Information Seeking Behaviour And Risk Practices Among People Living With Hiv/Aids In South-West, Nigeria, Tajudeen Temitayo Adebayo

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

People living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) need to seek information on set of all-encompassing phenomenon which include information on medical and social packages, medication adherence, indicators of improvement, death and well-being among others. But more importantly, they need to seek information about risk practises to reduce the spread of this virus because they are the main reservoir of the HIV virus and main source of transmission. This work explored the common available sources of information seeking processes to PLWHA and some risk reduction topics.

The study adopted a survey research design which was conducted among PLWHA attending outpatient departments from four …

Transitioning From Experienced Nurse To Resident In Blended Cohort Transition-To-Specialty Nurse Residency Programs, Rachael Frija Apr 2019

Transitioning From Experienced Nurse To Resident In Blended Cohort Transition-To-Specialty Nurse Residency Programs, Rachael Frija

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Recommendations from the Institute of Medicine promote nurse residency programs for experienced nurses (EN) transitioning to new areas of specialty. A large non-profit healthcare system in the Southwest implemented three Transition-to-Specialty (TtS) residency programs using a blended cohort approach consisting of graduate nurses (GNs) and ENs. Upon review of program outcomes, ENs reported to have higher attrition rates than their GN counterparts. Given the substantial pecuniary loss related to EN turnover, understanding the ENs’ perspectives to achieve successful role transition to a new area of specialty is critical to a successful program. This qualitative descriptive study sought to describe the …

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

A number of amphiphilic cyclic peptides—[FR]4, [WR]5, and [WK]5—containing hydrophobic and positively-charged amino acids were synthesized by Fmoc/tBu solid-phase peptide methods and evaluated for their efficiency in intracellular delivery of siRNA to triple-negative breast cancer cell lines, MDA-MB-231 and MDA-MB-468, in the presence and absence of 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine (DOPE). Among the peptides, [WR]5, which contains alternate tryptophan (W) and arginine (R) residues, was found to be the most efficient in the delivery of siRNA by improving the delivery by more than 3-fold when compared to other synthesized cyclic peptides that were not efficient. The data also showed that co-formulation of [WR]5 …

Differences In Tsimane Children’S Growth Outcomes And Associated Determinants As Estimated By Who Standards Vs. Within-Population References, Melanie Martin, Aaron Blackwell, Hillard Kaplan, Michael Gurven

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

Anthropometric measures are commonly converted to age stratified z-scores to examine variation in growth outcomes in mixed-age and sex samples. For many study populations, z-scores will differ if calculated from World Health Organization (WHO) growth standards or within-population references. The specific growth reference used may influence statistical estimates of growth outcomes and their determinants, with implications for biological inference. We examined factors associated with growth outcomes in a sample of 152 Tsimane children aged 0–36 months. The Tsimane are a subsistence-scale population in the Bolivian Amazon with high rates of infectious disease and growth faltering. To examine the influence of …

Childhood poverty has been associated with structural and functional alterations in the developing brain. However, poverty does not alter brain development directly, but acts through associated biological or psychosocial risk factors (e.g. malnutrition, family conflict). Yet few studies have investigated risk factors in the context of infant neurodevelopment, and none have done so in low‐resource settings such as Bangladesh, where children are exposed to multiple, severe biological and psychosocial hazards. In this feasibility and pilot study, usable resting‐state fMRI data were acquired in infants from extremely poor (n = 16) and (relatively) more affluent (n = 16) families in Dhaka, …

Chemophobia And The Relation To Names, Justin Crow Apr 2019

Chemophobia And The Relation To Names, Justin Crow

Undergraduate Research Conference

Chemophobia is a recently identified cultural phenomena where people are afraid of chemicals in their lives, whether "chemicals" are in their food, their medicines, vaccinations, and other products. An increasing amount of people have a concern about the risk associated with chemicals in their everyday life. Chemistry professionals find this a bit strange as Chemistry states that all matter is made up of chemicals. Chemistry has many systems of naming and understanding chemicals which can exclude people from understanding the risk or lack thereof attributed to materials that are common in daily life. This effect could be accentuated by educational …

The Relationship Between Objective And Subjective Markers Of Training Stress In Ncaa Division I Women Basketball Players, Casey Pederson, Courtney Elliott, James Hutson Apr 2019

The Relationship Between Objective And Subjective Markers Of Training Stress In Ncaa Division I Women Basketball Players, Casey Pederson, Courtney Elliott, James Hutson

Undergraduate Research Conference

An athlete’s training stress score (TSS) is an objective marker of overall training volume and can be determined by tracking total time spent at specific heart rate (HR) zones. Additionally, an athlete’s power factor (PF) or explosive strength is an important marker of performance and can be measured objectively with power testing equipment. While these measures of training stress and performance are important, a coach with limited resources may not have access to the equipment or expertise to measure these variables. On a subjective level, perceived recovery status (PRS) prior to practice and the rating of perceived exertion (RPE) during …

Adhd Medication: To Medicate Or Not To Medicate?, Alyssa Henderson

Undergraduate Research Conference

Eleven percent of American children are diagnosed with at least one type of ADHD. That is 6.4 million children that are clinically diagnosed with the inability to focus attentively, restlessness, imbalanced mood swings and under-developed social skills. All of these lead to any learning environment being a daily battleground in the children both internally as well as externally. This is caused due to an under-activity in the frontal lobe of the child’s brain, which is responsible for their planning, motivation, social behavior and speech production. The symptoms associated with ADHD are currently being combated with the utilization of stimulants known …

Gastrostomy Tube Complications And Management, Deborah J. Garcia

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

The avoidable complications of clogging and dislodgement of gastrostomy tubes (g-tubes) place a tremendous burden on patients, caregivers, healthcare providers, and the entire medical system. These complications are associated with $130 million in healthcare utilization each year. Insufficient education of patients and personal caregivers regarding the prevention of complications of clogging and dislodgement of g-tubes is identified as a major barrier. Preintervention and postintervention education program models were established, which include a preprocedure clinic visit with education as well as scheduled follow-up phone calls. A chart review and follow-up phone call was used to evaluate the effect of providing consistent …

Faculty Research 2019

The incomplete identification of structural variants (SVs) from whole-genome sequencing data limits studies of human genetic diversity and disease association. Here, we apply a suite of long-read, short-read, strand-specific sequencing technologies, optical mapping, and variant discovery algorithms to comprehensively analyze three trios to define the full spectrum of human genetic variation in a haplotype-resolved manner. We identify 818,054 indel variants (bp) and 27,622 SVs (≥50 bp) per genome. We also discover 156 inversions per genome and 58 of the inversions intersect with the critical regions of recurrent microdeletion and microduplication syndromes. Taken together, our SV callsets represent a three to …

Quality Improvement: Developing A Hospital Program To Reduce Staff Injury Associated With The Care Of The Patient With Dementia, Kimiko Krutz Apr 2019

Quality Improvement: Developing A Hospital Program To Reduce Staff Injury Associated With The Care Of The Patient With Dementia, Kimiko Krutz

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Problem Description

Hospital clinical staff injuries can occur while caring for patients with dementia. Clinician injury is a concern because it can be career-ending for the clinician and costly to the hospital ($80,000) to replace a nurse. A reliable estimate of the numbers of staff injuries by patients does not exist in the academic literature. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) now require hospitals to provide data on clinician injuries related to patient care. This project explored the use of dementia patient-centered care education to increase clinician self-efficacy to ultimately decrease clinician injury.

Application Of Beers Criteria And A Brown Bag Event To Increase Prescribing Safety In Older Adults, Kristen Garza Apr 2019

Application Of Beers Criteria And A Brown Bag Event To Increase Prescribing Safety In Older Adults, Kristen Garza

Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports

With older adults making up about 14.5% of the U.S. population, polypharmacy may be an unintended consequence of adhering to clinical practice guidelines (Kim & Luck Parish, 2017). Effective polypharmacy interventions are needed in the primary care setting to increase prescribing safety and lower the risk of adverse drug events among older adults. The application of the Beers criteria, in conjunction with a brown bag medication reconciliation event, was initiated as focused interventions for a private primary practice without electronic health records. Outcomes included medication reduction, identification of possible inappropriate medication, decrease of medication dosages, and identification of duplicate medication. …

Investigations Of Novel Strategies To Treat Bacterial Infection And Development Of New Reaction Methodology, Shane Philippi Apr 2019

Investigations Of Novel Strategies To Treat Bacterial Infection And Development Of New Reaction Methodology, Shane Philippi

Theses and Dissertations

Quorum Sensing (QS), a form of bacteria communication mediated through chemical signaling, was investigated in the bacterial pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa. QS has the ability to regulate when a bacterial pathogen is infective or benign. LasR is the main regulator in this system and is also the receptor targeted for inhibition. A Structure Activity Relationship was produced for the system along with the binding pocket being explored.

A new reaction methodology was developed inspired by the Haloform reaction. The reaction was optimized based on solvent, stoichiometry, and conditions. Changing the initial electrophile and the reagent nucleophile created the scope of the …

All-Optical Control Of Lead Halide Perovskite Microlasers, Nan Zhang, Yubin Fan, Kaiyang Wang, Zhiyuan Gu, Yuhan Wang, Li Ge, Shumin Xiao, Qinghai Song

Publications and Research

Lead halide perovskites based microlasers have recently shown their potential in nanophotonics. However, up to now, all of the perovskite microlasers are static and cannot be dynamically tuned in use. Herein, we demonstrate a robust mechanism to realize the alloptical control of perovskite microlasers. In lead halide perovskite microrods, deterministic mode switching takes place as the external excitation is increased: the onset of a new lasing mode switches off the initial one via a negative power slope, while the main laser characteristics are well kept. This mode switching is reversible with the excitation and has been explained via cross-gain saturation. …

Effects Of Age And Exercise On Density Of Sympathetic Innervation And Localization With Nerve Growth Factor And Glial Cell Line-Derived Neurotrophic Factor In Vascular Tissue, Kori Mecklenburg

Honors Theses

Hypertension is a condition that affects nearly 75 million people in the United States (Merai et al, 2017). To better understand this mostly idiopathic condition, the role of survival factors on arterial innervation must be understood. Nerve growth factor (NGF) and glial cell-line derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) have been shown to support development and maintenance of the sympathetic nervous system. The aim of this study was to reveal how density of sympathetic innervation changes in mesenteric arteries over time and with six-months of exercise. Additionally, this study aimed to reveal the localization of GDNF and NGF alongside these changes in …

Knight, Brian Kullin, Grace O. Androga, Frederic Barbut, Catherine Eckert, Stuart Johnson, Patrizia Spigaglia, Kazuhiro Tateda, Pei-Jane Tsai, Thomas V. Riley

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Clostridioides difficile (Clostridium difficile) sequence type 11 (ST11) is well established in production animal populations worldwide and contributes considerably to the global burden of C. difficile infection (CDI) in humans. Increasing evidence of shared ancestry and genetic overlap of PCR ribotype 078 (RT078), the most common ST11 sublineage, between human and animal populations suggests that CDI may be a zoonosis. We performed whole-genome sequencing (WGS) on a collection of 207 ST11 and closely related ST258 isolates of human and veterinary/environmental origin, comprising 16 RTs collected from Australia, Asia, Europe, and North America. Core genome single nucleotide variant (SNV) analysis identified …
