Language Interpreters’ Perspective Of The Interpreter-Genetic Counselor Working Alliance, Dacia Lipkea
Language Interpreters’ Perspective Of The Interpreter-Genetic Counselor Working Alliance, Dacia Lipkea
Theses and Dissertations
Interpreters are an asset to the genetic counseling process as they help to bridge both cultural and linguistic gaps. For various reasons, their ability to accurately render the often-complex information discussed in genetic counseling sessions is likely dependent on their ability to establish a working alliance and collaborate with genetic counselors to overcome any challenges. Studies in other healthcare fields document the elements crucial to forming a working alliance between interpreter and healthcare provider, but little research has been done specifically investigating how to form a working alliance in the context of the specialized nature of genetic counseling. The goal …
Promoting Civility In The Workplace: Addressing Bullying In New Graduate Nurses Using Simulation And Cognitive Rehearsal, Sandy Phan
Doctoral Projects
Bullying continues to be a widespread, devastating problem in nursing. Research indicates that bullying has a negative, rippling impact on nurses, organizations, and patient care. This evidence-based practice project aimed to enhance new graduate nurses’ abilities to identify and respond to bullying behaviors. The intervention used a mixed educational methodology of didactic, simulation role-play, and cognitive rehearsal. The project was implemented at a large academic healthcare system in Northern California. Outcomes were evaluated using Kirkpatrick levels 1-4 and the Clark Workplace Civility Index (CWCI). Participants reported that the educational intervention met intended learning objectives, enabled them to apply learned behaviors …
The Effects Of Virtual Reality On Symptom Distress In Patients Undergoing Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant, Colleen Vega, Robin Whitney, Josef Hannah, Grant Smith
The Effects Of Virtual Reality On Symptom Distress In Patients Undergoing Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant, Colleen Vega, Robin Whitney, Josef Hannah, Grant Smith
Doctoral Projects
The purpose of this QI project was to evaluate the effects of virtual reality (VR) on symptom distress experienced by individuals receiving an allogenic stem cell transplant. Allogenic transplants are associated with a moderate to high risk for distressing symptoms such as depression, anxiety, and pain. VR targets multiple sensory modalities, including auditory, visual or haptic experiences, by using computer-generated scenarios, which can interact with an individual and possibly diminish unpleasant symptoms. Twenty individuals aged 19 to 70 years (median age of 56.5 years) who were hospitalized in an academic setting received VR up to two sessions a week for …

Age-associated chronic, low grade systemic inflammation has been recognised as an important contributing factor in the development of sarcopenia; importantly, diet may regulate this process. This cross-sectional study examined the association of diet-related inflammation with components of sarcopenia. Participants (n = 809) aged 60–95 years from the Geelong Osteoporosis Study were studied. Body composition was measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. In this study, low appendicular lean mass (ALM/height2, kg/m2) was defined as T-score < −1 and low muscle function as Timed-Up-and-Go >10 s over 3 m (TUG > 10). Dietary inflammatory index (DII®) scores, based on specific foods and nutrients, were computed using dietary data collected from a …

Background: Three-dimensional (3D) motion analysis is considered the gold standard for evaluating human movement. However, its clinical utility is limited due to cost, operating expertise, and lengthy data processing time. Numerous qualitative scoring systems have been introduced to assess trunk and lower extremity biomechanics during functional tasks. However, the reliability of qualitative scoring systems to evaluate cutting movements is understudied. Purpose/Hypotheses: To assess the inter-rater and intra-rater reliability of the Cutting Alignment Scoring Tool (CAST) among sports medicine providers and to evaluate rater agreement of each component of the CAST. The hypotheses were: 1) there would be good-to-excellent inter-rater and …
The Role Of Social Support During Injury Recovery, Rehabilitation, And Return To Play, Lindsey N. Rehmer
The Role Of Social Support During Injury Recovery, Rehabilitation, And Return To Play, Lindsey N. Rehmer
Honors Theses
Social support is a multidimensional construct (Arvinen-Barrow & Pack, 2013), primarily consisting of three different types of support: emotional support, informational support, and tangible support (Stowe, 2015). While the athletes are the ones who receive and perceive the effectiveness of the social support, those who give the social support can come in a wide variety of people (Yang, et. al., 2010). Previous research on male versus female athletes show very small differences (Stowe, 2015). Social support is key during the returning to competition phase following an injury (Fernandes, et al, 2014). Despite previous research in the field, there remain limitations …

Type 2 diabetes mellitus has become a serious medical challenge of the 21st century with a dramatic surge in diabetes cases since the last decade. It accounts for 90-95% of all cases of diabetes mellitus. The interplay between insulin resistance and beta cells dysfunction plays a crucial role in the pathophysiology of diabetes mellitus. Type 2 diabetes mellitus is characterized by peripheral insulin resistance in skeletal muscles that leads to a constellation of metabolic disorders, and exhaustion of pancreatic beta cells to maintain euglycemia. The inability of pancreatic beta cells to compensate insulin demand in an insulin-resistant state, result in …
The Absence Or Misuse Of Statistics In Forensic Science As A Contributor To Wrongful Convictions: From Pattern Matching To Medical Opinions About Child Abuse, Keith A. Findley
The Absence Or Misuse Of Statistics In Forensic Science As A Contributor To Wrongful Convictions: From Pattern Matching To Medical Opinions About Child Abuse, Keith A. Findley
Dickinson Law Review (2017-Present)
The new scrutiny that has been applied to the forensic sciences since the emergence of DNA profiling as the gold standard three decades ago has identified numerous concerns about the absence of a solid scientific footing for most disciplines. This article examines one of the lesser-considered problems that afflicts virtually all of the pattern-matching (or “individualization”) disciplines (largely apart from DNA), and even undermines the validity of other forensic disciplines like forensic pathology and medical determinations about child abuse, particularly Shaken Baby Syndrome/Abusive Head Trauma (SBS/AHT). That problem is the absence or misuse of statistics. This article begins by applying …

To Implement Or Not To Implement: Safe Opioid Injection Sites As A Solution To The Opioid Crisis, Kayla Keister
To Implement Or Not To Implement: Safe Opioid Injection Sites As A Solution To The Opioid Crisis, Kayla Keister
Senior Honors Theses
The opioid epidemic has been a crisis in the United States for the last 30-40 years but is just now being popularized by the American public. One potential up-and-coming solution to the opioid crisis is the implementation of safe opioid injection sites, which are locations where individuals may bring drugs to inject under the supervised care of medical professionals. They are currently being used in Canada as well as several Western European countries. The question remains, however, as to whether or not the United States is ready for the implementation sites in regard to public opinion, finances, and ethics.
Vaccine Hesitancy & Study Of Attitudes And Barriers Towards The Influenza Vaccine In Public Health Students At Liberty University, Mikayla Zook
Senior Honors Theses
Every year 2.5 million deaths worldwide are prevented because of vaccinations. Vaccine hesitancy is defined as delayed acceptance or refusal of vaccination and is a global threat to public health. Attitudes and barriers towards vaccines vary and change from group to group. Eighty-five percent of surveyed public health students at Liberty University did not receive the seasonal influenza vaccine. Their attitudes and barriers included: “I did not have time to receive a flu vaccination”, “I believe that as a result of the flu shot, I may actually get the flu”, and “I do not believe I am in danger of …

MEDI 9331 Scholarly Activities Clinical Years
There is a paucity of data regarding the clinical correlation of obesity and cirrhosis in a predominantly Hispanic population. Additionally, data is limited on the contribution of BMI to the incidence of liver cirrhosis in Hispanics in South Texas. The aim of this study is to assess the prevalence of liver cirrhosis and compare the prevalence between Hispanic and Non-Hispanics. In addition, these researchers seek to investigate the prevalence of liver cirrhosis stratified by body mass index. These researchers hypothesize that the prevalence of liver cirrhosis is higher amongst Hispanics than Non-Hispanics individuals, and that higher body mass index scores …

Translating Assessments Into Practice Using Principles Of Patient-Centered Measurement: An Exemplar Using The Coma Recovery Scale-Revised, Jennifer Ann Craft Weaver
Doctor of Philosophy in Translational Health Sciences Dissertations
Background: Disorders of consciousness (DoC) include different states (e.g., comatose, vegetative state/unresponsive wakefulness syndrome, minimally conscious state (MCS), and emerging minimally conscious state (eMCS)) following a severe brain injury. Yet, effective communication about treatment of patients with DoC is often inhibited because family caregivers and rehabilitation practitioners do not interpret recovery of consciousness in the same way (Epstein & Street, 2007; Weaver et al., 2018). Because a person may remain in a disordered state of consciousness for as long as two decades and receive multiple episodes of rehabilitation during that time, ensuring clear communication among family caregivers and rehabilitation practitioners …

Oxidative Stress And Dna Damage As Promoting Factors Of Hpv Integration, Meghri Katerji
Oxidative Stress And Dna Damage As Promoting Factors Of Hpv Integration, Meghri Katerji
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Human papillomaviruses (HPVs) cause virtually all cervical cancer cases and are also associated with other types of anogenital and oropharyngeal cancers. HPV-mediated carcinogenesis typically begins with the HPV episome integrating into the human genome. Unfortunately, the factors that promote this key process are not well defined. Since viral integration requires breaks in both viral and human genomes, DNA damage is likely a key determinant. The latter is primarily caused by an overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Therefore, high levels of background ROS in host cells, which may result from genetic/epigenetic factors together with exogenous influences, in principle, have the …

mRNA vaccines for the prevention of infection disease have gained significant traction in the last three decades, specifically with the recent emergency approval of two COVID-19 vaccines (Oliver, Sara E et al., 2020; Rauch et al., 2018a). mRNA vaccines occupy a unique space in immunology because of their utilization of cellular mechanisms to produce viral proteins, and their simplicity and ease of manufacture (Cullis & Hope, 2017). These vaccines have shown strong humoral and cell-mediated adaptive immune responses (Rauch et al., 2018b) . In addition, side effects of the vaccines have been limited and subject response is manipulatable by varying …

Methamphetamine-Induced Changes In Myocardial Gene Transcription Are Sex-Dependent, Hasitha Chavva, Daniel A. Brazeau, James Denvir, Donald A. Primerano, Jun Fan, Sarah L. Seeley, Boyd R. Rorabaugh
Pharmaceutical Science and Research
Background: Prior work demonstrated that female rats (but not their male littermates) exposed to methamphetamine become hypersensitive to myocardial ischemic injury. Importantly, this sex-dependent effect persists following 30 days of subsequent abstinence from the drug, suggesting that it may be mediated by long term changes in gene expression that are not rapidly reversed following discontinuation of methamphetamine use. The goal of the present study was to determine whether methamphetamine induces sex-dependent changes in myocardial gene expression and whether these changes persist following subsequent abstinence from methamphetamine.
Results: Methamphetamine induced changes in the myocardial transcriptome were significantly greater in female hearts …

Counselor Burnout: An Agency Response Manual, Kaitlin Doyle
Counselor Burnout: An Agency Response Manual, Kaitlin Doyle
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
Burnout in the clinical mental health counseling field impacts client outcomes in addition to counselor performance and quality of life. Community mental health agencies are particularly affected by burnout due to unique demands placed on both the agency and the individual counselors, and this can lead to problematic financial and ethical consequences. Internal and external factors contribute to burnout, and likewise both internal and external interventions can be effective in reducing and preventing burnout. This project includes a literature review of interventions for burnout in the counselor population, and a comprehensive manual for community mental health agency administrators to utilize.
