Gill Heart & Vascular Institute Faculty Publications

Background. Myocardial inflammation following acute ischemic injury has been linked to poor cardiac remodeling and heart failure. Many studies have linked myeloperoxidase (MPO), a neutrophil and inflammatory marker, to cardiac inflammation in the setting of acute coronary syndrome (ACS). However, the prognostic role of MPO for adverse clinical outcomes in ACS patients has not been well established. Methods. MEDLINE and Cochrane databases were searched for studies from 1975 to March 2018 that investigated the prognostic value of serum MPO in ACS patients. Studies which have dichotomized patients into a high MPO group and a low MPO group reported clinical outcomes …

Medications Development For Drug Addiction And Other Neuropsychiatric Disorders, Ariful Islam

Theses and Dissertations

Drug addiction and abuse especially opiate and psychostimulant abuse is a national and global crisis. IBNtxA (3-iodobenzoyl naltrexamine) is a novel mu opioid receptor (MOR) agonist, a naloxone derivative, structurally related to the classical MOR antagonist naltrexone. Recent studies suggest IBNtxA preferentially signals through truncated MOR splice variants, producing a unique pharmacological profile resulting in potent analgesia with reduced side effects. It has been found that M. vaccae has immunoregulatory effects that can prevent stress-induced exaggeration of neuroinflammation in the brain. The purpose of our pilot study is to develop medication for addiction and neuropsychiatric disorders. According to our purpose, …

Introduction: Little is known about ethnic and gender disparities for transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedures in the United States.

Methods: We queried the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) database (2011–2014) to identify patients who underwent TAVR. We described the temporal trends in the uptake of TAVR procedures among various ethnicities and genders.

Results: Our analysis identified 39,253 records; 20,497 (52.2%) were men and 18,756 (47.8%) were women. Among all TAVRs, 87.2% were Caucasians, 3.9% were African Americans (AA), 3.7% were Hispanics, and 5.2% were of other ethnicities. We found a significant rise in the trend of TAVRs in all groups: …

HLA-haploidentical hematopoietic cell transplantation (Haplo-HCT) using posttransplantation cyclophosphamide (PT-Cy) has improved donor availability. However, a matched sibling donor (MSD) is still considered the optimal donor. Using the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research database, we compared outcomes after Haplo-HCT vs MSD in patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in first complete remission (CR1). Data from 1205 adult CR1 AML patients (2008-2015) were analyzed. A total of 336 patients underwent PT-Cy–based Haplo-HCT and 869 underwent MSD using calcineurin inhibitor–based graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) prophylaxis. The Haplo-HCT group included more reduced-intensity conditioning (65% vs 30%) and bone marrow grafts (62% vs …

Near Infrared Gumbos And Nanogumbos For Biomedical Applications, Mi Chen Jun 2019

Near Infrared Gumbos And Nanogumbos For Biomedical Applications, Mi Chen

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Recent advances in development of nanomaterials have provided great opportunities for cancer research. In this dissertation, nanoGUMBOS derived from a group of uniform materials based on organic salts (GUMBOS) were investigated for several biomedical applications including chemotherapy, photothermal therapy (PTT), and drug delivery. GUMBOS are solid-phase organic salts consisting of bulky cations and anions. Similar to ionic liquids, GUMBOS display highly tunable properties with counter-ions variation, but with a defined melting point range of 25–250 °C. Nanomaterials derived from GUMBOS, i.e. nanoGUMBOS, display enhanced properties at the nanoscale level. This dissertation focuses on development of near infrared IR780 nanoGUMBOS for …

A Systematic Review And Analysis Of Racial Differences In Treatment For Depression, Elli D. R. Parisi Jun 2019

A Systematic Review And Analysis Of Racial Differences In Treatment For Depression, Elli D. R. Parisi

DePaul Discoveries

Mental health affects a large proportion of the population across the world. Though many mental health studies exist, they are inconsistent in methodology, conceptualization of terms, and populations studied; as a result, many studies are incomparable with each other. Further, there is arguably too few studies that focus on marginalized or underrepresented populations. The current study aims to address some of this gap in knowledge. The differences in the way depression is diagnosed and treated in various racial and ethnic groups were identified, and the findings of previous studies were analyzed to help improve the way mental health, and specifically …

Behavioral Responses To Gold Nanoparticle Exposure And H2o2-Induced Oxidative Stress In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Rachel Pride, Ashley Wagner

DePaul Discoveries

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have been utilized in many biomedical disciplines, most notably cancer therapy and drug delivery. Recent research suggests that with specific peptide manipulation, AuNPs can deliver drugs across the blood-brain barrier (BBB), allowing for treatment of neurodegeneration and other neurological afflictions. Neurodegeneration has been shown to be caused by oxidative stress. The present experiment aimed to assess the effects of AuNPs on C. elegans behavior that had undergone H2O2-induced oxidative stress. It was predicted that worms exposed to both H2O2 and AuNPs would have higher survival, mechanosensation, and thrashing rates than …

A Life Cycle Assessment Of Jewelry, Jessica Fernandez, Christie Klimas Jun 2019

A Life Cycle Assessment Of Jewelry, Jessica Fernandez, Christie Klimas

DePaul Discoveries

Jewelry is unique in that it is not a necessity, yet it holds sentimental and material value to the owner. Jewelry sales in the US have increased throughout time, meaning the demand for gold has almost always been increasing, as well. With more than half of the gold mined going towards the production of jewelry, it is the product with the highest demand of the resource. However, mining for the metals to produce a piece of jewelry, specifically gold, has negative consequences on both the environment and the people working in or living near mines. This study is a life …

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

"Aging in place" (i.e., living independently in one's home) has become part of the national conversation as the U.S. demographically shifts towards an older population. What is interesting about aging in place is how seniors may end up in this particular situation. For some seniors, it may be their choice to age safely in their home with or without a partner and possibly other family members. For others, aging in place can occur out of necessity as a result of financial burden, lack of family support, or even isolation due to mental health or cognitive issues like dementia (see Brody, …

Microstructure And Fracture Properties Of Semi-Hard Cheese: Differentiating The Effects Of Primary Proteolysis And Calcium Solubilization, Prabin Lamichhane, Prateek Sharma, Deirdre Kennedy, Alan L. Kelly, Jeremiah J. Sheehan

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

The individual roles of hydrolysis of αS1- and β-caseins, and calcium solubilization on the fracture properties of semi-hard cheeses, such as Maasdam and other eye-type cheeses, remain unclear. In this study, the hydrolysis patterns of casein were selectively altered by adding a chymosin inhibitor to the curd/whey mixture during cheese manufacture, by substituting fermentation-produced bovine chymosin (FPBC) with fermentation-produced camel chymosin (FPCC), or by modulating ripening temperature. Moreover, the level of insoluble calcium during ripening was quantified in all cheeses. Addition of a chymosin inhibitor, substitution of FPBC with FPCC, or ripening of cheeses at a consistent low temperature (8 …

Empathy For Provider And Patient, Virginia Jefferies, Jane Lassetter Phd, Rn

Student Works

Nurse Practitioners (NPs) increasingly feel pressure to diagnose and treat patients in shorter timeframes. Simultaneously patients’ satisfaction with care impacts reimbursement from Medicare and Medicaid. Improving empathetic skills can encourage patients to openly communicate leading to more accurate and timely diagnosis and treatment, which improve patient outcomes and satisfaction. Empathetic providers find work more satisfying and experience less depression and increased quality of life. This article presents the benefits of empathy to patients and NPs and offers guidance for incorporating empathy into practice. By implementing the behaviors discussed herein, NPs can develop practical skills that benefit both patient and provider.

Molecular Recognition Of M1-Linked Ubiquitin Chains By Native And Phosphorylated Uban Domains, Lina Herhaus, Henry Van Den Bedem, Sean Teng, Innokentiy Maslennikov, Soichi Wakatsuki, Ivan Dikic, Simin Rahighi

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Although the Ub-binding domain in ABIN proteins and NEMO (UBAN) is highly conserved, UBAN-containing proteins exhibit different Ub-binding properties, resulting in their diverse biological roles. Post-translational modifications further control UBAN domain specificity for poly-Ub chains. However, precisely, how the UBAN domain structurally confers such functional diversity remains poorly understood. Here we report crystal structures of ABIN-1 alone and in complex with one or two M1-linked di-Ub chains. ABIN-1 UBAN forms a homo-dimer that provides two symmetrical Ub-binding sites on either side of the coiled-coil structure. Moreover, crystal structures of ABIN1 UBAN in complex with di-Ub chains reveal a concentration-dependency of …

Evidence on the cost‐effectiveness of multisectoral maternal and child health and nutrition programmes is scarce. We conducted a prospective costing study of two food‐assisted maternal and child health and nutrition programmes targeted to pregnant women and children during the first 1,000 days (pregnancy to 2 years). Each was paired with a cluster‐randomized controlled trial to evaluate impact and compare the optimal quantity and composition of food rations (Guatemala, five treatment arms) and their optimal timing and duration (Burundi, three treatment arms). We calculated the total and per beneficiary cost, conducted cost consequence analyses, and estimated the cost savings from extending …

Heart failure is a leading cause of mortality, yet our understanding of the genetic interactions underlying this disease remains incomplete. Here, we harvest 1352 healthy and failing human hearts directly from transplant center operating rooms, and obtain genome-wide genotyping and gene expression measurements for a subset of 313. We build failing and non-failing cardiac regulatory gene networks, revealing important regulators and cardiac expression quantitative trait loci (eQTLs). PPP1R3A emerges as a regulator whose network connectivity changes significantly between health and disease. RNA sequencing after PPP1R3A knockdown validates network-based predictions, and highlights metabolic pathway regulation associated with increased cardiomyocyte size and …

There Are Multiple And Geographically Distinct Opioid Crises In The U.S., Shannon M. Monnat

Population Health Research Brief Series

Rates of fatal drug overdose increased 250% in the U.S. between 1999 and 2017, due in large part to a massive surge in overdoses involving opioids. However, there is substantial geographic variation in fatal opioid overdoses, and prescription opioids, heroin, and fentanyl are differentially responsible for high overdose rates across different parts of the U.S. This research brief summarizes the findings from a study just published in the American Journal of Public Health. The study shows that there are at least four geographically distinct opioid overdose crises in the U.S.

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

BACKGROUND: Studies have noted variations in the cost-effectiveness of school-located influenza vaccination (SLIV), but little is known about how SLIV's cost-effectiveness may vary by targeted age group (e.g., elementary or secondary school students), or vaccine consent process (paper-based or web-based). Further, SLIV's cost-effectiveness may be impacted by its spillover effect on practice-based vaccination; prior studies have not addressed this issue.

METHODS: We performed a cost-effectiveness analysis on two SLIV programs in upstate New York in 2015-2016: (a) elementary school SLIV using a stepped wedge design with schools as clusters (24 suburban and 18 urban schools) and (b) secondary school SLIV …
