Following publication of our two articles [1, 2], a critique of the methodology of Phenotype-Genotype Many-to-Many Relations Analysis (PGMRA) [1, 3, 4] questioned the validity of our results from the perspective of polygenic risk scores (PRS) [5]. We appreciate the importance of these questions, and here provide a concise discussion of the assumptions and mathematical constraints of both approaches. We thank this commentator and others who have discussed our articles with us for their thoughtful questions and critiques.

Preparing For A Short-Term Volunteer Experience, Beth Sullivan
Occupational Therapy Collection
Occupational Therapy (OT) practitioners who volunteer for short-term medical service trips in developing countries face many challenges, including gaining an appreciation of that country's culture (values, economy, political, and medical systems) and understanding how these factors influence provision of OT services.
As OT practitioners, we "contribute to the global health of society and individuals by enabling the right to engage in meaningful, purposeful occupations" (World Federation of Occupational Therapists, n.d., para 4). The frequency of short-term medical service trips (STMST) undertaken by persons living in high income countries to low income countries is increasing (Sykes, 2014). Despite this fact, systematic …

"Herpes zoster, also known as shingles, is a painful cutaneous eruption that develops following the reactivation of the varicella zoster virus (VZV), the same virus that causes chickenpox.1 About 1 in 3 people in the United States will develop shingles, with an estimated 1 million cases occurring annually. Anyone with a history of chickenpox is at risk for shingles, but the risk increases with age and in patients who are immunocompromised.2"

Purpose: To examine opioid prescription practices, patient use of opioids after laparoscopic cholecystectomy, and patient knowledge about disposal of unused medication.
Design: Mixed methods design with a chart review and structured phone interview.
Methods: Thirty-four patients were interviewed by phone and asked how many opioids were prescribed, how many excess pills they had 6 to 10 days postoperatively, and if they knew how to dispose of them.
Findings: Average number of excess pills ranged from 0 to 42 (mean = 14; SD = 11.7). Nearly half of patients (47%) perceived the prescribed quantity as “too many.” Seventy-one percent of patients …

Recreational Sound Risk For A University Student: Case Study, Michele Wattman, Antony Joseph
Recreational Sound Risk For A University Student: Case Study, Michele Wattman, Antony Joseph
AuD Capstone Projects - Communication Sciences and Disorders
Concern about noise exposure in recreational settings is growing and unsafe levels of sound are frequently being experienced in a variety of non-occupational settings such as pubs, nightclubs, concerts, parties, and fitness classes. Damage to the auditory system may occur with regular participation in these loud activities. A case study was conducted to estimate sound exposure levels and risk associated with common activities. Findings demonstrated that pubs presented a hazardous sound environment, so information about health-oriented behavior is essential to effectively improve hearing conservation awareness for university students. Public awareness and personal hearing protection should be strongly considered to prevent …

Division of Cardiology Posters
As the indications for Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) continue to expand, understanding appropriate patient selection is becoming an area of growing interest. The presence of Liver cirrhosis has been previously proven to increase perioperative morbidity and mortality in patients undergoing general surgical procedures. However, there is limited research articulating clinical outcomes in TAVR patients with known liver disease who are actively undergoing orthotopic liver transplant evaluation (OLT).

Background Food insecurity and violence are two major public health issues facing U.S. women. The link between food insecurity and violence has received little attention, particularly regarding the temporal ordering of events. The present study used data from the Women’s Interagency Human Immunodeficiency Virus Study to investigate the longitudinal association of food insecurity and violence in a cohort of women at risk for or living with HIV.
Methods Study participants completed six assessments from 2013–16 on food insecurity (operationalized as marginal, low, and very low food security) and violence (sexual or physical, and psychological). We used multi-level logistic regression, controlling …

Comparing Family Sharing Behaviors In Brca Carriers With Palb2 Carriers, Joy E. Kechik
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Identifying individuals with hereditary cancer predisposition can improve health outcomes for patients and their family members through early cancer detection and prevention strategies. Prior research about family sharing of genetic test results among those with hereditary breast cancer has overwhelmingly been limited to the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. The present study sought to compare family sharing behaviors in women with pathogenic BRCA variants to women with pathogenic variants in the more recently identified and characterized PALB2 gene. A total of 18 BRCA carriers and 13 PALB2 carriers were interviewed about family sharing practices using a semi-structured guide based on the …

The Role Of Lipoproteins In The Development Of Diabetic Nephropathia In Patients With Diabetes Mellitus Type 2, O. Jabbarov
Central Asian Problems of Modern Science and Education
The purpose of the current study was to find out the correlation and cause effect relationship between LDL cholesterol and nephropathy in diabetic population. Type-2 diabetes mellitus is an increasingly common metabolic abnormality associated with microvascular and macrovascular complications. It is also the most common cause of end stage renal disease (ESRD). Lipoprotein (Lp) is a recently discussed important independent and inheritable risk factor for micro and macrovascular complications and also an independent risk factor for the progression of diabetic nephropathy in DM2 patients with overt proteinuria
