Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

EBP training is effective in improving nurses’ knowledge of and attitudes toward EBP, however, it does not consistently result in behavior change (Jackson, 2016; Black, Balneaves, Garossino, Puyat & Qian, 2015). Previous studies support the role of self-efficacy in promotion of EBP implementation (Blackman & Giles, 2017; Ryan, 2016). The purpose of this project is to examine how EBP training provided to nurse residents affects their EBP self-efficacy and outcome expectancy. A convenience sample of nurse residents in two acute care hospital residency programs were surveyed using an instrument found to be valid and reliable by Chang and Crowe (2011) …

Evidence-Based Practice Self-Efficacy And Outcome Expectancy In The Nurse Resident, Amy L. Smith

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Evidence-based practice (EBP) implementation in healthcare has been associated with improved patient outcome, reduction of costs, and increases in nursing job satisfaction (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2015); however, a lack of implementation remains (Melynk, Fine-out Overholt, Gallaher-Ford & Kaplan, 2012). Although EBP training is effective in improving nurses’ knowledge of and attitudes toward EBP, such training does not consistently result in behavior change (Jackson, 2016; Black, Balneaves, Garossino, Puyat & Qian, 2015). The results of previous studies support the role of self-efficacy in the promotion of EBP implementation (Blackman & Giles, 2017; Ryan, 2016). The Institute of Medicine’s Initiative on the …

Poster: Malignant Hyperthermia Preparedness For Labor And Delivery Nurses, Patricia Rabinowitz Apr 2019

Poster: Malignant Hyperthermia Preparedness For Labor And Delivery Nurses, Patricia Rabinowitz

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Malignant Hyperthermia (MH) is a rare, inherited disorder of skeletal muscle triggered by general anesthesia in susceptible individuals. Although MH can occur later in the anesthetic course as well as post-operatively, it most frequently occurs shortly after induction of general anesthesia.

Operating room (OR) nurses receive extensive training in MH crisis management. On labor and delivery (L&D) units, neuraxial (spinal and epidural) blocks are the safest and most commonly used anesthetics during pregnancy. General anesthesia is utilized only when the life of the mother or infant is in jeopardy or when a neuraxial block is not possible. Under these circumstances, …

BACKGROUND:
ADNP syndrome is a rare Mendelian disorder characterized by global developmental delay, intellectual disability, and autism. It is caused by truncating mutations in ADNP, which is involved in chromatin regulation. We hypothesized that the disruption of chromatin regulation might result in specific DNA methylation patterns that could be used in the molecular diagnosis of ADNP syndrome.

RESULTS:
We identified two distinct and partially opposing genomic DNA methylation episignatures in the peripheral blood samples from 22 patients with ADNP syndrome. The "epi-ADNP-1" episignature included ~ 6000 mostly hypomethylated CpGs, and the "epi-ADNP-2" episignature included ~ 1000 predominantly hypermethylated CpGs. The …

Posters

Severe kernicterus spectrum disorder (KSD) is described as motor and auditory deficits resulting from brain damage caused by hyperbilirubinemia. The severity of HB does not always predict the severity of injury. The lack of a strong monogenetic link to susceptibility suggests bilirubin-induced brain damage may be due to impaired bilirubin response pathways. This poster describes work to use a modified pathway genetic load (mPGL) score method to perform a targeted genetic analysis of whole exome data from patients with various degrees of neonatal HB, with an ultimate goal of developing a neonatal screen to susceptibiltiy to bilirubin neurotoxicity.

Behavioral And Neural Correlates Of Normal Aging Effects On Motor Preparatory Mechanisms Of Speech Production And Limb Movement, Karim Johari, Dirk B. Den Ouden, Roozbeh Behroozmand

Communication Sciences and Disorders Faculty Articles and Research

Normal aging is associated with decline of the sensorimotor mechanisms that support movement function in the human brain. In this study, we used behavioral and event-related potential (ERP) recordings to investigate the effects of normal aging on the motor preparatory mechanisms of speech production and limb movement. The experiment involved two groups of older and younger adults who performed randomized speech vowel vocalization and button press motor reaction time tasks in response to temporally predictable and unpredictable visual stimuli. Behavioral results revealed age-related slowness of motor reaction time only during speech production in response to temporally unpredictable stimuli, and this …

Daily Heart Rate Variability Before And After Concussion In An American College Football Player, Andrew A. Flatt, Gary B. Wilkerson, Jeff R. Allen, Clay M. Keith, Michael R. Esco

Health Sciences & Kinesiology: Faculty Publications

This case report demonstrates the effects of sport-related concussion (SRC) on heart rate variability (HRV) in an American college football player. Daily measures of resting, ultra-short natural logarithm of the root mean square of successive differences (LnRMSSD), subjective wellbeing, and Player Load were obtained each training day throughout a 4-week spring camp and 4 weeks of preseason training. SRC occurred within the first 2 weeks of the preseason. During spring camp and preseason pre-SRC, the athlete demonstrated minimal day-to-day fluctuations in LnRMSSD, which increased post-SRC (LnRMSSD coefficient of variation pre-SRC ≤ 3.1%, post-SRC = 5.8%). Moderate decrements in daily-averaged LnRMSSD …

The Patient-Physician Relationship: Overcoming Language And Cultural Barriers, Corrilynn Lynch Apr 2019

The Patient-Physician Relationship: Overcoming Language And Cultural Barriers, Corrilynn Lynch

Senior Honors Theses

The patient-physician relationship governs the field of medicine, forming the basis for all relationships, interactions, and procedures in medicine. The degree to which a patient trusts his physician and thus is willing to be receptive to medical advice and adhere to assigned treatment is dependent on the quality of his relationship with his physician. The method of relationship chosen will dictate how the patient feels he is perceived and thus to what extend he will participate in his healthcare. A patient-centered approach to medicine will increase this confidence and lead to improved clinical results. Additionally, the rise of physician burnout …

Many diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases are actionable, i.e. they are preventable by early intervention. One to two years of early warning would represent a huge advance in dealing with these conditions and could help prevent further complications such as heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, blindness, and amputation. In this project, we are developing an extensible condition forecasting model to assess the risk of diabetes and heart problems in patients in advance. Using TensorFlow, Elastic MapReduce (EMR), and AWS Sagemaker, we are training a Wide and Deep Neural Network on a dataset of more than 170 million electronic …

Synthesis Of A Zn(Ii)-Responsive Paracest Mri Agent For Improved Diagnosis Of Prostate Cancer, Megan Martin, Holly Clancy

Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD

In the United States, prostate cancer is the leading type of cancer diagnosed in men. Prostate cancer is currently diagnosed with the Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) test; however, it leads to many false positives and therefore unneeded biopsies. Previous studies have shown that cancerous prostates have a much lower concentration of zinc than healthy prostates. The goal of this project is to create an MRI contrast agent capable of non-invasively quantifying zinc in the human prostate. Five out of the eight synthetic steps have been successfully completed so far, and the identities of these intermediate products have been verified by 1 …

Impact Of Quinoline Amide Substituents On The Luminescence And Paracest Mri Properties Of Bimodal Europium (Iii) Complexes, Brooke Aloe, Marisa Poveda, Osasere M. Evbuomwan

Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD

Lanthanide ions exhibit optical imaging properties; however, the amount of energy needed to directly excite these ions could potentially be damaging to biological tissue. To overcome this limitation, organic chromophores, such as quinolines, can be used to absorb the excited light and transfer the energy obtained to the attached lanthanide ion. This intramolecular energy transfer results in the sensitization of the lanthanide ion luminescence. The goal of this project is to assess how the amide proton position in relation to the quinoline substituent affects the sensitivity of luminescence and the optical imaging properties of Europium (III) complexes. To achieve this …

Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD

Deep learning algorithms have become widely popular, with considerable success in fields where datasets have hundreds of thousands or million points. As deep learning is increasingly applied to the fields of medical physics and radiation oncology, a reasonable question follows: are these techniques the best approach, given the unique conditions in our field? In this study, we investigate the dependence of dataset size on the performance of deep learning algorithms compared with more traditional radiomics-based methods.

Effect Of Salt Concentration On Electrochemical Detection Of Dna, Ziming Dong, Eddie Madrigal, Ryan West Dr. Apr 2019

Effect Of Salt Concentration On Electrochemical Detection Of Dna, Ziming Dong, Eddie Madrigal, Ryan West Dr.

Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD

Electrochemical approaches for biological sensing offer the potential advantages of facile sample preparation, fast response times, ease of parallel and multiplexed measurements, and the possibility of miniaturization (of sample sizes, electrodes, and associated electronics). All of these factors contribute towards the feasibility of electrochemical methods in biological sensing and analysis. This potential has already been achieved with the commercialization of blood glucose meters, which often rely on an electrochemical transduction mechanism. We have previously demonstrated the ability to electrochemically detect and differentiate complementary and mismatched DNA using our method of melting DNA duplexes at electrified gold surfaces, i.e. e-melting. Recently, …
