Guillain-Barre Syndrome Amid Osteosarcoma Treatment: A Therapeutic Dilemma And Literature Review., Geraldine Peralta Suarez, David W Deng, Raquel Silva, Gabriel Tinoco
Oncology Articles
Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is a clinical syndrome with multiple variants. GBS is defined as an acute demyelinating polyneuropathy commonly preceded by infection (bacterial or viral), trauma, or inflammatory processes, which triggers an autoimmune response that affects the peripheral nervous system. This case report describes a patient with high-grade osteosarcoma that completed neoadjuvant chemotherapy and underwent surgical resection with no immediate complications. Fourteen days after the surgery, the patient developed an acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculopathy consistent with GBS. As the five-year survival without chemotherapy is only around 20%, this challenging clinical scenario raised questions regarding adjuvant chemotherapy's safe completion in this …

Plasmid-Based Reverse Genetics For Probing Phosphorylation-Dependent Viroplasm Formation In Rotaviruses, Jeanette M Criglar, Sue E Crawford, Mary K Estes
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
Rotavirus (RV) replication occurs in cytoplasmic compartments, known as viroplasms, that are composed of viral and cellular proteins. Viroplasm formation requires RV nonstructural proteins NSP2 and NSP5 and cellular lipid droplets (LDs); however, the mechanisms required for viroplasm assembly remain largely unknown. We previously identified two conformationally-distinct forms of NSP2 (dNSP2, vNSP2) found in RV-infected cells that interact differentially with hypo- and hyperphosphorylated NSP5, respectively, and indicate a coordinated phosphorylation-dependent mechanism regulating viroplasm assembly. We also reported that phosphorylation of dNSP2 on serine 313 by the cellular kinase CK1α triggers the localization of vNSP2 to sites of viroplasm assembly and …

Aims: Platelet rich plasma (PRP) has been used in tissue repair to treat numerous inflammatory pathophysiologies. Recent studies have elucidated that the bioactive lipid fraction of PRP significantly contributes towards the resolution of inflammation. There has been great interest in how therapeutics could modulate the PRP lipidome to formulate a more pro-resolving matrix. Many of the pathways used to produce either pro-resolving or pro-inflammatory lipids are shared between ω-3 and ω-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). Here, we explored the separate and interacting effects acute exogenous ω-3 PUFA supplementation and aspirin had on the lipidome of PRP within 6 hours.

Suspicion Encoded: Women Of Color And Biometric Technology In The United States, Lilith A. Saylor
sprinkle: an undergraduate journal of feminist and queer studies
This paper explores the commodification of privacy through biometric technology in the United States. It examines the impact of this technology on poor women of color (WOC), arguing that poor WOC face intersectional discrimination based on the convergence of sex, race, and class in their identities. I highlight the unique and powerful intrusion of biometric technology into the lives of poor WOC, and argue that the connection between data and the physical body created through biometric data has formed an environment in which the state wields unrestricted control in all spheres over the privacy of poor WOC.

Working Through A Virtual Reality: Empowering Experienced Nurses Through Hybrid Orientation Programs, Latoria Massey
Master of Science in Nursing Theses and Projects
The year 2020 was not the year of the nurse that many expected. Frontline teammates were put at risk for so much more than just the usually fast-paced clinical and ethical decisions of their time. In a matter of months, the same professionals that were noted for being hard-working, diligent individuals were now fatigued, burned out, and working under some stressed and unrealistic constraints. The staffing needs in several acute care facilities changed drastically as the global crisis now known as COVID-19 continued to spread. Nationwide redeployment models were initiated, pulling many nurses into new unchartered territory. Among the stress …

Cardiac Telemetry Monitoring: Understanding Misutilization And How To Ameliorate, Stanley Yeargin
Master of Science in Nursing Theses and Projects
Inappropriate usage of cardiac telemetry in the hospital setting is a problem that plagues healthcare facilities almost ubiquitously. By writing orders for a telemetry monitor when it is not needed, providers are potentially increasing the costs of that patients stay in multiple areas. The goals of this project are to decrease telemetry monitoring misutilization, thus decreasing costs in several different areas. The plan is to create interventions, based on literature reviews of previous studies, and enact new guidelines that will lead to success of project goals. This plan could have significant impacts in the areas of patient length of stay, …
Pandemic Recovery In Nursing: Labor Shortage And Financial Devastation, Rebecca Rogers
Pandemic Recovery In Nursing: Labor Shortage And Financial Devastation, Rebecca Rogers
Master of Science in Nursing Theses and Projects
The COVID-19 pandemic inadvertently caused one of the greatest nursing labor shortages in history. Many healthcare organizations were forced to rely on external agency nurses to staff their organizations and care for large volumes of patients. The high demand for these nurses caused an increase in costs for external contracted labor. The costs of external agency use became financially devastating for healthcare organizations who had not budgeted for this expense and still the external agency use did not resolve the issue of nursing labor shortages. Learning and recovering from the labor and financial costs of the COVID-19 pandemic requires an …

Reducing Hospital Readmissions Using The Self Care Deficit Theory, Katherine Decillis Taylor
Master of Science in Nursing Theses and Projects
This project aims to reduce inpatient hospital readmission occurrences within 30 days of an initial inpatient hospitalization. Patients at high risk for readmission may have deficits in their ability to meet self-care needs after discharge. Orem’s Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory provided the theoretical framework for the project. The education provided by this project can teach nurses to identify patients who may be at high risk for readmission. Once identified, nurses can advocate for the patient’s needs.

Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva -Second Skeleton, Emily Paciga
Student Research Poster Presentations 2021
For my poster presentation, I chose how disease, illness, and sickness are defined differently in medicine. Specifically, the humanities bring awareness to treating the person as a whole rather than their prognosis. The ability to differentiate the aforementioned criteria allows for the individual to have the best treatment and outcome. I decided to show how within Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP) there are different definitions of the diagnosis.
The poster delves into the definition of disease as the medical definition of the diagnosis—essentially, what the doctor informs to the patient. With FOP, common characteristic of the disease include stiff rigidity of …

Reducing Dose In Coronary Computed Tomography Angiography (Ccta), Mariah Ambrosio
Student Research Poster Presentations 2021
This project describes the different techniques that can be implemented during coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) to reduce patient dose. CCTA exams are becoming increasingly popular in diagnosing coronary artery disease (CAD) due to its noninvasive nature. However, CCTA exams provide some of the greatest radiation dose of any computed tomography exam. As a result of this exam, patients can receive a total effective dose anywhere from 15 millisieverts (mSv) to 20 mSv and higher. This project discusses reducing dose by means of electrocardiogram (ECG) – triggered prospective gating, reducing tube potential and bolus tracking. Also, the proper use and …
