Clostridioides Difficile Infection Rates And Diabetes Mellitus In The Acute Care Hospital Setting: A Pilot Retrospective Study, Abigail Howe
Clostridioides Difficile Infection Rates And Diabetes Mellitus In The Acute Care Hospital Setting: A Pilot Retrospective Study, Abigail Howe
Honors College
Clostridioides difficile infections (CDI) are bacterial infections severely affecting an individual’s health and financially affecting health care settings. These infections are a persistent health care issue despite implementation of preventative measures. Research on the risk of acquiring CDI for individuals with comorbidities is scarce. Diabetes mellitus (DM) may negatively impact an individual’s immune system and consequently increase the risk of CDI. The purpose of this pilot study was to determine if the incidence of DM differed between patients who had CDI and patients who did not have CDI. After receiving an Internal Review Board (IRB) exempt status, electronic medical records …

Impacts Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On Black Americans With Diabetes, Ted Studt
Impacts Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On Black Americans With Diabetes, Ted Studt
Biology Summer Fellows
The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted all Americans in varying ways, but it has hit the American Black population particularly hard. It also impacts immunocompromised individuals, especially those with conditions that involve damage to or hindering of the cardiovascular or respiratory systems. I found myself asking several questions – how much did this affect individuals who suffer from such conditions, especially those who are Black Americans; how much does systemic racism play in the current pandemic; what could be done about all this; and so on. Since I myself have lived with type I diabetes for almost two decades at the …
Redox Signaling In The Zebrafish Embryo And Implications For Endocrine Pancreas Morphogenesis, Archit Rastogi
Redox Signaling In The Zebrafish Embryo And Implications For Endocrine Pancreas Morphogenesis, Archit Rastogi
Doctoral Dissertations
The glutathione (GSH) system evolved to combat oxygen toxicity in nearly all living organisms, and serves as the predominant cellular redox buffer in vertebrates. This dissertation explores the roles of GSH during embryogenesis using the zebrafish (Danio rerio). The first agnostic in vivo characterization of GSH utilization in the embryo revealed strict spatiotemporal GSH profiles in developing organ systems. Interruption of these GSH profiles by exogenous xenobiotics led to organ specific adverse developmental outcomes; pancreatic β-cells were found to be especially susceptible and developed atypical morphologies following redox active xenobiotic exposures. Pancreatic β-cells lacked expression of Nrf2a (Nuclear …

The current COVID-19 pandemic is the most disruptive event in the past 50 years, with a global impact on health care and world economies. It is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), a coronavirus that uses angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) as an entry point to the cells. ACE2 is a transmembrane carboxypeptidase and member of the renin-angiotensin system. This mini-review summarizes the main findings regarding ACE2 expression and function in endocrine tissues. We discuss rapidly evolving knowledge on the potential role of ACE2 and SARS coronaviruses in endocrinology and the development of diabetes mellitus, hypogonadism, and pituitary and …

Regulation Of Glucagon Secretion And Trafficking By Proteins In The Glucagon Interactome, Farzad Asadi Jomnani
Regulation Of Glucagon Secretion And Trafficking By Proteins In The Glucagon Interactome, Farzad Asadi Jomnani
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Patients with diabetes exhibit hyperglucagonemia, or excess glucagon secretion. The glucagonocentric hypothesis of diabetes states that hyperglucagonemia, rather than hypoinsulinemia, may be the underlying mechanism of hyperglycemia of diabetes. Thus, uncovering mechanisms that regulate glucagon secretion from pancreatic α-cells is crucial for developing treatments for hyperglycemia. One clue to the regulation of glucagon secretion may lie in the proteins that interact with glucagon in α-cell’s secretory pathway, primarily within the secretory granule. The purpose of my work was to identify proteins that interact with glucagon within the secretory granule and characterize a candidate protein within this network that regulates the …

Trichosporon Species And Fusarium Species As A Cause Of Empyema Thoracis In A Diabetic Patient, Nousheen Iqbal, Muhammad Ammar, Muhammad Irfan, Kauser Jabeen
Section of Pulmonary & Critical Care
Of late, fungal infections are increasingly being recognized in diabetic patients. Here we present a case of polymicrobial fungal empyema due to Trichosporon species and Fusarium species developed after community-acquired pneumonia in a diabetic patient. Trichosporon species are basidiomycetous yeast and Fusarium species are soil saprophytes with a worldwide distribution. Fungal empyema cases are rare and are mostly caused by Aspergillus and Candida species. Polymicrobial fungal empyema with Trichosporon species and Fusarium species has not been reported previously. Our patient was successfully treated with antifungal therapy. This case highlights that fungal empyema should be considered in diabetic patients especially if …

Assessment Of Prediabetes Testing Practices Among Primary Care Providers In Mississippi, Blake Mccaulley, Marlana Mcfarland, Erica Mosley, Yvette Munn, Lindsay Wynne
MSN Research Projects
Prediabetes is a condition in which a person has impaired glucose metabolism; however, his or her glucose levels do not meet criteria for the diagnosis of diabetes (ADA, 2019). Prediabetes is associated with an increased risk of developing diabetes and cardiovascular disease (ADA, 2019). Early diagnosis and treatment of prediabetes, including lifestyle interventions and medical management, are vital in preventing prediabetes from progressing to diabetes. The review of current literature indicates that prediabetes testing is not being properly utilized in primary care settings. The purpose of this study was to determine if primary care providers (PCPs) were performing prediabetes A1C …

Hyperosmolar Hyperglycemic State, Justin Momeyer
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
Hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state (HHS) and diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) are dangerous complications of diabetes. HHS is examined in this poster and compared to DKA. Even though both have some similarities, they have very different laboratory profiles, patient presentations, treatments, complications, and can require different levels of care. With diabetes becoming more common amongst patients in the hospital, it is imperative that healthcare providers are aware of both of these complications. Nurses who understand both of these complications are able to act pro-actively for their patients, ask questions regarding correct treatments and orders, include the right providers in the care team, and …

Extracellular Matrix Components Isolated From Diabetic Mice Alter Cardiac Fibroblast Function Through The Age/Rage Signaling Cascade, Stephanie D. Burr, James A. Stewart
Faculty and Student Publications
© 2020 The Authors Individuals suffering from diabetes have an increased risk of developing cardiovascular complications such as heart failure. Heart failure can be a result of the stiffening of the left ventricle, which occurs when cardiac fibroblasts become “active” and begin to remodel the extracellular matrix (ECM). Fibroblast “activation” can be triggered by the AGE/RAGE signaling cascade. Advanced Glycation End products (AGEs) are produced and accumulate in the ECM over time in a healthy individual, but under hyperglycemic conditions, this process is accelerated. In this study, we investigated how the presence of AGEs in either non-diabetic or diabetic ECM …

Adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus tend to exhibit an increased level of central adiposity, augmenting their risk of further non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Importantly, consistent evidence demonstrates a significant, negative association between cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and waist circumference (WC). However, no previous studies have investigated differences in these CRF-related reductions in WC between adults with and without diabetes.
This study used data from the Aerobic Center for Longitudinal Studies, conducted between 1970 and 2006 among predominately Non-Hispanic White, middle-to-upper class adults in Texas. Quantile regression models were used to estimate CRF-related differences in WC between persons with and without diabetes. …

Determining The Link Between Advanced Glycation Endproducts (Ages), Feeding, And Metabolism, Lauren Wimer
Determining The Link Between Advanced Glycation Endproducts (Ages), Feeding, And Metabolism, Lauren Wimer
Natural Sciences and Mathematics | Biological Sciences Master's Theses
Reactive a-dicarbonyls (a-DC’s), such as methylglyoxal (MGO), are unavoidable metabolites generated during glycolysis that accumulate with age and have been linked with chronic age-related metabolic diseases such as Diabetes Mellitus. Diabetes Mellitus is generally characterized by peripheral neuropathy and sustained hyperglycemia. Chronic hyperglycemia leads to an increase in glycolysis and a downstream increase in reactive a-DC’s. The human body has a natural method of detoxifying these a-DC’s. Glycolytic cells have enzymes which can detoxify a-DC’s, but if overwhelmed, a-DC’s can accumulate and react non-enzymatically with proteins, lipids and DNA to yield a group of molecules called advanced glycation end-products (AGEs). …

Baseline Health Assessment Of A Rural Delta Community, Sydney Mitchell
Baseline Health Assessment Of A Rural Delta Community, Sydney Mitchell
Honors Theses
The Lower Mississippi Delta is characterized by poverty, chronic health issues, health disparities, and food insecurity. The rural Delta communities are primarily African American, experiencing disproportionately higher rates of poverty, job loss, and chronic health problems. Historically, chronic health issues have persisted in these areas over time, including obesity, hypertension, and diabetes, which have only seemed to increase in this region. The food environment in this rural region tends to assist in the creation of the largely obesogenic population which, in turn, contributes to the increased prevalence of diabetes and hypertension and a lower quality of life. Many residents in …
