Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
What does education mean to individuals in the world today? Education is a way one can attain or improve his or her ability to lead and survive in the society of ours. Without educational training of the mind, it may be impossible to realize the importance of adaptability of living in the environment. Without education, It may also be difficult to embellish the use of both the mental and physical attributes possessed by individual beings.
What really is education? Education is the training of the mind to perform desire functions or to perpetuate the modality of obtaining an end or …

Knee Extension Rate Of Torque Development Deficit Is Not Captured By Standard Functional Performance Measures Post- Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction, Michael Jeanfavre, Matthew Klein, Darragh Lynch, Luke Esquerra, Jonathan Dickey, Jessica Mena
Faculty Publications - College of Physical Therapy
Background
Criteria for full recovery following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACL-R) include the ability to achieve >90% limb symmetry in maximal quadriceps strength (QI) and functional hop tests. Additionally, knee extension rate of torque development (RTD) is an important performance metric post-ACL-R. This study investigated the rate of recovery of these performance metrics in a recreationally athletic population.
Purpose
To investigate RTD at 30% (RTD30), 50% (RTD50), and 90% (RTD90) of maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) recovery rate compared to knee extension peak torque and hop test performance post ACL-R.
Study Design
Descriptive, prospective, cross-sectional single-cohort study.

What Is Toe Spring In Running Shoes?, Matthew Klein
What Is Toe Spring In Running Shoes?, Matthew Klein
Faculty Publications - College of Physical Therapy
The last several years have seen a dramatic change in the looks and design of modern running shoes. As maximal shoe design continues to influence the industry, a majority of shoes are seeing large increases in sole height and bending stiffness and increasing usage of plates. In addition to thicker, stiffer, and plated shoes, you may have noticed an increase in the frequency of another rarely discussed but important component of many running shoes, a large upward curve right under the toes. This feature is called toe spring. With it becoming increasingly prevalent, it’s worth knowing why it exists, …
It’S Okay To Be A Heel Striker, Matthew Klein
It’S Okay To Be A Heel Striker, Matthew Klein
Faculty Publications - College of Physical Therapy
One of the most frequent questions I’m asked by runners is, “How should my foot land on the ground?” In the wake of the previous decade’s barefoot/minimal shoe movement, people continue to emphasize certain foot strikes over others. (Heel striking is the primary “other” in these discussions.)
Claims are often made about injury prevention, improved speed, improved running efficiency, and certain ways being more “natural.” As with most universal claims in running, there’s a great deal of misinformation here. Let’s look at the facts about foot strikes.

PCOM Scholarly Works
Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) are considered as the major constituents that cause hepatoxicity in Senecio plants. PAs can be found in about 3%-5% of the world's flowering plants. Nowadays, the identification method of PAs by separation and preparation was too slow and lacked effective power. A rapid method to identify PAs in plants must be developed. Based on the fragmentation regularity, the hepatoxic PAs and nonhepatoxic PAs were characterized by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). The detailed structures of PAs in five Senecio plants were identified based on tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) spectrum and chemical research information. In the present study, some …

Nanomaterials with tunable properties show promise because of their size-dependent electronic structure and controllable physical properties. The purpose of this research was to develop and validate environmentally safe nanomaterial-based approach for treatment of drinking water including removal and degradation of per- and polyfluorinated chemicals (PFAS). PFAS are surfactant chemicals with broad uses that are now recognized as contaminants with a significant risk to human health. They are commonly used in household and industrial products. They are extremely persistent in the environment because they possess both hydrophobic fluorine-saturated carbon chains and hydrophilic functional groups, along with being oleophobic. Traditional drinking water …

The Effect Of Endogenous Ligands Of The Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor On Antibody Expression In A Human B-Cell Model, Valerie Benedict
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Small changes in antibody expression have broad impacts on human health and disease. An environmental toxicant 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) induces profound immune suppression in animal models in an aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR)-mediated fashion. In a human Burkitt's lymphoma cell line (CL-01), TCDD inhibited IgG secretion and differentially impacted Ig heavy chain expression. In addition to TCDD, the AhR has several endogenous, dietary, and bacterial ligands such as 6-formylindolo[3,2-b]carbazole (FICZ) and indole, which are present within the human body at varied concentrations (0.30 mM- 6.64 mM). Both FICZ (100 nM) and indole (100 µM) significantly reduced IgG secretion. Overall antibody secretion is …
Development Of Ibuprofen Tablet With Polyethylene Oxide Using Fused Deposition Modeling (Fdm) 3d Printing Coupled With Hot-Melt Extrusion, Sooyeon Chung
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Ibuprofen is known to plasticize several polymers used in the pharmaceutical field, and it is considered challenging to achieve an immediate release by fused deposition modeling (FDM). Therefore, this study aimed to print ibuprofen tablet with a focus on achieving immediate release. Polyethylene oxide (Polyox WSR N80) was used as a main matrix to form the ibuprofen filament due to its water-soluble property and manifesting suitable mechanical property even with the high drug loading (40% w/w). Several release modifiers such as Kollidon VA64, Kollidon 12PF, Kollicoat IR, Kollidon CL, and Mannitol were added separately to the formulation to enhance the …

Manipulations Of A Memory Interference Paradigm, Lindsay Kyle Crawford
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The AB/DE, AC/FG paired associate learning task, which has been utilized in numerous experimental studies, is purported to induce both proactive (PI) and retroactive interference (RI) simultaneously. However, until now, there have not been any studies validating or determining the optimal format of this paradigm. As such, the purpose of this series of experiments was to make manipulations to the task in order to maximize its efficacy. Across the series of experiments implemented herein, we manipulated various aspects of the paradigm (e.g., semantic relatedness of the word pairs, number of trials) driven by theoretical underpinnings of memory interference theory. Experiments …
Rap1a Overlaps The Age/Rage Signaling Cascade In Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Stephanie Burr
Rap1a Overlaps The Age/Rage Signaling Cascade In Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Stephanie Burr
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Diabetic individuals have an increased risk for developing cardiovascular disease due to stiffening of the left ventricle, which is thought to occur, in part, by increased AGE/RAGE signaling. Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) accumulate within the body over time, and under hyperglycemic conditions, the formation and accumulation of AGEs is accelerated. AGEs exert their effect by binding to their receptor (RAGE) and can induce myofibroblast differentiation, oxidative stress, cell-extracellular matrix contraction, and cell migration. Previous findings from our lab have demonstrated that preventing the production of Rap1a, a Ras-like GTPase signaling protein, in cardiac fibroblasts will decrease type 2 diabetes …
Methylene Blue As Light And Reactive Oxygen Species Sensitive Ligand: Appicability In Hybrid Drug And Material Synthesis, Huy Dao
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Methylene blue (MB) with a 10-N-carbamoyl linkage was discovered and developed as a multifunctional far-red (660 nm) photocleavable ligand capable of rendering a series of MB conjugated compounds with off-to-on fluorescence switch properties through the controlled release of MB. The released MB was successfully demonstrated to be an effective photosensitizer, imaging probe, and therapeutic agent. The complete release of MB was achieved with a cumulative light dose of 15 J/cm2. The photosensitivity was demonstrated to be dependent on the type of chemical bond at 10-N of the phenothiazine ring which links MB to a side group. Specifically, the urea bond-based …

An increasing number of protein drugs are used in the clinic to treat a broad range of diseases. However, because of their large molecular sizes and high hydrophilicity, protein drugs are not orally bioavailable, which commonly require intravenous, intramuscular or subcutaneous injection. Thermosensitive polymers have been widely investigated as in situ depots for sustained drug release delivered through subcutaneous route.Albumin is the most abundant proteins in bloodstream. It has long half-life (19 days in human) and plays important roles such as acting as carrier for fatty acids, amino acids, waste products and medical compounds. Albumin has been studied for decades …

We employed mutual information (MI) analysis to detect motions affecting the mechanical resistance of the human-engineered protein Top7. The results are based on the MI analysis of pair contact correlations measured in steered molecular dynamics (SMD) trajectories and their statistical dependence on global unfolding. This study is the first application of the MI analysis to SMD forced unfolding, and we furnish specific SMD recommendations for the utility of parameters and options in the TimeScapes package. The MI analysis provided a global overview of the effect of perturbation on the stability of the protein. We also employed a more conventional trajectory …
