Advance Practice Pediatric Nursing Council., Emily Mountjoy Mcrae

Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers

Advance Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) continue to grow in numbers in the inpatient hospital setting, as well as within children’s hospitals and subspecialty groups. As the number of APRNs continues to increase, thoughtful consideration within organizations is needed to address leadership specific to this population of healthcare professionals. The goal of this quality improvement initiative was to generate quantitative data to determine if the formation of a Pediatric Advance Practice Nursing Council in a children’s hospital was successful in improving APRN communication, collegiality, and networking. However, the formation of our APRN council was significantly impacted by a multitude of barriers. …

Group Videoconferencing To Reduce Fear Of Falling, A Randomized Non-Inferiority Trial, Alan Vlieg Jun 2019

Group Videoconferencing To Reduce Fear Of Falling, A Randomized Non-Inferiority Trial, Alan Vlieg

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses

A fear of falling has a significant impact on the life of an elderly person. Over half of people over the age of sixty-five admit to a fear of falling, which is an independent risk factor for falling and several other poor health outcomes. Interventions have been successful in reducing fear of falling among participants, however there are significant barriers to participation among an older population. Delivering the intervention at home would reduce several barriers. Teleconferencing has been an effective tool among an elderly population and delivery of an established intervention through videoconferencing has been shown to be comparable to …

Randomized Controlled Trial Examining Ticagrelor Versus Placebo On Coronary Flow Reserve, Sabrina Puvalowski Jun 2019

Randomized Controlled Trial Examining Ticagrelor Versus Placebo On Coronary Flow Reserve, Sabrina Puvalowski

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses

Non-obstructive coronary artery disease is prevalent in the United States and is associated with acute coronary syndrome and heart failure. Despite its prevalence and morbidity, no standard therapy exists for non-obstructive coronary artery disease. The development of non-obstructive coronary artery disease involves coronary microvascular dysfunction, which is primarily driven by endothelial dysfunction. Therefore, exploring therapies to improve endothelial function could benefit patients with coronary microvascular dysfunction. Ticagrelor is a P2Y12 inhibitor that is used for its anti-platelet effects and is also thought to improve endothelial function. Therefore, we propose to investigate the effects of ticagrelor versus placebo on coronary flow …

Use Of Clinical Test Clusters Versus Advanced Imaging Studies In The Management Of Patients With A Suspected Slap Tear, Richard C. Clark, Chasiti C. Chandler, Andrew C. Fuqua, Kelly N. Glymph, Grayson C. Lambert, Katherine J. Rigney

Physical Therapy Faculty Research

Background and Purpose

The Magnetic Resonance Arthrogram (MRA) has served as the gold standard for identifying patients with possible Superior Labrum Anterior-Posterior (SLAP) lesions and are often required by orthopaedic surgeons prior to clinical evaluation. However, as the literature shows MRA sensitivity as 0.65-0.98, and specificity between 0.80-1.00, there is still room for misinterpretation of the imaging study, and potential mismanagement of a patient who may or may not exhibit a true SLAP lesion. It is proposed that by grouping a series of clinical special tests it may be possible to develop greater sensitivity in identifying a SLAP lesion, resulting …

Implementing School-Based Education Programs To Combat Lack Of Access To Psychiatric Facilities In The United States, Marisa L. Sparbanie Jun 2019

Implementing School-Based Education Programs To Combat Lack Of Access To Psychiatric Facilities In The United States, Marisa L. Sparbanie

Kentucky Journal of Undergraduate Scholarship

One in five Americans are diagnosed with a mental illness, yet only 41% of adults received healthcare services in the past year. Due to barriers in accessing care, services are costly, wait times are long, and appointment times are inconvenient. Lack of access to quality, affordable care disproportionately affects those in rural areas and individuals with low socioeconomic status. School-based mental health education programs should be developed as a beginning step to combat increasing mental health conditions and limited access to healthcare facilities. Lack of access to care may lead to occupational injustices such as: occupational alienation, deprivation, and imbalance. …

Healthcare Access Barriers In Rural America, Lakyn E. Jolly Jun 2019

Healthcare Access Barriers In Rural America, Lakyn E. Jolly

Kentucky Journal of Undergraduate Scholarship

  • In rural America, the path to accessing healthcare is met with many challenges. These challenges can present geographically and structurally within rural healthcare systems, as well as larger healthcare delivery entities. Due to these access barriers, rural Americans are at higher risk for developing poor health outcomes, as compared to their urban counterparts. Among these are higher mortality and morbidity rates, higher instances of chronic conditions, and higher rates of childhood obesity. Because rural communities are at risk for adverse health outcomes, it is vital that research and policy be geared toward reducing barriers to accessing healthcare within this population. …

Healthcare Of The Lgbt Community, Hannah N. Vance Jun 2019

Healthcare Of The Lgbt Community, Hannah N. Vance

Kentucky Journal of Undergraduate Scholarship

There are laws and policies that are currently put into place to protect and provide adequate healthcare for LGBT individuals. However, these different laws and policies are not strongly enforced, therefore, members of the LGBT community continue to experience health disparities resulting in a poor quality of life and reduced health outcomes. In order to prevent these discrepancies, it is important that mandatory education for healthcare providers be implemented so beliefs and attitudes can be positively altered to support improved health outcomes. If education for healthcare providers is implemented, and if laws protecting this population are fully enforced, then LGBT …

© Copyright 2019, Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers 2019. The relationship between grip strength and mortality is often used to underscore the importance of resistance exercise in physical activity guidelines. However, grip strength does not appear to appreciably change following traditional resistance training. Thus, grip strength could be considered reflective of strength independent of resistance exercise. If true, grip strength is not necessarily informing us of the importance of resistance exercise as an adult, but potentially highlighting inherent differences between individuals who are stronger at "baseline" compared to their weaker counterpart. The purpose of this article is to discuss: (1) …

Executive Recruitment Triads From An Agency Theory Perspective, Carlos Miguel Baldo, Ramon Valle, Miguel Olivas-Lujan Jun 2019

Executive Recruitment Triads From An Agency Theory Perspective, Carlos Miguel Baldo, Ramon Valle, Miguel Olivas-Lujan

Administrative Issues Journal

The relationships between clients, headhunters, and candidates during the executive search process has not been researched using agency theory as the theoretical framework. This is puzzling, as the existence of common objectives and information asymmetries between these three parties make agency theory an ideal one to explain the interactions between them. We addressed this gap by developing six testable propositions for researchers. Practitioners may also benefit from the study as understanding the human assumptions in the process of executive recruitment may help increase the chances of achieving positive outcomes.

The Accounting Doctoral Shortage: Accounting Faculty Opinions On Hiring Jd-Cpas As Accounting Educators, Ramsey L. Cardwell, Ronald O. Cardwell, J.T. Norris, Michael P. Forrest

Administrative Issues Journal

Objectives: Prior studies have noted that the number of PhDs in accounting are far below the number needed to meet program hiring needs. This paper reviews how the JD-CPA alternative credential is viewed by three academic accreditation bodies (SACS, ACBSP, and AACSB), the American Bar Association (ABA), and current accounting faculty at SACS-accredited institutions of higher education. Methods: An online survey was distributed to accounting educators at 439 institutions accredited by SACS, with 248 complete responses received. Individual demographics and institutional information were summarized statistically. Responses to two questions assessing inclination to hire an otherwise-qualified JD-CPA candidate using …

A Review Of Some Diverse Models Of Summer Bridge Programs For First-Generation And At-Risk College Students, Berverlyn Grace-Odeleye, Jessica Santiago

Administrative Issues Journal

Many colleges are pursuing innovative alternative approaches for the development of education I that aims to accelerate students’ progress in gaining important academic competencies. Summer bridge programs are one such approach. These bridge programs offer underprepared and at-risk students the opportunity to advance toward college-level coursework during the summer before their freshman year. These summer bridge programs have grown increasingly popular, as a strategy for providing students with the foundational college courses, knowledge and skills required for college success. Many integrated programmatic approaches and resources have been developed to address this issue, including general education freshman courses in reading, writing, …

Introducing A Virtual Emergency Operations Center Into A Higher Education Curriculum, Harry Hueston, "Chip" George K. Orton Iii

Administrative Issues Journal

At West Texas A&M University, faculty members in the Criminal Justice and Emergency Management programs teach students how to deal with man-made and natural disasters. These program courses require students to learn about the National Incident Management Systems (NIMS) in addition to passing certain requirements. Each student must pass NIMS courses 100 and 200 as part of their coursework where students are given the opportunity to work through a table-top exercise involving a natural or man-made disaster. Over the past several years, due to the success of these exercises, one of the criminal justice professors proposed a funding project to …

Less Than/More Than: Issues Associated With High-Impact Online Teaching And Learning, Ricardo Montelongo

Administrative Issues Journal

The increased presence of online education in higher education in the United States continues to challenge educators in their perceptions of teaching and learning experiences in virtual environments. While critiques of online education typically focus on its “less than” shortcomings, this literature review encourages educators to take a “more than” approach when providing institutional support. Online education provides beneficial outcomes for faculty, students, and administration when viewed for its potential in providing innovative teaching and learning. The financial challenges involved in providing these practices are addressed to justify investment in faculty effort, organizational support and professional development, and equitable student …
