Evaluating The Impact Of Governmental Partners On School Nutrition And Physical Activity Policies: A Survey Of Florida School Principals, Michael J. Swain, Glenn D. Israel

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

For decades, U.S. schools have implemented policies aimed at improving student nutrition and physical activity. Governmental agencies have led these efforts with funding and regulation, and implementation supported by health and agriculture agencies and university extension services at state and local levels. To understand the roles of these agencies in school health, and other factors leading to the implementation of school health policies, we surveyed school principals in Florida in 2018 on topics related to school nutrition and physical activity policies. Depending on the wellness policy, prevalence varied from 6 percent (Safe Routes to School) to 66 percent (wellness coordinator). …

Proteomic And Transcriptomic Profiling Reveal Different Aspects Of Aging In The Kidney., Yuka Takemon, Joel M Chick, Isabela Gerdes Gyuricza, Daniel A Skelly, Olivier Devuyst, Steven P Gygi, Gary Churchill, Ron Korstanje

Faculty Research 2021

Little is known about the molecular changes that take place in the kidney during the aging process. In order to better understand these changes, we measured mRNA and protein levels in genetically diverse mice at different ages. We observed distinctive change in mRNA and protein levels as a function of age. Changes in both mRNA and protein are associated with increased immune infiltration and decreases in mitochondrial function. Proteins show a greater extent of change and reveal changes in a wide array of biological processes including unique, organ-specific features of aging in kidney. Most importantly, we observed functionally important age-related …

Detection Of Myocardial Infarction Using Ecg And Multi-Scale Feature Concatenate, Jia-Zheng Jian, Tzong-Rong Ger, Han-Hua Lai, Chi-Ming Ku, Chiung-An Chen, Patricia Angela R. Abu

Department of Information Systems & Computer Science Faculty Publications

Diverse computer-aided diagnosis systems based on convolutional neural networks were applied to automate the detection of myocardial infarction (MI) found in electrocardiogram (ECG) for early diagnosis and prevention. However; issues; particularly overfitting and underfitting; were not being taken into account. In other words; it is unclear whether the network structure is too simple or complex. Toward this end; the proposed models were developed by starting with the simplest structure: a multi-lead features-concatenate narrow network (N-Net) in which only two convolutional layers were included in each lead branch. Additionally; multi-scale features-concatenate networks (MSN-Net) were also implemented where larger features were being …

Platelets As Drivers Of Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury After Stroke., Noor F Shaik, Raymond F Regan, Ulhas P Naik Mar 2021

Platelets As Drivers Of Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury After Stroke., Noor F Shaik, Raymond F Regan, Ulhas P Naik

Cardeza Foundation for Hematologic Research

Ischemic stroke is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide and, despite reperfusion either via thrombolysis or thrombectomy, stroke patients often suffer from lifelong disabilities. These persistent neurological deficits may be improved by treating the ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury that occurs following ischemic stroke. There are currently no approved therapies to treat I/R injury, and thus it is imperative to find new targets to decrease the burden of ischemic stroke and related diseases. Platelets, cell fragments from megakaryocytes, are primarily known for their role in hemostasis. More recently, investigators have studied the nonhemostatic role of platelets in inflammatory pathologies, such …

Polθ Promotes The Repair Of 5'-Dna-Protein Crosslinks By Microhomology-Mediated End-Joining, Gurushankar Chandramouly, Shuren Liao, Timur Rusanov, Nikita Borisonnik, Marissa L Calbert, Tatiana Kent, Katherine Sullivan-Reed, Umeshkumar Vekariya, Ekaterina Kashkina, Tomasz Skorski, Hong Yan, Richard T Pomerantz

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers

DNA polymerase θ (Polθ) confers resistance to chemotherapy agents that cause DNA-protein crosslinks (DPCs) at double-strand breaks (DSBs), such as topoisomerase inhibitors. This suggests Polθ might facilitate DPC repair by microhomology-mediated end-joining (MMEJ). Here, we investigate Polθ repair of DSBs carrying DPCs by monitoring MMEJ in Xenopus egg extracts. MMEJ in extracts is dependent on Polθ, exhibits the MMEJ repair signature, and efficiently repairs 5' terminal DPCs independently of non-homologous end-joining and the replisome. We demonstrate that Polθ promotes the repair of 5' terminal DPCs in mammalian cells by using an MMEJ reporter and find that Polθ confers resistance to …
