Background
Accurate quantification of radioactivity, measured by an integrated positron emission tomography (PET) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system, is still a challenge. One aspect of such a challenge is to correct for the hardware attenuation, such as the patient table and radio frequency (RF) resonators. For PET/MRI systems, computed tomography (CT) is commonly used to produce hardware attenuation correction (AC) maps, by converting Hounsfield units (HU) to a linear attenuation coefficients (LAC) map at the PET energy level 511 keV, using a bilinear model. The model does not address beam hardening, nor higher density materials, which can lead to …

Hip preservation and peri-trochanteric procedures are becoming more commonplace for the arthroplasty surgeon. Understanding the reimbursement for these procedures remains a challenge for those looking to expand this portion of their practice. In order to financially maximize the surgeon’s efforts, we present recommendations for hip preservation procedural coding.
Catholic Terminal Sedation-A New Framework For Providing Terminal Palliative Sedation As A Requirement In Catholic Healthcare Organizations, Noah Dimas
Graduate Student Research Symposium
The present attitudes surrounding death and dying in the United States have been trending toward the acceptance of so-called “Assisted Death” interventions at the end-of-life (EoL), specifically Physician-Assisted Suicide. The acceptance of these interventions is rooted in the notion of autonomy within the American culture of medicine that generally states a patient is allowed to request whatever medical interventions they wish. As such, legislative bodies around the United States have begun to legalize Assisted Death in response to the regularly cited desire to die peacefully and without pain from an expected terminal illness. However, for Catholic healthcare organizations, there is …

Exploration Of The Cultural Beliefs, Values And Practices Of African American Women Regarding Postpartum Depression: A Mini-Focused Ethnography, Stephanie Jacobs
Graduate Student Research Symposium
The purpose of this study was to understand the cultural beliefs, values, and practices of African American women regarding postpartum depression. Postpartum depression (PPD) is the most prevalent perinatal mental health illness in women and affects approximately 10 to 20% of all women in the United States. African American women have a disproportionately higher prevalence of postpartum depression (35-67%) and experience it differently. The research question was: What are the cultural care beliefs, values and practices of African American women regarding postpartum depression? This mini-focused ethnography was the method used for this study. It included semi-structured interviews of four African …

Latent HIV-1 proviruses are capable of reactivating productive lytic infection, but the precise molecular mechanisms underlying emergence from latency are poorly understood. In this study, we determined the contribution of the transcription factors NF-κB, NFAT, and AP-1 in the reactivation of latent HIV following T-cell receptor (TCR) activation using Jurkat T-cell clones harboring single latent HIV proviruses. Our findings demonstrate that during reactivation from latency, NF-κB enhances HIV transcription while NFAT inhibits it by competing with NF-κB for overlapping binding sites on the HIV long terminal repeat (LTR). We have also demonstrated for the first time the molecular contribution of …

PCTP (phosphatidylcholine transfer protein) was discovered recently to regulate aggregation of human platelets stimulated with PAR4 activating peptide (PAR4AP). However, the role of PCTP following thrombin stimulation, the mechanisms by which PCTP contributes to platelet activation, and the role of PCTP with other receptors remained unknown. As mouse platelets do not express PCTP, we treated human platelets with various agonists in the presence of the specific PCTP inhibitor A1. We observed that PCTP inhibition significantly reduced dense granule secretion in response to thrombin, PAR1AP, PAR4AP, convulxin (GPVI agonist) and FcγRIIA crosslinking. In contrast, among these agonists, PCTP inhibition reduced aggregation …

Exploring The Relationship Between Work Engagement And Psychological Contract Fulfillment In Health Care Organization-Employed Physicians, Oyebanjo Olowe
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
ABSTRACT
While physician employment by healthcare organizations (HCO) in the United States continues to rise and private practice ownership continues to decline, many physicians are disengaged and leaving their organization as their job expectations are not fulfilled. Concurrently, some are changing practice patterns that may lead to decreased access to care despite the forecasted shortage of 84,900 fewer physicians and the aging US population's project growth by 2033. Prior work on physician work engagement has been practitioner-based, never using the widely accepted validated Utrecht work engagement scale. Also, there has been little work on psychological contract fulfillment (PCF ) in …

Parents’ perception of their preschool children’s weight status was measured using a …
Quality Of Life Of Older Adults With Complicated Grief Receiving Accelerated Resolution Therapy: A Mixed Methods Study, Tina M. Mason
Quality Of Life Of Older Adults With Complicated Grief Receiving Accelerated Resolution Therapy: A Mixed Methods Study, Tina M. Mason
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Background: It is estimated that 10-15% of bereaved people in the general population are experiencing prolonged, complicated grief after a loss. Persons with complicated grief experience a disruption of usual, pre-death activities, destructive thoughts and actions, and can develop or find a worsening of comorbidities and impairments. All of these, in turn, worsen the experience. Complicated grief reactions can compound the stress of the loss, disrupting the normal functioning of the central nervous, immune, cardiovascular, neuroendocrine, and gastrointestinal systems, which in turn can contribute to poor quality of life for the surviving family member. However, due to a paucity of …

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are a group of conditions associated with heart and blood vessels and are considered the leading cause of death globally. Coronary heart disease, atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction represents the CVDs. Since CVDs are associated with a series of pathophysiological conditions with an alarming mortality and morbidity rate, early diagnosis and appropriate therapeutic approaches are critical for saving patients’ lives. Conventionally, diagnostic tools are employed to detect disease conditions, whereas therapeutic drug candidates are administered to mitigate diseases. However, the advent of nanotechnological platforms has revolutionized the current understanding of pathophysiology and therapeutic measures. The concept of combinatorial therapy …

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant neuroectodermal disorder associated withincreased risk for several neural and non-neural malignancies. The link between NF1 and breast cancer hasrecently been established, with patients with NF1 being at higher risk for developing breast cancer, morelikely to get breast cancer at a younger age, and more likely to have their breast cancer present with moreadverse prognostic factors. Although rare, several cases of NF1 patients with contralateral breast cancerhave been mentioned in the literature. We report the case of one such patient who developed contralateralbreast cancer 40 years after her initial breast cancer diagnosis.

Adolescents are an increasing proportion of low and middle-income country populations. Their coming of age is foundational for health behaviour, as well as social and productive citizenship. We mapped intervention areas for adolescent sexual and reproductive health, including HIV, mental health and violence prevention to sectors responsible for them using a framework that highlights settings, roles and alignment. Out of 11 intervention areas, health is the lead actor for one, and a possible lead actor for two other interventions depending on the implementation context. All other interventions take place outside of the health sector, with the health sector playing a …

BACKGROUND: Failure to clear Aβ from the brain is partly responsible for Aβ brain accumulation in Alzheimer's disease (AD). A critical protein for clearing Aβ across the blood-brain barrier is the efflux transporter P-glycoprotein (P-gp). In AD, P-gp levels are reduced, which contributes to impaired Aβ brain clearance. However, the mechanism responsible for decreased P-gp levels is poorly understood and there are no strategies available to protect P-gp. We previously demonstrated in isolated brain capillaries ex vivo that human Aβ40 (hAβ40) triggers P-gp degradation by activating the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway. In this pathway, hAβ40 initiates P-gp ubiquitination, leading to internalization and …
