hnRNP-U deficiency is caused by pathogenic variants in HNRNPU, which encodes the heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein U (HNRNPU), a highly conserved protein responsible for assisting spliceosomes in mediating transcription and alternative splicing activity. HnRNPs are responsible for the regulation of translation at the presynaptic sites as well as the transportation of stabilized mRNAs along the axonal cytoskeleton. Here, we report a 2-year-old-male with a HNRNPU variant with a new presentation of apparent recurrent apneic spells with an underlying epileptic origin. These were described as apnea followed by desaturation and tachycardia in the 180's-200 range prior to resolution of symptoms. He also …

Child Health Research Institute Pediatric Research Forum
Background/Purpose: Cholesterol homeostasis is vital for synaptogenesis and myelination during fetal and neonatal brain development. Both brain and plasma sterol levels have been shown to be associated with outcomes in adult stroke, and animal studies have suggested brain and plasma sterol changes in neonatal hypoxic-ischemic brain injury. MicroRNA-335 (miR-335) has been associated with brain sterol metabolism and our preliminary data showed that sterol metabolism is dysregulated in the brain after hypoxic-ischemic injury in a mouse model. This study sought to describe the effect of oxygen-glucose deprivation in vitro on individual brain cell populations and to validate the associations between sterol …

Introduction: The novel SARs-CoV2 coronavirus has infected approximately 30,000,000 people in the USA. To date, approximately 146 million doses of SARs-CoV2 vaccines have been administered. Perceptions of rapid vaccine development have resulted in reported vaccine hesitancy and refusal. Though not currently FDA approved for use in pediatric populations, but pediatric vaccination may contribute to herd immunity. Previous study demonstrates that physician recommendations significantly impact perceptions of routine pediatric immunizations among parents. Given this historical data, this study aimed to describe the strength of recommendation by pediatricians for the SARs-CoV2 vaccine for pediatric patients and their parents.

Child Health Research Institute Pediatric Research Forum
Background
Clinical documentation is an essential skill for practicing physicians, yet many medical students are not prepared for documentation required during residency.1,2 CMS rule changes now allow medical students’ notes to be used for billing.3 Residents are often the primary authors of notes and provide medical student supervision and instruction. However, little is known about how the use of medical student notes in patient documentation would impact residents. We utilized Constructivist Learning Theory to frame our work, where students construct their knowledge as residents and subsequently faculty facilitate the process.4
Objectives

Identification Of Transcription Regulators Of The Algz/R Two-Components Regulatory System In Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Kwasi Yeboah
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen that express a plethora of virulence components controlled through two-component regulatory systems that allow for sensing and responding to environmental stimuli. This study was aimed at identifying transcription regulators of algZ that encodes the histidine sensor kinase (AlgZ) of the AlgZR two-component regulatory system. To understand how the algZ gene is transcriptionally controlled, transposon mutagenesis was used to create a mutant library with varying algZ expression based on their b-Galactosidase activity. The gene PA3327 was identified as a potential regulator of algZ expression using arbitrary PCR. This gene encodes a probable non-ribosomal peptide synthetase …

Investigating Bmp7 Expression In Glioblastoma Multiforme, Yajaira Janett Macias
Theses and Dissertations
The PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway regulates important cell processes such as growth, survival, motility, inflammation, proliferation, and apoptosis. In Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway is aberrant as it is almost always active. This results in the deregulation of downstream molecules and ultimately leads to cancer progression and maintenance in GBM tumors. In this study, we used RNA-sequencing to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in U87MG GBM cells treated with NVP-BEZ235, a dual inhibitory drug targeting PI3K and mTOR. A total of 7,803 differentially expressed genes were identified via RNA-seq. GEPIA2 online tool was used to assess differential gene expression …

Emotion Regulation Among Adults With Asthma: Links With Short-Acting Inhaler Medication Overuse And Utilization Of Acute Medical Care, Victoria A. Green
Honors Theses
Effective control of asthma symptoms requires daily self-management activities, including use of short-acting or “rescue” inhaled medications. Overuse of short-acting inhaled medications, such as albuterol, can have negative side-effects, including respiratory infections and worse asthma symptom control. Existing research suggests that emotion plays an important role in airway inflammation and asthma symptom control. The objective of this study was to determine whether difficulties regulating emotion was associated with overuse of short-acting inhaled medications and acute medical care usage in adults with asthma. The sample included 401 adults with asthma recruited from an online panel of adults with chronic respiratory disease. …
Implementation Evaluation Of Blood Flow Restriction In The Clinical Setting, Madison Mccall
Implementation Evaluation Of Blood Flow Restriction In The Clinical Setting, Madison Mccall
Honors Theses
Blood flow restriction (BFR) refers to a relatively new training/rehabilitation method consisting of a tourniquet system applied to a limb to partially inhibit blood flow to the muscles distal to the tourniquet. Though much research has been conducted concerning its use, there is little information addressing why clinicians may or may not implement it. Diffusion of Innovation (DOI) theory explains how a product or idea can spread to specific population groups, ending in adoption of it. The Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) consists of a set of constructs which can be used to determine the specific factors involved in …

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most prevalent cancer worldwide with a 5% lifetime incidence in developed countries. It is third most common cause of cancer related death in the United States and the second deadliest when men and women are combined. Encouragingly due to changes in dietary lifestyle, screening colonoscopy, and advancement in treatments the mortality has decreased in recent years. Most sporadic CRCs develop from polyploid adenomas and are preceded by intramucosal carcinomas (stage 0), which can progress into more malignant forms. This developmental process is known as the adenoma-carcinoma sequence. Early detection and endoscopic removal are …
Delineating The Upc2a Regulon In Candida Glabrata, Yu Li
Delineating The Upc2a Regulon In Candida Glabrata, Yu Li
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
Candida glabrata is the second most common cause of invasive candidiasis. Intrinsic resistance has greatly limited the utility of the triazole antifungal, fluconazole, in the treatment of invasive fungal infection. The transcription factor Upc2 regulates the expression of sterol biosynthesis genes in yeast. Disrupting UPC2A in C. glabrata greatly increases its susceptibility to fluconazole (FLU) in both FLU-susceptible and -resistant clinical isolates. Therefore, the Upc2A and its target genes represent a potential pathway for overcoming FLU resistance in C. glabrata. We aimed to delineate the Upc2A regulon to determine its target genes involved in FLU resistance. Transcriptome sequencing (RNA-seq) analysis …
