Confirmatory Factor Analysis And Reliability Of The Diabetes Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire (Dtsq) For Arabic Speaking Patients With Type Ii Diabetes, Diana Arabiat, Lisa Whitehead, Buthina Abu Sheikh, Ebenezer Afrifa-Yamoah
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Background: Treatment satisfaction is an important indicator for treatment compliance and glycemic control. Although psychometric properties of the Diabetes Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire have been confirmed in several languages, it remains unclear the extent to which the factorial structure of this tool is valid for Arabic speaking populations.
Purpose: This study set out to confirm the construct validity of the Arabic version of the Diabetes Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire (DTSQ) by investigating the fit of published factor structures and the reliability of responses in patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
Methods: Data were from a large cross-sectional study of 1002 patients with …

Diabetes Locus Of Control And Depression In Older Adults With Type 1 And Type 2 Diabetes: The Study Of Longevity In Diabetes, Jahvona Pretty
Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)
Abstract:
Objective: To determine if diabetes locus of control (dLOC) is associated with depression in older adults with type 1 and type 2 diabetes and whether this association differs by diabetes type.
Methods: Data for the current study were obtained from The Study of Longevity in Diabetes (SOLID), a prospective cohort study of aging, and diabetes. SOLID participants aged 60 and older with type 1 diabetes (T1D), type 2 diabetes (T2D), and without diabetes were recruited from members of Kaiser Permanente Northern California (KPNC). For the current study, we excluded all of the participants without diabetes since the primary exposure, …
Barriers To Exercise: Patients With Diabetes In Washington County, Joshua Bruce Taylor
Barriers To Exercise: Patients With Diabetes In Washington County, Joshua Bruce Taylor
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
According to the Vermont Department of Health physical inactivity is one of the three main behaviors that predisposes patients to cancer, heart disease/stroke, lung disease, and type 2 diabetes, which result in over 50 percent of deaths among Vermonters. Washington County has a higher rate of overweight adults than the statewide average, making exercise an important component to healthier living. Barriers to exercise, especially among patients with diabetes, impose serious health ramifications for the residents of Washington County, and avenues must be made available to circumvent these barriers.
Emphasizing Year-Round Physical Activity Of Seniors In Vergennes, Vermont, Carley R. Mulligan
Emphasizing Year-Round Physical Activity Of Seniors In Vergennes, Vermont, Carley R. Mulligan
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
Many senior citizens in the Vergennes community are active in the spring, summer, and fall with various activities, community groups, and walking. However, in the winter with colder temperatures and less sunlight, these activities are difficult to maintain, even more exacerbated by the current Covid-19 pandemic. Encouraging maintenance of physical activity throughout the winter months in Vermont is difficult, but can provide many benefits to these individuals both physically and mentally.
Increasing Awareness Of Added Sugar In The Outpatient Setting, Lauren Bougioukas
Increasing Awareness Of Added Sugar In The Outpatient Setting, Lauren Bougioukas
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
An estimated 80% of Americans consume more than the recommended daily amount of added sugar. Added sugar consumption significantly increases risk for cardiovascular disease mortality, and is associated with body weight, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. In the United States, added sugar consumption contributes to public health costs related to cardiovascular disease ($555 billion spent in 2016) and diabetes ($245 billion spent in 2012). Particularly in New York, nearly 40% of all New York deaths in 2014 could be attributed to cardiovascular disease and 10.5% of New York adults had diabetes in 2017. In addition to added sugar overconsumption, …

The management of blood glucose levels and the avoidance of diabetic hyperglycemia are common objectives of many therapies in the treatment of diabetes. An aryl piperazine compound 3a (RTC1) has been described as a promoter of glucose uptake, in part through a cellular mechanism that involves inhibition of NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase. We report herein the synthesis of 41 derivatives of 3a (RTC1) and a systematic structure-activity-relationship study where a number of compounds were shown to effectively stimulate glucose uptake in vitro and inhibit NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase. The hit compound 3a (RTC1) remained the most efficacious with a 2.57 fold increase in glucose …

Purpose: The purpose of this retrospective, mixed methods study is to examine the relationship between participation in an interdisciplinary diabetes self-management education (DSME) program at an urban primary health care center and patients’ perceived knowledge and skills, as well as clinical markers, on four cohorts of patients over a two-year period. Methods: Participants, mainly African-American females, responded to survey questions including self-care behaviors, perceived knowledge, and self-efficacy. The researchers also reviewed the participants’ clinical records for glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA 1c) and body mass index (BMI) data and compared these to similar patients in the health center who had …
Doctor-Patient Communication: The Experiences Of Black Caribbean Women Patients With Diabetes, Rosanne Paul-Bruno
Doctor-Patient Communication: The Experiences Of Black Caribbean Women Patients With Diabetes, Rosanne Paul-Bruno
Theses and Dissertations
This applied dissertation was designed to examine the verbal and non-verbal communication experiences of Black Caribbean diabetic women patients with their doctors, in order to provide a better understanding of the essential aspects of doctor- patient communication and their experiences as they managed their condition. Black Caribbean women have been disproportionately impacted by medical conditions such as diabetes. It has been a documented fact that minorities experience disparities in the health care system at different levels and doctor-patient communication is no exception. Poor doctor-patient communication has been known to hinder patients’ health outcomes, and therefore warrants such studies to increase …
Lim Transcriptional Complexes That Impact Endocrine Pancreas Development And Function, Maigen Bethea
Lim Transcriptional Complexes That Impact Endocrine Pancreas Development And Function, Maigen Bethea
All ETDs from UAB
The Ldb1:Isl1 LIM transcriptional complex is critical for endocrine pancreas development as well as b-cell terminal differentiation. These complexes have been shown to interact with various proteins to elicit transcriptional regulation in other tissues, yet few interactors have been identified in b-cells. Therefore, the objective of this dissertation was to identify interactors of Ldb1 and Isl1 and assess their contributions to endocrine pancreas development and function. Using a reversible crosslink immunoprecipitation (ReCLIP) and mass spectrometry (MS) strategy to isolate endogenous Ldb1 and/or Isl1 interacting protiens, SSBP3, Rnf20, and Rnf40 (E3 ubiquitin ligases) coregulators were identified. SSBP3 was found to interact …

Impact Of Ncqa Pcmh-Level On Low Income Diabetics In Louisiana, Michael G. Griffin
All ETDs from UAB
While past studies have examined the relationship between safety-net provider sites that are certified as Patient Centered Medical Homes (PCMH) and quality health care outcomes, no previous studies have evaluated the relationship between NCQA PCMH certification levels at primary care sites and quality health care outcomes. NCQA is the largest national certification program for PCMH, and for 10 years was the only national program that offered a tiered level of certification based on provider level of patient engagement and deployed resources. The Donabedian Model, which focuses on structure, process, and outcomes, was used to develop the theoretical framework to address …
