Test-Retest Reliability And Minimal Detectable Change Of The Computerized Dynamic Posturography Proprio For Adults With Chronic Traumatic Brain Injury, Guilherme Manna Cesar, Thad W. Buster, Judith M. Burnfield

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Purpose: Balance deficits after brain injury, including reactive recovery from unexpected perturbations, can persist well after rehabilitation is concluded. While traditional clinical assessments are practical, the anticipatory nature of the tasks may mask perceptible balance control. Computerized dynamic posturography can directly quantify capacity to respond to unexpected, external perturbations. This study examined the reliability of the computerized dynamic posturography assessment with the device PROPRIO® 4000 in adults with traumatic brain injury and created the minimal detectable change for its standardized test.

Methods: Ten adults (ages 21–55 years) with chronic (average 10 ± 6 years post-injury) severe (loss of consciousness 2–75 …

Catheter-To-Vessel Ratio And Catheter-Related Thrombosis In Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters: A Retrospective Review Of Records, Kristin Hartner

West Chester University Doctoral Projects

Catheter-related thrombosis (CRT) is a potential complication of peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs). With PICC use becoming more common, it is important to minimize this complication. Selection of an appropriately sized vessel can reduce the risk of catheter-related thrombosis. Research suggests that using a catheter-to-vessel-ratio (CVR) of 45% or less can minimize this risk. This quality improvement project was implemented to evaluate the impact of utilizing an ultrasound device that can measure catheter-to vessel ratio with peripherally inserted central catheter insertion by the vascular access team.

Data was collected using a retrospective chart review looking at CRT rates before and …

To investigate potential factors influencing initial length of hospital stay (LOS) for infants with neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) in Florida. The study population included 2984 term, singleton live births in 33 Florida hospitals. We used hierarchical linear modeling to evaluate the association of community, hospital, and individual factors with LOS. The average LOS of infants diagnosed with NAS varied significantly across hospitals. Individual-level factors associated with increased LOS for NAS included event year (P <  0.001), gestational age at birth (P <  0.001), maternal age (P = 0.002), maternal race and ethnicity (P <  0.001), maternal education (P = 0.032), and prenatal care adequacy (P <  0.001). Average annual hospital NAS volume (P = 0.022) was a significant hospital factor. NAS varies widely across hospitals in Florida. In addition to focusing on treatment regimens, to reduce LOS, public health and quality improvement initiatives should identify and adopt strategies that can minimize the prevalence and impact of these contributing factors.

Workplace Lactation Support And Breastfeeding Practices In Employed Mothers, Robin Ray

Theses and Dissertations--Nursing

Low rates of breastfeeding are a global public health issue. Despite national and international health agency recommendations for breastfeeding until infants are six months of age when solid foods are introduced and continued breastfeeding until 12 months of age or older, many mothers in the United States discontinue breastfeeding at an early age. Return to work after childbirth is one of the leading contributing factors to early cessation of breastfeeding in employed mothers. Understanding the association between individual and organizational factors and breastfeeding practices in employed mothers is essential for the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs and policies to …

Why Do You Wear A Mask? Children’S Conceptualizations Of Covid-19 And Contagion Avoidance Behaviors, Emily Hillman

Scripps Senior Theses

With the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, a need has emerged for psychological research on children’s understanding of infectious disease transmission. However, little existing research examines the link between children’s cognitive reasoning about illness and their subsequent behaviors regarding its transmissibility. This study will examine children’s conceptualizations of contagious illnesses such as COVID-19 and their subsequent contagion avoidance. A mixed methods approach will be used to establish the content of children’s conceptualizations of contagion and level of causal reasoning related to illness transmission. Dyads will be constructed comprising 4-12-year-old children and their parents. It is expected that parental contagion avoidance …

Use Of Small Molecule Fanconi Anemia Pathway Inhibitors As Sensitizing Agents To Laromustine., Sam W. Marchant Jan 2021

Use Of Small Molecule Fanconi Anemia Pathway Inhibitors As Sensitizing Agents To Laromustine., Sam W. Marchant

Honors Theses

Laromustine is an experimental chemotherapeutic sulfonyl hydrazine prodrug shown in clinical trials to be effective against acute myeloid leukemia. The mechanism of action of laromustine involves interstrand crosslinking, via chloroethylation, and enzyme inhibition, caused by carbamoylation. The work described herein aims to investigate whether inhibition of the replication-dependent interstrand crosslink repair Fanconi Anemia pathway further sensitizes cells to laromustine. By measuring metabolic activity immediately after drug exposure, we find laromustine to be equally as cytotoxic towards Fanconi Anemia deficient and wild type cells. However, through clonogenic assays we show Fanconi Anemia mutations sensitize cells to laromustine’s anti-proliferative effect. Furthermore, we …

Evaluation Of Test Methods For Determining Footwear Slip Resistance On Ice Surfaces, Chantal Gauvin, Atena Roshan Fekr, Yue Li, Gordon Wong, Wayne Cheng, David Pearsall, Tilak Dutta

Rapports de recherche scientifique

Slipping on ice is one of the main risks of outdoor occupational activities during winter. Ice and freezing rain were involved in 14% of slip, trip and fall (STF) accidents from 2014 to 2016 in Quebec. Many workers who perform outdoor activities rely on their boots to prevent them from slipping. However, choosing the best slip resistant footwear is challenging. Currently, there is no standard test method for evaluating slip resistance of footwear on ice surfaces. The SATRA STM 603 whole shoe tester is used in standard test methods (ASTM International, 2019b, F2913-19; International Organization for Standardization [ISO], 2019, 13287:2019) …
