for clinical and epidemiological decision making. Four variants of concern (VOCs) have been designated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), namely, B.1.617.2 (delta), B.1.1.7 (alpha), B.1.351 (beta), and P.1 (gamma), although the last three have been downgraded to variants being monitored (VBMs). VOCs and VBMs have shown increased transmissibility and/or disease severity, resistance to convalescent SARS-CoV-2 immunity and antibody therapeutics, and the potential to evade diagnostic detection. Machine-assisted treatment selection commonly follows one of two paradigms: a fully personalized paradigm which ignores any possible clustering of patients; or a sub-grouping paradigm which ignores personal differences within the identified groups. While both paradigms have shown promising results, each of them suffers from important limitations. In this article, we propose a novel deep learning-based treatment selection approach that is shown to strike a balance between the two paradigms using latent-space prototyping. Background. Extensive research has evaluated the involvement of the neuropeptide oxytocin (OT) in human social behaviors, including parent-infant relationships. Studies have investigated OT’s connection to human attachment to nonhuman animals, with the majority of the literature focusing on domestic dogs (Canis lupis familiaris). Utilizing what is known about OT and its role in maternal-infant and human-dog bonding, we apply these frameworks to the study of human-domestic cat (Felis catus) interactions. Methods. Objective The purpose of this study was to determine whether gender influences the likelihood of receiving a lowerthird global assessment (GA) on the standardized letter of evaluation (SLOE) submitted as part of the emergency medicine (EM) application process as well as the impact of gender on ultimate match outcomes for applicants receiving a lower-third GA ranking. Chronological age (CA) is determined by time of birth, whereas biological age (BA) is based on changes on a cellular level and strongly correlates with morbidity, mortality, and longevity. Type 2 diabetes (T2D) associates with increased morbidity and mortality; thus, we hypothesized that BA would be increased and calculated it from biomarkers collected at routine clinical visits. Deidentified data was obtained from three cohorts of patients (20-80 years old)-T2D, type 1 diabetes (T1D), and prediabetes-and compared to gender- and age-matched non-diabetics. In this dissertation, we studied several applications of artificial intelligence applications to healthcare. In the first chapter, we examined a machine learning algorithm for classifying patients presenting to the emergency department with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Patients presenting with this life-threatening condition require a quick and accurate assessment of whether the condition is infectious or cardiac in etiology as the treatments for these etiologies of ARDS differ significantly.
