Development And Clinical Validation Of Knowledge-Based Planning Models For Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy Of Early-Stage Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer Patients, Justin David Visak

Theses and Dissertations--Radiation Medicine

Lung stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) is a viable alternative to surgical intervention for the treatment of early-stage non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. This therapy achieves strong local control rates by delivering ultra-high, conformal radioablative doses in typically one to five fractions. Historically, lung SBRT plans are manually generated using 3D conformal radiation therapy, dynamic conformal arcs (DCA), intensity-modulated radiation therapy, and more recently via volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) on a C-arm linear accelerator (linac). Manually planned VMAT is an advanced technique to deliver high-quality lung SBRT due to its dosimetric capabilities and utilization of flattening-filter free beams to improve …

When trying to understand risk factors for a disease, even before we know the causal agents, it is necessary to create a surveillance data set that answers the questions of who, when, and where, and includes any potential covariates which may either promote or prevent the disease. There are a wide variety of surveillance data. For example, hospital discharge data, such as the New York Statewide Planning and Research Cooperative System (SPARCS) data, encompass all hospitalized cases in the state, while clinical datasets cover a specially constructed population in pursuit of research of a certain disease type. Analysis of surveillance …

Legacy And Emerging Per- And Polyfluoroalkyl Substances : Analysis, Environmental Distribution, And Bioconcentration, Richard Anthony Brase

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) constitute a broad class of anthropogenic chemicals that have been used in numerous industrial and consumer-product applications since the late 1940s. The environmental persistence of these compounds in combination with their widespread commercial use have led PFAS to be recognized as contaminants of concern on the global scale. Despite regulatory efforts calling for the decreased use of certain perfluorocarboxylic and -sulfonic acids referred to as “legacy” PFAS, these compounds continue to be detected in both environmental and biological matrices. Moreover, manufacturers have begun to replace the legacy PFAS with emerging alternatives for which the regulations …

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are emerging as key molecules regulating several cellular pathways and contributing to the development and progression of different diseases including cancer. The epithelial-to- mesenchymal transition (EMT), a molecular reprogramming process that plays a critical role in cancer metastasis, involves a complex interaction between protein coding and non-coding transcripts including lncRNAs. Understanding the biological significance of those lncRNAs of relatively unknown function, may help to uncover potential therapeutic targets for the aggressive subtypes of breast and other cancers. In this study, we examined the expression profiles of more than 17,000 lncRNAs in a large set of patients’ …

Monstrous And Beautiful: Jungian Archetypes In Wilde’S Salomé, Nayana Rajnish Jan 2021

Monstrous And Beautiful: Jungian Archetypes In Wilde’S Salomé, Nayana Rajnish

English (MA) Theses

The subject of my research is the 1891 play Salomé, by Oscar Wilde and my thesis addresses the modern psychological implications of the cultural truths revealed by Wilde's re-vision of the myth of that biblical femme fatale. I argue that in fashioning a tragic heroine out of a female monster figure of “Immortal Vice”, Oscar Wilde created a document that captures two contradictory narratives: one in which Salomé plays the heroine of a tragedy and another in which she performs the role and functions of a villain. By employing Carl Jung's psychology of the archetypes, I am enabled …
