Natural & Applied Sciences Faculty Publications
Purpose: This work describes the late-stage product portfolios of the biotechnology companies that completed initial public offerings (IPOs) from 1997 to 2016. We asked whether these emerging companies continue to develop innovative, biologic products and produce the innovation promised by the early biotechnology industry.
Methods: We identified therapeutic products that reached Phase III development from 1997 to 2016, the characteristics of the products, the dates of the initiation of Phase III and product approval, proxy indicators of the innovativeness of each product, and the contribution of each biotechnology company. Companies were characterized by IPO window and clinical status of the …

Sociology Faculty Publications and Presentations
BACKGROUND: Home-Based Primary Care (HBPC) has demonstrated success in decreasing risk of hospitalization and improving patient satisfaction through patient targeting and integrating long-term services and supports. Less is known about how HBPC teams approach social factors.
OBJECTIVE: Describe HBPC providers’ knowledge of social complexity among HBPC patients and how this knowledge impacts care delivery.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Between 2018 and 2019, we conducted in-person semi-structured interviews with 14HBPCproviders representing nursing, medicine, physical therapy, pharmacy, and psychology, at an urban Veterans Affairs (VA) medical center. We also conducted field observations of 6 HBPC team meetings and 2 home visits.
APPROACH: We …

Section of Cardiology
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The disease mainly affects respiratory system. Its common clinical findings include fever, cough and shortness of breath. Characteristic radiological features of the disease include peripherally distributed, bilateral ground-glass opacities, predominantly involving the lower lung zones. In this report, we present a case of COVID-19 disease presenting with spontaneous pneumothorax. A 26-year male patient was admitted to the Emergency Department with fever, dry cough, shortness of breath and right-sided chest pain. Radiographic imaging of the patient revealed pneumothorax on the right and peripherally distributed non-homogenous opacification. …

A Simulated Reality For Patient Care: An Alternative To The Social Distancing Barriers Of Covid-19, Melissa Wholeben
A Simulated Reality For Patient Care: An Alternative To The Social Distancing Barriers Of Covid-19, Melissa Wholeben
Nursing Faculty Publications
At present, the conditions brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic affects the consistency, quality, and amount of exposure prelicensing nursing students have to hands-on clinical experiences. Hospitals and other health care organizations are limiting or prohibiting student nurse clinical participation within their environments to comply with communicable disease policies and protect student and patient health. This contributes to an atmosphere in which entry-level nursing students may come into the workforce lacking a sound experiential base obtained in a clinical setting due to social distancing and other pandemic restrictions. Due to decreasing hands-on clinical experiences, it is important to fashion a …

Smoking And Early-Onset Basal Cell Carcinoma, Zhaopei Liu
Smoking And Early-Onset Basal Cell Carcinoma, Zhaopei Liu
Public Health Theses
Background – Smoking has been identified as a risk factor for many cancers. While many studies have investigated the association between smoking and basal cell carcinoma (BCC), the results have been inconsistent, and no study has evaluated this association among a young population.
Methods – Early-onset BCC cases (n=374) and controls with minor benign skin conditions (n=384) under age 40 were identified through Yale Dermatopathology. Participants over 18 years old were asked whether they ever smoked (defined as ever smoked at least 100 cigarettes) during an in-person interview. Those who responded affirmatively were then asked about their smoking history. We …

Prevalence And Severity Of Malnutrition In People Living With Hiv On Chronic Haemodialysis In Dar Es Salaam., Hanifa Mbithe
Master of Medicine in Internal Medicine
BACKGROUND: Human immunodeficiency virus is still a global burden more so in sub-Saharan Africa. Chronic kidney disease and end-stage renal disease are important comorbid conditions that are prevalent in HIV-infected individuals. Patients who are HIV positive and on hemodialysis have triple risk factors for development of malnutrition (i.e. Human immunodeficiency virus, chronic kidney disease, and haemodialysis). Malnutrition greatly impacts these patient’s morbidity and mortality and thus the great need to address this gap which will improve their prognosis. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to assess the prevalence and severity of malnutrition in people living with HIV on chronic …

Modified Pre-Pcr Protocol For Detection Of Bacteria In Blood Samples Of Patients With Sepsis, Phanni Wanthong
Modified Pre-Pcr Protocol For Detection Of Bacteria In Blood Samples Of Patients With Sepsis, Phanni Wanthong
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Sepsis and septic shock are leading causes of deaths in hospitals. The most common cause of blood stream infection is bacteria. To reduce mortality, a rapid and accurate bacterial detection in sepsis patients is essential. It is necessary to identify pathogens based on their species for appropriate choice of antibiotics. In this study, we aimed to improve the pre-PCR procedure for detection of bacteria in blood samples and to compare the performance between real-time PCR, conventional PCR and blood culture. Blood samples from 16 sepsis patients were separated into whole blood, plasma, buffy coat and white blood cell. Bacterial nucleic …
