Resistance exercise bands are a core component of any physical activity strengthening program. Strength training can mitigate the development of sarcopenia, the loss of muscle mass or strength and function with aging. Yet, the adherence of such behavioral exercise strategies in a home-based setting are fraught with issues of monitoring and compliance. Our group developed a Bluetooth-enabled resistance exercise band capable of transmitting data to an open-source platform. In this work, we developed an application to capture this information in real-time, and conducted three usability studies in two mixed-aged groups of participants (n=6 each) and a group of older adults …

The ultrasonic scalpel instrument was compared with the conventional staphylectomy technique in elongated soft palate surgery in twenty brachycephalic airway obstructive syndrome (BAOS) canines. Patients were randomly divided into the conventional incisional and ultrasonic scalpel group. Operation time (minute), bleeding volume (ml), respiratory distress score, postoperative complications score, pain scores, epithelialization score and inflammatory score were assessed. Two weeks after surgery, soft palates tissues were biopsied from 7 conventional surgery dogs and 8 ultrasonic dissection device applied dogs. The operation time and bleeding volume in the conventional surgery group were significantly higher than that in conventional group (P<0.01 and P<0.001, respectively). In addition, the respiratory distress score was significantly higher in the conventional surgery group compared with the ultrasonic dissection device group on day 3 and day 28 post-operation (P<0.05). There were no significantly different postoperative complication scores, pain scores or inflammatory scores between two groups. The epithelialization score of the UD was significantly higher than that of the conventional group (P<0.05). The ultrasonic dissection device is user friendly, has decreased surgical time, complete hemostasis and provides fewer postoperative complications. The ultrasonic dissection device is recommended in high-risk patients such as those displaying senility, chronic inflammation, or bleeding disorders.

Background: Advancements in sequencing capabilities have enhanced the study of the human microbiome. There are limited studies focused on the gastro-intestinal (gut) microbiome of infants, particularly the impact of diet between breast-fed (BF) versus formula-fed (FF). It is unclear what effect, if any, early feeding has on short- term or long-term composition and function of the gut microbiome.
Results: Using a shotgun metagenomics approach, differences in the gut microbiome between BF (n = 10) and FF (n = 5) infants were detected. A Jaccard distance principle coordinate analysis was able to cluster BF versus FF infants based on the presence …
Identification Of Novel Cyp2e1 Inhibitor To Investigate Cellular And Exosomal Cyp2e1-Mediated Toxicity, Mohammad Arifur Rahman
Identification Of Novel Cyp2e1 Inhibitor To Investigate Cellular And Exosomal Cyp2e1-Mediated Toxicity, Mohammad Arifur Rahman
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
Cytochrome P450 2E1 (CYP2E1)-mediated hepatic and extra-hepatic toxicity is of significant clinical importance. Diallyl sulfide (DAS) has been shown to prevent xenobiotics such as alcohol- (ALC/ETH), acetaminophen- (APAP) induced toxicity and disease (e.g. HIV-1) pathogenesis. DAS imparts its beneficial effect by inhibiting CYP2E1-mediated metabolism of xenobiotics, especially at high concentration. However, DAS also causes toxicity at relatively high dosages and with long exposure times. The objective of the first project was to find potent DAS analogs which can replace DAS as a research tool or as potential adjuvant therapy in CYP2E1-mediated pathologies.

Regulation Of Cyp3a5 In Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma, Jessica D. Hoyer
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
CYP3A5 is a drug metabolism enzyme that is polymorphically expressed in normal tissues and expressed in high amounts in some cancers, including pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). There have been several published studies regarding CYP3A5 regulators, but there is still much to be discovered concerning CYP3A5 regulation in cancer. To further understand the regulation of CYP3A5, a high-throughput screen was performed in the AsPC-1 PDAC cell line. This screen employed small interfering RNA (siRNA) targeting transcription factors and chromatin-associated proteins. We identified siRNA that decreased CYP3A5 mRNA and protein levels in AsPC-1 cells and probed into the potential mechanisms. Taken together, …

Predictions made soon after the introduction of human immunodeficiency virus type-1 (HIV-1) protease inhibitors about potentially eradicating the cellular reservoirs of HIV-1 in infected individuals were too optimistic. The ability of the HIV-1 genome to remain in the chromosomes of resting CD4+ T cells and macrophages without being expressed (HIV-1 latency) has prompted studies to activate the cells in the hopes that the immune system can recognize and clear these cells.
