Enhancing Teamwork And Collaboration In Nursing Students, Sharon Walker
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Effective teamwork and collaboration are vital components in the healthcare team’s ability to deliver safe, patient-centered care. New graduate nurses play a crucial role in the healthcare team; however, research reveals that many students' express anxieties when communicating with other healthcare personnel. The purpose of this project was to enhance students’ knowledge and understanding of the importance of effective teamwork and collaboration, ultimately influencing the delivery of high-quality and safe patient care. In an effort to promote better patient outcomes and limit failures, the integration of TeamSTEPPS® training and simulation into nursing curricula offers students an opportunity to build …

Enhancing Learning And Self-Efficacy With Virtual Simulation, Lawone J. Lane
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Background Evidence is lacking for support in the use of virtual simulation as a viable alternative for experiential learning and enhancing satisfaction, self-efficacy, and learning.
Problem Virtual simulation activities can provide opportunities for nursing students outside of clinical sites. In prelicensure nursing education, how does the development of a virtual simulation compare to traditional nursing education and does virtual simulation enhance student satisfaction, self-efficacy, and learning?
Approach A non-experimental descriptive design was used to examine attitudes of prelicensure nursing students related to perceived satisfaction, self-efficacy, and learning following a virtual simulation in place of a clinical site experience.
Outcomes Nursing …

Orthodontics and Endodontics Theses
Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of the Wirele-X (Forum Tec, Ashkelon, Israel), a new Bluetooth-enabled electronic apex locator (EAL). The accuracy of the Wirele-X and the Root ZX II (J. Morita, Tokyo, Japan) was compared in vitro using an alginate model. Materials/Methods: Thirty-one extracted single-rooted human teeth with mature apices were decoronated at the CEJ. Under 10X magnification, actual canal lengths (ACL) were determined. The teeth were embedded in alginate and electronic canal length measurements were obtained using the Root ZX II and Wirele-X EALs. Each tooth was measured three times with both EALs. …

Effects Of The Needle Exchange Program Implemented In West Virginia, Amber Graves, Anthony B. Uriarte, Katherine Duty
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Introduction: West Virginia has had a recent spike in infectious diseases such as HIV and hepatitis due to increased rates of injectable drug use. The rising costs associated with such diseases have been a cause for concern in the sector of healthcare and public health. In the state, the exchanging of dirty needles has resulted in the spread of bloodborne pathogens, however, the implementation of needle exchange programs has sought to decrease the rates of infection, improve health outcomes, and lower healthcare costs. However, there is a question as to the effectiveness of such programs.

Background: Higher education programs that admit students to sequential curricula incur a substantial financial loss when an enrolled student fails to continue in the program for whatever reason. In many instances, the seat cannot be filled, and valuable tuition dollars often over $90,000 per student is lost to the institution. In addition to financial loss, Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) programs are required to report and explain rates to the Commission for Accreditation of Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE). Admission committees at Doctor of Physical Therapy programs seek candidates that will be successful in the program and pass the National Physical …

The Impact Of Volunteer Transportation On Older Adult’S Engagement In Meaningful Activities, Belinda Alexander
Occupational Therapy Doctorate Capstone Projects
Background: Without accessible transportation alternatives, many older adults experience declined activity levels, social isolation, and decreased occupational engagement resulting from their lack of community mobility and access. Volunteer transportation programs have been successfully used as an additional community mobility option for many older adults, especially those unable to access the traditional public transportation options, such as buses or taxis, found in many communities.
Purpose: While numerous transportation options, or alternatives, may exist in a community, no studies to date have examined or compared engagement levels related to a specific form of alternative transportation. Therefore, the purpose of this …
Characterization And Discovery Of A Selective Small Molecule Modulator Of Mitochondrial Complex I Targeting A Unique Binding Site, Jefin Jose
VCU's Medical Journal Club: The Work of Future Health Professionals
Zhang et al. developed a potential therapeutic drug that selectively binds to the IF site of Complex I, revealing the role of ZCM-I-1 as a potential regulator of ROS species within the mitochondria at moderate concentrations. More importantly, the development of this drug has been used to justify the mitochondria dysfunction hypothesis of Alzheimer's Disease. However, the key mechanism for Alzheimers remains unclear.

Obesity, a characteristic of metabolic syndrome, is also associated with chronic inflammation and the development of autoimmune diseases. However, the relationship between obesity and autoimmune diseases remains to be investigated in depth. Here, we compared hepatic gene expression profiles among high-fat diet (HFD) mice using the primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) mouse model based on the chronic expression of interferon gamma (IFNγ) (ARE-Del-/- mice). The top differentially expressed genes affected by upstream transcriptional regulators IFNγ, LPS, and TNFα displayed an overlap in HFD and ARE-Del-/- mice, indicating that obesity-induced liver inflammation may be dependent on signaling via IFNγ. The top pathways …

United States Public Health Resources
Autoimmune disorders are the third most common diseases in the United States, and affect the daily lives of millions of people. In this study, we analyzed patient samples, utilized a transgenic mouse model and human B cells to reveal Natural Killer Cell Transcript 4 (NK4) as a novel regulator that promotes the development of autoimmune disorders. NK4 was significantly elevated in samples from patients with Sjӧgren's Syndrome (SS). SS patients show elevated NK4 levels. There is a strong and positive correlation between the increased levels of NK4 and the duration of SS. Interestingly, transgenic expression of NK4 in a mouse …

Overall, most metropolitan Nebraskans have confidence in their local institutions (public safety agencies in their community, public schools in their community, and voting and election systems in their county). However, many have very little confidence in many national institutions (the U.S. Senate, the U.S. House of Representatives and the Presidency) as well as the Governor.
Metropolitan Nebraskans most trust information received from friends/family/ acquaintances, local news sources (TV and newspapers), public sources (PBS and public radio) and state newspapers. They least trust information from social networking sites, Internet blogs, and Fox News.

Conclusion
As we learn the lessons of the COVID-19 pandemic, and start recovering and rebuilding, we have an opportunity to offer a more comprehensive, more fulfilling, and more inclusive vision of what constitutes public health. And for a generation of children facing unprecedented pressures and stresses, day in and day out, change can’t come soon enough.
It won’t come overnight. Many of the recommendations offered in this Advisory require structural buy-in and change.
But everyone has a role to play in combating this mental health pandemic. Without individual engagement, no amount of energy or resources can overcome the biggest barrier …

Impact Of Bowel Management Guidelines On Documentation And Patient Outcomes In The Intensive Care Unit, Alana Trottier, Paul Blakeslee, Kristiina Hyrkas
Costas T. Lambrew Research Retreat 2021
Introduction
• Bowel management (BM) is an inadvertently overlooked aspect of patient care for critically ill patients who have complex, immediate life-threatening health issues.
• Bowel dysfunction is common with the reported incidence of diarrhea between 3.3%-78% and constipation between 20-83%
• Studies suggest that BM guidelines can standardize care, improve documentation, and impact patient outcomes
• Use of BM guidelines has remained low, probably influenced by clinicians’ resistance to change, resulting in small to moderate improvements and difficulties sustaining new practices
• We anticipated that sustained changes require recognizing clinicians’ current practice, integrating modifications into existing workflow, and engaging …
