Our world is becoming increasingly connected due to globalization. As a result, challenges arise that directly affect human, animal, and environmental health. One Health is an integrated approach that focuses on improving communication and collaboration across human, animal, and environmental health sectors. Because emerging infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, climate change, and food safety represent a significant threat to health across all populations, the One Health approach is increasingly important to our comprehensive understanding of and response to global health challenges. This course will provide students an introduction to One Health and the skills needed to address issues at the human-animal-environmental …

Knowledge of breast cancer genetics is critical for those at increased hereditary risk who must make decisions about breast cancer screening options. This descriptive study explored theory-based relationships among cognitive and emotional variables related to knowledge of breast cancer genetics in cancer families. Participants included first-degree relatives of women with breast cancer who had received genetic counseling and testing. Study participants themselves did not have breast cancer and had not received genetic counseling or testing. Data were collected by telephone interviews and surveys. Variables analyzed included numeracy, health literacy, cancer-related distress, age, education, and the reported amount of information shared …

Cerium oxide (CeO2) nanoparticles (CeNPs) are potent antioxidants that are being explored as potential therapies for diseases in which oxidative stress plays an important pathological role. However, both beneficial and toxic effects of CeNPs have been reported, and the method of synthesis as well as physico-chemical, biological, and environmental factors can impact the ultimate biological effects of CeNPs. In the present study, we explored the effect of different ratios of citric acid (CA) and EDTA (CA/EDTA), which are used as stabilizers during synthesis of CeNPs, on the antioxidant enzyme-mimetic and biological activity of the CeNPs. We separated the CeNPs into …

Objective: A current lack of methods for epithelial cell culture significantly hinders our understanding of the role of the epithelial and mucus barriers in vocal fold health and disease. Our first objective was to establish reproducible techniques for the isolation and culture of primary porcine vocal fold epithelial cells. Our second objective was to evaluate the functional significance of cell cultures using an in vitro exposure to an inflammatory cytokine. Methods: Epithelial cells were isolated from porcine vocal folds and expanded in culture. Characterization of cultures was completed by immunostaining with markers for pan-cytokeratin (epithelial cells), vimentin (stromal cells), von …

- Breast milk is the preferred food for all infants.
- The rate of breast milk use at time of discharge was below the goal of the institution.
- A gap was identified in bedside nursing education, limiting their ability to provide resources and education to mothers. Nursing involvement ensures skilled, comprehensive, and accessible breastfeeding support.
- The aim of this project is to increase breast milk rates at time of NICU discharge to 95% of eligible patients by December of 2019.

All aspects of discharge (education, screenings, appointments, plans and home services" must be completed and appropriately communicated prior to discharge to ensure safe transition to home.
Goal: Standardize all aspects of discharge in a large, busy 84-bed Level IV NICU with >1000 admissions/year and >300 nurses, >60 NNPs, and >25 neonatologists.
- 95% of patients with lengths of stay >3 days have all discharge planning completed prior to discharge/Parent Care Unit overnight stay

Project Aims:
- Improve nursing engagement in QI as evidenced by increasing nurse involvement to 40% of overall staff by December 2018, with a continual increase to >50% by June 2019.
- Decrease the % of nurses who express "my opinion doesn't matter" as a reason they do not participate in QI by 30% by June 2019.

An Evidence Based Rationale For Making Tick - Borne Relapsing Fever A Nationally Notifiable Disease, Kyle M. Hatcher
Theses and Dissertations
Tick – borne relapsing fever (TBRF) is globally dispersed, and within the United States is found primarily in the mid – west, south - west, and north – west portions of the country. TBRF is a disease which causes patients to experience flu – like symptoms and is distinguished by multiple relapses of high fever which can cause individuals to be hospitalized multiple times over months. TBRF is caused by Borrelia spp. spirochetes and spread by Onthidoros spp. soft – shelled ticks. First diagnosed in the early 20th century, the disease has gone underdiagnosed and has attracted little attention for …

The Essential Role Of Carbon Metabolism In The Virulence Of Cryptococcus Neoformans, Mara Weigner
Senior Honors Theses
Cryptococcus neoformans infections are a major cause of meningoencephalitis in immunosuppressed patients worldwide. Inhaled as spores or desiccated yeast cells, C. neoformans can undergo metabolic changes in response to the new host environment that allow it to cross the blood brain barrier and cause deadly central nervous system (CNS) infections. Nutrient acquisition, and specifically carbon metabolism, is critical for survival and proliferation within the host. Notably, efficient carbon metabolism is necessary to produce the polysaccharide capsule, which is arguably C. neoformans’ most important and well-studied virulence factor. As such, a better understanding of carbon acquisition and regulation is essential for …

The adaptation of birds to urban environments has created direct hazards to air transportation with the potential for catastrophic incidents. Bird–aircraft collisions involving Canada geese (Branta canadensis; goose) pose greater risks to aircraft than many bird species due to their size and flocking behavior. However, information on factors driving movements of geese near airports and within aircraft arrival/departure areas for application to management are limited. To address this need, we deployed 31 neck collar-mounted global positioning system transmitters on Canada geese near Midway International Airport in Chicago, Illinois, USA during November 2015 to February 2016. We used the movement data …

Background: We aimed to determine the prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and its cross-country variation among hypertensive individuals in rural Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. We also explored the factors associated with CKD in these populations.
Method: We studied baseline data from the Control of Blood Pressure and Risk Attenuation-Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka (COBRA-BPS) trial, an ongoing cluster randomized controlled trial on 2643 hypertensive adults ≥40 years of age from 30 randomly selected rural clusters, 10 in each of the three countries. CKD was defined as an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) /min/1.73 m2 or a urine albumin:creatinine …

This research is a quantitative research with descriptive design. This research is background by the importance of employee’s satisfaction in the Human Service Organization’s setting. Meanwhile, the research about employee’s job satisfaction among Human Service Organization is still rare. The result of this research shows that there’s a very weak correlation between the level work-life balance to the level of job satisfaction among Yayasan Plan International Indonesia’s Employees. This can be caused by the difference in characteristic between HSO and company. …
