Synthesis And Characterization Of Antiviral Drug Candidate Molecules Against The Respiratory Syncytial Virus, Ali Abbas Sabi Apr 2021

Synthesis And Characterization Of Antiviral Drug Candidate Molecules Against The Respiratory Syncytial Virus, Ali Abbas Sabi

Dissertations

Abstract

Pyrrole-imidazole polyamides (PAs) are small molecules that typically develop H-bonds to bind to the minor groove of DNA. PAs are of interest because they can be designed to recognize DNA sequences. PAs have numerous biomedical applications in areas like regulation of gene expression and antimicrobial activity. Specifically, polyamide UMSL1011 (a polyamide synthesized in Dr. Bashkin's lab) inhibits replicating vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) by binding the viral RNA inside the nucleocapsid, as indicated by research at Professor Ming Luo's lab at Georgia State University. However, some reports have revealed that polyamides have a low affinity for “simple” double-stranded RNA. Nevertheless, …

Child trafficking has been reported in all 50 states and affects more than 2 million children each year (Guardian Group, 2021). Involvement in human trafficking at a young age induces trauma that has a lasting effect on the victim’s personality and coping skills. A review of literature confirmed a need for more support of the use of occupational therapy with sex trafficking survivors. Despite support for the implementation of occupational therapy in similar trauma populations like domestic violence, homelessness, post-traumatic stress disorder, and disaster survivors, there is limited literature supporting the use of OT with human trafficking survivors (Gorman & …

Self-Reliance And Self-Efficacy As Determinants Of Mental Health Treatment Seeking Intention In A Sample Of Student Service Members/Veterans, Leigh Holdsambeck

DNP Projects

Problem Statement: High rates of mental illness and poor treatment seeking have plagued the military for decades. As an organization that demands resilience, sacrifice, strength, and courage from its members, many servicemembers develop deep-seated self-reliance and self-efficacy. Though essential in many critical situations, these traits often complicate a servicemember's willingness to seek care for a mental health concern. Student servicemembers/veterans (SSM/Vs) are at an increased risk for poor mental health outcomes owing to the compounded stressors of military service and academia. Purpose: To measure the impact of elements of military service, namely self-reliance and self-efficacy, on mental health …

The Influence Of Axial Myopia On Optic Disc Characteristics Of Glaucoma Eyes., Jasmin Rezapour, Christopher Bowd, Jade Dohleman, Akram Belghith, James A Proudfoot, Mark Christopher, Leslie Hyman, Jost B Jonas, Massimo A Fazio, Robert N Weinreb, Linda M Zangwill

Wills Eye Hospital Papers

This study characterizes differences in glaucomatous eyes with and without high axial myopia using custom automated analysis of OCT images. 452 eyes of 277 glaucoma patients were stratified into non (n = 145 eyes), mild (n = 214 eyes), and high axial myopia (axial length (AL) > 26 mm, n = 93 eyes). Optic disc ovality index, tilt and rotation angle of Bruch´s membrane opening (BMO) and peripapillary choroidal thickness (PCT) were calculated using automated and deep learning strategies. High myopic optic discs were more oval and had larger BMO tilt than mild and non-myopic discs (both p < 0.001). Mean PCT was thinnest in high myopic eyes followed by mild and non-myopic eyes (p < 0.001). BMO rotation angle, global retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness and BMO-minimum rim width (MRW) were similar among groups. Temporal RNFL was thicker and supranasal BMO-MRW was thinner in high myopic eyes. BMO tilt and PCT showed moderate and temporal RNFL and nasal BMO-MRW showed weak but significant associations with AL in multivariable analyses (all p < 0.05). Large BMO tilt angle and thin PCT are characteristics of highly myopic discs and were not associated with severity of glaucoma. Caution should be exercised when using sectoral BMO-MRW and RNFL thickness for glaucoma management decisions in myopic eyes.

Bone Quality In Ckd Patients: Current Concepts And Future Directions – Part I, Kamyar Asadipooya, Mohamed Abdalbary, Yahya Ahmad, Elijah Kakani, Marie-Claude Monier-Faugere, Amr El-Husseini

Internal Medicine Faculty Publications

Background: There is ample evidence that patients with CKD have an increased risk of osteoporotic fractures. Bone fragility is not only influenced by low bone volume and mass but also by poor microarchitecture and tissue quality. More emphasis has been given to the quantitative rather than qualitative assessment of bone health, both in general population and CKD patients. Although bone mineral density (BMD) is a very useful clinical tool in assessing bone strength, it may underestimate the fracture risk in CKD patients. Serum and urinary bone biomarkers have been found to be reflective of bone activities and predictive of fractures …

Cyclin G2, A Novel Target Of Sulindac To Inhibit Cell Cycle Progression In Colorectal Cancer, Hongyou Zhao, Bin Yi, Zhipin Liang, Ches'nique N. Phillips, Hui Yi Lin, Adam I. Riker, Yaguang Xi

School of Medicine Faculty Publications

Sulindac has shown significant clinical benefit in preventing colorectal cancer progression, but its mechanism of action has not been fully elucidated. We have found that sulindac sulfide (SS) is able to inhibit cell cycle progression in human colorectal cancer cells, particularly through G1 arrest. To understand the underlying mechanisms of sulindac inhibitory activity, we have demonstrated that Cyclin G2 up-regulation upon SS treatment can substantially delay cell cycle progression by enhancing the transcriptional activity of FOXO3a in human colorectal tumor cells. MiR-182, an oncogenic microRNA known to inhibit FOXO3a gene expression, is also involved in the suppressive effect of SS …
