Comparing The Effects Of Mental Workload Between Visual And Auditory Secondary Tasks During Laparoscopy, James P. Corcoran
Comparing The Effects Of Mental Workload Between Visual And Auditory Secondary Tasks During Laparoscopy, James P. Corcoran
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to test Wickens’ Multiple Resource Theory (MRT) by comparing performance and subjective workload on a visual-spatial secondary task with an auditory-spatial analog when paired with visual-spatial laparoscopic primary tasks. Two primary tasks were performed with a laparoscopic box trainer: a high workload task that consisted of transferring rings from one peg to another and a low workload task that consisted of grasping and placing large pencil erasers in a bowl. It was predicted that the visual-spatial secondary task would be more sensitive when paired with the laparoscopic primary task than the auditory analog. Findings …
The Effects Of Supervisory Style And Supervisory Working Alliance On Supervisee Disclosure In Supervision: A Moderated Mediation Analysis, Chi Li
Counseling & Human Services Theses & Dissertations
Supervisee disclosure in supervision is considered as a critical factor influencing the effectiveness of supervision (Spence et al., 2014). Despite previous researchers’ efforts to understand the concept (e.g., Knox, 2015; Yourman & Farber, 1996), a consensus over the definition for what is considered as supervisee disclosure is missing, posing threats to the construct validity of existing supervisee disclosure measures (e.g., Gunn & Pistole, 2012; Mehr, Ladany, & Caskie; 2015). Therefore, based on a summative definition (e.g., Ladany et al., 1996; Hess et al., 2008; Walsh, Gillespie, Greer & Eanes, 2003), Li and Kemer (under review) developed and provided initial validation …
Emergency Departments And Care For Marginalized Populations, Irvin B. Harrell
Emergency Departments And Care For Marginalized Populations, Irvin B. Harrell
Institute for the Humanities Theses
Healthcare providers in emergency departments (EDs) face a daunting daily task: providing health care in a triage setting to a diverse group of patients many with complex medical issues. Many patients rely on ED services out of financial necessity, when their healthcare issues could be better suited for care from a primary care physician. Many of these already vulnerable patients – minorities, those health illiterate, low-income, uninsured and those with language barriers – must also deal with ED overcrowding and staffing conditions. In some cases, patients leave without being seen while others face bed shortages. This study explores healthcare provider …
Design And Manufacture Of An Inertial Cascade Impactor For Industrial Hygiene Purposes, Hector Joel Gortaire
Design And Manufacture Of An Inertial Cascade Impactor For Industrial Hygiene Purposes, Hector Joel Gortaire
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Inertial cascade impactors are devices commonly used for industrial hygiene and pharmaceutical studies. Their main purpose is to separate particulate matter suspended in aerosols according to their sizes, which can vary from over 10 µm to 0.5 µm. Their versatility and ease of operation make them suitable for on-site sampling; however, designing them requires a careful consideration of the different geometric parameters that characterize them.
In this thesis, a 5-stage inertial cascade impactor was designed, modelled, constructed, and tested. The main design parameter was the volumetric flow rate, 40 l/min, which was provided by a vacuum pump. By continuous iterations, …
The Impact Of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstructive Surgery On Neuromotor Function, Cortney Noel Armitano
The Impact Of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstructive Surgery On Neuromotor Function, Cortney Noel Armitano
Rehabilitation Sciences Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this dissertation was to examine the systemic neuromechanical implications in individuals who have had an ACL reconstruction (ACLR) compared to healthy controls. The specific aims addressed were to: 1) examine differences in inter-limb coordination during walking at different speeds, 2) examine differences in trunk, neck and head acceleration during gait, and 3) investigate whether the reaction time responses assessed during stepping are negatively affected by ACLR.
The findings of study 1 revealed that maximal coordination stability was achieved when walking at the person’s preferred gait speed. However, individuals with a previous ACLR exhibited reduced coordination stability between …
Asthma-Related Health Outcomes In New Jersey After A Natural Disaster Event, My Ngoc Thuy Nguyen
Asthma-Related Health Outcomes In New Jersey After A Natural Disaster Event, My Ngoc Thuy Nguyen
Health Services Research Dissertations
The occurrence of a natural disaster event such as a hurricane may further hinder the asthma management of asthmatic individuals. Unmanaged asthma has led to increased work absenteeism, preventable emergency department visits, costly hospitalizations and possibly death in severe cases. To improve asthma management in asthmatic adults in New Jersey (NJ) following a natural disaster event, this study examined whether predisposing, enabling and need factors are predictors for asthma exacerbation and asthma-related health care utilization in New Jersey. A retrospective secondary analysis of New Jersey Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (NJBRFSS) data and New Jersey Asthma Call Back Survey (NJACBS) …

Reshaping Counselor Education: The Identification Of Influential Factors On Multisystemic Therapy, T'Airra C. Belcher
Counseling & Human Services Theses & Dissertations
Multisystemic therapy (MST) is a form of behavioral health treatment for adolescents which has been identified as one of the leading effective forms of treatment for children and adolescents with severe behavioral and mental health disorders. Since its creation, there have been countless studies exploring if this form of treatment works with a different population in a variety of locations. Additionally, there have been studies which determined that MST is just as effective as or even less effective than other treatment modalities. This dissertation explored the specific aspects of MST and what leads to its effectiveness. A meta-analysis and case …
Usefulness Of An Expanded Health Belief Model With Added Constructs (Self-Efficacy And Ecological System Measures) In Modeling Compliance With Healthy Lifestyle Recommendations In Women With A Recent History Of Gestational Diabetes, Phyllis M. Woodson
Health Services Research Dissertations
Problem Statement: Gestational diabetes (GDM) has been reported to affect as many as 18% of all pregnancies in the U.S. This diagnosis is costly and presents health risks to both baby and mother. The main risk to the mother with a history of GDM is her increased risk for diabetes which has been estimated at 35% to 60% in the following 10 to 20 years; more recent studies report a 7 to 8 times occurrence in the following 3 to 6 years. It is recommended that lifestyle efforts of eating healthfully and exercise can reduce this risk
Methods: Subjects (n=153) …

Coronary artery ectasia (CAE) is an uncommon pathology, which is sometimes incidentally found on left heart catheterization (LHC). CAE is occasionally treated with systemic anticoagulation to prevent thrombosis or progression of the clot in the coronary arteries. We present a 63-year-old male with known CAE on warfarin who presented to the hospital with myocardial infarction after a routine colonoscopy for which anticoagulation was held. His myocardial infarction was attributed to a likely coronary thromboembolic event. This case highlights the need for consideration of bridging anticoagulation therapy before and after procedures in patients with CAE to prevent adverse coronary events.

An Investigation Of The Detection Capability Of Pulsed Wave Duplex Doppler Of Low Grade Stenosis Using Ultrasound Contrast Agent Microbubbles – An In-Vitro Study, Jacinta Browne, Deirdre King, Andrew J. Fagan, Deepa Chari, Carmel Moran
Articles
Objective: The objective of the study was to investigate whether clinically used ultrasonic contrast agents improved the accuracy of spectral Doppler ultrasound in the detection of low grade (< 50%) renal artery stenosis. Low grade stenoses in the renal artery are notoriously difficult to reliably detect using Doppler ultrasound due to difficulties such as overlying fat and bowel gas.
Methods: A range of anatomically-realistic renal artery phantoms with varying low degrees of stenosis (0, 30 and 50%) were constructed and peak velocity data was measured from within the pre-stenotic and mid-stenotic regions in each phantom, for both unenhanced and contrast-enhanced spectral Doppler data acquisitions. The effect of a 20mm overlying fat layer on the ultrasound beam distortion and phase aberration, and hence on the measured peak velocity data, was also …

Ribosomal S6 kinase 2 (RSK2), regulated by Ras/Raf/MEKs/ERKs, transmits upstream activation signals to downstream substrates including kinases and transcription and epigenetic factors. We observed that ELK members, including ELK1, 3, and 4, highly interacted with RSK2. We further observed that the RSK2-ELK3 interaction was mediated by N-terminal kinase and linker domains of RSK2, and the D and C domains of ELK3, resulting in the phosphorylation of ELK3. Importantly, RSK2-mediated ELK3 enhanced c-fos promoter activity. Notably, chemical inhibition of RSK2 signaling using kaempferol (a RSK2 inhibitor) or U0126 (a selective MEK inhibitor) suppressed EGF-induced c-fos promoter activity. Moreover, functional deletion of …

Measurements of fasting glucose (FG) or glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) are two clinically approved approaches commonly used to determine glycemia, both of which are influenced by genetic factors. Obtaining accurate measurements of FG or HbA1c is not without its challenges, though. Measuring glycated serum protein (GSP) offers an alternative approach for assessing glycemia. The aim of this study was to estimate the heritability of GSP and GSP expressed as a percentage of total serum albumin (%GA) using a variance component approach and localize genomic regions (QTLs) that harbor genes likely to influence GSP and %GA trait variation in a large …

Processing speed is a psychological construct that refers to the speed with which an individual can perform any cognitive operation. Processing speed correlates strongly with general cognitive ability, declines sharply with age, and is impaired across a number of neurological and psychiatric disorders. Thus, identifying genes that influence processing speed will likely improve understanding of the genetics of intelligence, biological aging, and the etiologies of numerous disorders. Previous genetics studies of processing speed have relied on simple phenotypes (e.g., mean reaction time) derived from single tasks. This strategy assumes, erroneously, that processing speed is a unitary construct. In the present …
Healthcare Provider Influence On Health Behavior Modification In Gestational Diabetics, Denise K. Fryzelka
Healthcare Provider Influence On Health Behavior Modification In Gestational Diabetics, Denise K. Fryzelka
Dissertations (1934 -)
The overall aim was to understand the process of healthcare provider influence by exploring associations between professional influence measures and patient engagement in health behavior modification in women with Gestational Diabetic Mellitus (GDM). An integrative literature review resulted in defining and developing the Healthcare Provider Influence (HPI) conceptual model based on the Integrated Theory of Health Behavior Change and Transformational Leadership theory. HPI is defined as a process wherein a purposeful interpersonal interactive, collaborative, and transformative relationship develops between a patient and a healthcare provider working together toward a specific focus of health behavior modification outcomes. Measures for testing the …
Identifying A History Of Nonfatal Strangulation: What Impacts Screening By Healthcare, Law Enforcement And Advocates?, Jennifer Delwiche
Identifying A History Of Nonfatal Strangulation: What Impacts Screening By Healthcare, Law Enforcement And Advocates?, Jennifer Delwiche
Dissertations (1934 -)
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a pervasive social epidemic in the United States, affecting as many as one in four women in their lifetime (CDC, 2010). Nonfatal strangulation (NFS) is one type of IPV, in which the application of external pressure on the neck of the victim results in interruption of blood or oxygen flow (Shields et al., 2010). Research has indicated that a history of nonfatal strangulation for victims of IPV can indicate an increased risk for worsening violence, medical complications, or death. Despite the identification of increased vulnerability for victims with a history of nonfatal strangulation, there is …

Toward Quality Preceptorship: A Dyad Sudy, Laurie Ann Kunkel-Jordan
Dissertations (1934 -)
Problem: Approximately 70% of newly graduated nurses work in hospital settings, but their turnover rates are high, costly to employers, and due, in part, to lack of satisfaction with job orientation processes. Effective preceptorship is widely regarded as pivotal to newly graduated nurses’ successful transition to the professional nurse role; yet, the critical elements of preceptorship have not been empirically determined. Numerous researchers proffer the preceptor - newly graduated nurse interpersonal relationship as key, but preceptorship research has not been focused on this dyadic interaction. Consequently, its true impact remains unknown. Accordingly, this study addressed the following research question, “Are …

Cytotoxic NK/CD8+ T cells interact with MHC-I ligands on tumor cells through either activating or inhibiting receptors. One of the inhibitory receptors is CD94/NKG2A. The NK/CD8+ T cell cytotoxic capability is lost when tumor-associated human leukocyte antigen, HLA-E, binds the CD94/NKG2A receptor, resulting in tumor progression and reduced survival. Failure of cancer patients to respond to natural killer (NK) cell therapies could be due to HLA-E overexpression in tumor tissues. Preventing the inhibitory receptor-ligand interaction by either receptor- or ligand-specific monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) is an innovative passive immunotherapeutic strategy for cancer. Since receptors and ligands can be monomeric or homo- …
