Dentistry

Background: Recurrent aphthous ulcers (RAU) are common painful inflammatory lesions of the mucous lining of the mouth. Endocan, previously identified as endothelial cell specific molecule-1, is implicated as a vital player in the regulation of several inflammatory processes. A number of inflammatory cytokines and pro-angiogenic growth factors including VEGF upregulate endothelial cells synthesis and expression of endocan. Material and Methods: Clinical scores of pain and ulcer size as well as level of endocan and VEGF were determined in swaps from aphthous ulcer and contra lateral normal mucosa in 30 patients (nine males and twenty one females) with age ranging from …

Examining The Impact Of Educational Modules On Self-Care, Burnout, And Professional Impairment On Graduate And Medical Students, Samantha Giangrande Jan 2019

Examining The Impact Of Educational Modules On Self-Care, Burnout, And Professional Impairment On Graduate And Medical Students, Samantha Giangrande

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Graduate school is a time of academic rigor, personal growth, stress, change, fear, and confrontation. It is important for medical and other graduate students to prepare themselves to serve and treat their patients effectively. An important part of this involves learning skills to better manage challenges and demands through ongoing self-care. However, little research has examined what knowledge students have of self-care strategies and burnout or whether education about these constructs is lacking in higher education. The purpose of this study was to examine the efficacy of self-care and impairment modules for medical and other graduate students enrolled in an …

Long-Term Use Of Beta-Blocker Medication In Pediatric Long Qt Syndrome Patients: Neuropsychological Profiles, Kara J. Rudisill Jan 2019

Long-Term Use Of Beta-Blocker Medication In Pediatric Long Qt Syndrome Patients: Neuropsychological Profiles, Kara J. Rudisill

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Long QT syndrome (LQTS) is a heart rhythm disorder characterized by a disruption of the heart’s electrical activity that may cause accelerated and uncontrolled heartbeats referred to as ventricular fibrillation. LQTS is primarily treated with beta-blocker medications, which reduce the risk of experiencing an arrhythmia through regulating the heart rate. However, the potential neuropsychological side-effects associated with the use of beta-blocker medication may impact the executive functioning skills, mental health, and behavior of the affected pediatric population at home. As a result, a child’s academic performance and emotional regulation etiology may be misunderstood by his or her parents, caregivers, and …

Association Between Education And Health Outcomes Among Adults With Disabilities: Evidence From Shanghai, China, Tong Ge, Qi Zhang, Jun Lu, Gang Chen, Mei Sun, Xiaohong Li

Community & Environmental Health Faculty Publications

Background

Adults with disabilities often have worse health outcomes than do their peers without disabilities. While education is a key determinant of health, there is little research available on the health disparities across education levels among adults with disabilities in developing countries. We therefore examined the association between health outcomes and education among adults with disabilities in Shanghai, China.

Methods

We used the health examination records of 42,715 adults with disabilities in Shanghai in 2014. Five health outcomes, including two diseases (fatty liver and hemorrhoids) and three risk factors (overweight [body mass index ≥ 24]), high blood glucose, and high …

Just Culture: It's More Than Policy, Linda Paradiso, Nancy Sweeney Jan 2019

Just Culture: It's More Than Policy, Linda Paradiso, Nancy Sweeney

Ellmer School of Nursing Faculty Publications

[Description] Paradiso and Sweeney discuss the relationship between trust, just culture, and error reporting in medical care. Errors rarely occur in a vacuum, rather they're a sequence of events with multiple opportunities for correction. Clinical nurses can have a significant impact on reducing errors due to their proximity to patients. Just culture is a safe haven that supports reporting. In a just culture environment, organizations are accountable for systems they design and analysis of the incident, not the individual. The shift to a just culture is a slow process that takes years to develop and hardwire. Hospital-wide policies that incorporate …

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Overexpression of correctly folded membrane proteins is a fundamental prerequisite for functional and structural studies. One of the most commonly used expression systems for the production of membrane proteins is Escherichia coli. While misfolded proteins typically aggregate and form inclusions bodies, membrane proteins that are addressed to the membrane and extractable by detergents are generally assumed to be properly folded. Accordingly, GFP fusion strategy is often used as a fluorescent proxy to monitor their expression and folding quality. Here we investigated the functionality of two different multidrug ABC transporters, the homodimer BmrA from Bacillus subtilis and the heterodimer PatA/PatB …

Dynamics Of Two Pathogens In A Single Tick Population, Alexis White, Elsa Schaefer, Chelsea Wright-Thompson, Christopher M. Kribs, Holly Gaff Jan 2019

Dynamics Of Two Pathogens In A Single Tick Population, Alexis White, Elsa Schaefer, Chelsea Wright-Thompson, Christopher M. Kribs, Holly Gaff

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

A mathematical model for a two-pathogen, one-tick, one-host system is presented and explored. The goal of this model is to determine how long an invading pathogen persists within a tick population in which a resident pathogen is already established. The numerical simulations of the model demonstrate the parameter ranges that allow for coexistence of the two pathogens. Sensitivity analysis highlights the importance of vector-borne, tick-to-host, transmission rates on the invasion reproductive number and persistence of the pathogens over time. The model is then applied to a case study based on a reclaimed swampland field site in southeastern Virginia using field …

Ecological Influences On Dietary Behavior: The Interaction Between Person And Neighborhood Environment In A Low-Ses, Hispanic Community, Emily Kiresich

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Despite existing knowledge about lifestyle choices and their relationships to obesity and diabetes, the prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is increasing, and the number of Americans at risk is greater than 70% (CDC, 2019). Obesity is a complex, multifactorial, and largely preventable disease, affecting, along with overweight, over a third of the world's population today. A significant factor in lifestyle management is the ecology of food choice. Literature suggests that environment and exposure can predict food-related health risk behaviors and health outcomes. The objective of this dissertation was to conceptualize and carry out a series of pilot studies …

The Intergenerational Transfer Of Criminal Justice Involvement: Risk And Protective Factors As Moderating Variables, Caitlin Storm Jan 2019

The Intergenerational Transfer Of Criminal Justice Involvement: Risk And Protective Factors As Moderating Variables, Caitlin Storm

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Previous literature identified evidence of a transfer of criminal justice involvement between generations of family members. This relationship has proven especially strong between parents and children. Different demographic factors slightly alter the strength and significance of the transfer, but the established relationship between the criminal justice involvement of the parent and the increased likelihood of the child’s criminal justice involvement remains consistent. Data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997 was used to analyze the effect of the father’s criminal justice involvement on his child’s. Using binary logistic regression models, predictor variables were included in a step-wise fashion to …

Louis De La Forge On Mind-Body Interaction And The Case Against Occasionalism, Melissa Kalaee Gholamnejad Jan 2019

Louis De La Forge On Mind-Body Interaction And The Case Against Occasionalism, Melissa Kalaee Gholamnejad

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Fidelity to the Cartesian philosophy requires a defense of dualism as well as mind-body union and interaction, all the while keeping to some form of the causal likeness principle. Each of these positions are ones that Descartes maintained throughout his writings. Yet, successors and scholars alike have noted the inconsistencies that arise from defending these views conjointly and have argued that one or more of them should be abandoned. Even the first generation of Cartesian successors whose fidelity to the Cartesian principles was especially steadfast, such as Louis de la Forge, have been interpreted and characterized as giving up causal …

Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is: Reforming Organized Dentistry To Address Persistent Oral Health Disparities In The U.S., Aparna Chintapalli

Pomona Senior Theses

The importance of oral health has been largely neglected from the conventional standards of healthcare in terms of public understanding & prioritization, the industrial infrastructure, and the scope of prevention & early-intervention services. Its adjunctive locus to the field of medicine has lead to the bifurcation of the oral cavity from the rest of the human body. As a result of this divide, there have been multiple factors that have allowed socially stratified oral health outcomes to manifest. This thesis examines the determinants of oral health disparities through a multidisciplinary lens (i.e. biology, public policy, infrastructure), and offers evidence of …

'Nephrogenic' Systemic Fibrosis Is Mediated By Myeloid C-C Chemokine Receptor 2 Dataset, Catherine Do, Viktor Drel, Chunyan Tan, Duck-Yoon Lee, Brent Wagner

The Kidney Institute of New Mexico

This dataset presents results of an in vivo model of gadolinium-based contrast agent-induced systemic fibrosis. Figure 1 demonstrates that gadolinium-based contrast agent treatment induces dermal fibrosis and hypercellularity of the same magnitude in patients afflicted with ‘nephrogenic’ systemic fibrosis. Electron microscopy demonstrated that systemic gadolinium treatment induced the formation of multinucleated giant cells in the dermis laden with electron-dense, mesh-like nanostructures. Scanning transmission electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy revealed that the electron-dense nanoparticles were gadolinium rich. Figure 2 represents the first chimeric model of mice and gadolinium-induced systemic fibrosis (to our knowledge). Lethally-irradiated mice with 5/6 nephrectomy (to model renal …

The intent of this article is to show that wireless technology is, without remedy other than termination, one of the most devastating environmental and health threats and threats to personal liberty ever created. It is becoming widely known that 4G and 5G technologies cause many harms to human health. Cancer is only one problem, and one that is easily solved. 4G and 5G cause 720! (factorial) different maladies in human beings, and can kill everything that lives but some forms of micro organisms. Some pathogens and certain parasites are made more virulent by selected frequencies of RF. Insects and birds …

Sparsity Promoting Regularization For Effective Noise Suppression In Spect Image Reconstruction, Wei Zheng, Si Li, Andrzej Krol, C. Ross Schmidtlein, Xueying Zeng, Yuesheng Xu

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

The purpose of this research is to develop an advanced reconstruction method for low-count, hence high-noise, Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) image reconstruction. It consists of a novel reconstruction model to suppress noise while conducting reconstruction and an efficient algorithm to solve the model. A novel regularizer is introduced as the nonconvex denoising term based on the approximate sparsity of the image under a geometric tight frame transform domain. The deblurring term is based on the negative log-likelihood of the SPECT data model. To solve the resulting nonconvex optimization problem a Preconditioned Fixed-point Proximity Algorithm (PFPA) is introduced. We prove …

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Toxin-antitoxin (TA) gene pairs have been identified in nearly all bacterial genomes sequenced to date and are thought to facilitate persistence and antibiotic tolerance. TA loci are classified into various types based upon the characteristics of their antitoxins, with those in type II expressing proteic antitoxins. Many toxins from type II modules are ribonucleases that maintain a PilT N-terminal (PIN) domain containing conserved amino acids considered essential for activity. The vapBC (virulence-associated protein) TA system is the largest subfamily in this class and has been linked to pathogenesis of nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi). In this …

Despite significant progress, China faces the challenge of re-emerging schistosomiasis transmission in currently controlled areas due, in part, to the presence of a range of animal reservoirs, notably water buffalo and cattle, which can harbor Schistosoma japonicum infections. Environmental, ecological and social-demographic changes in China, shown to affect the distribution of oncomelanid snails, can also impact future schistosomiasis transmission. In light of their importance in the S. japonicum, lifecycle, vaccination has been proposed as a means to reduce the excretion of egg from cattle and buffalo, thereby interrupting transmission from these reservoir hosts to snails. A DNA-based vaccine (SjCTPI) …

Traumatic Neuroma Of The Median Nerve: A Case Report, Keir Johnson, Amber West, Brooke Baker Jan 2019

Traumatic Neuroma Of The Median Nerve: A Case Report, Keir Johnson, Amber West, Brooke Baker

UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal

Peripheral nerve neuromas are growths that develop after nerve trauma, which can result in enlarged and painful nerve ends when severed. Treatment of neuromas that form within a continuous nerve is controversial; however, success has been reported after general neurolysis with decompression of the nerve after its isolation from the surrounding scar bed. We describe a 21-year-old man who presented with symptoms of pain and intermittent numbness in his left elbow. Findings of high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasound confirmed the diagnosis of median nerve neuroma at the level of the forearm. He subsequently underwent neurolysis with protective nerve wrap, …

Fracture Of The Ulnar Sesamoid Bone In The Thumb Of A Collegiate Basketball Player: A Case Report, Andrew M. Hyden, Christopher A. Mcgrew, Deana Mercer

UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal

Sesamoid fractures of the hand are uncommon occurrences that can lead to prolonged pain and swelling if delayed in diagnosis. This is particularly problematic in competitive athletes. We describe an ulnar sesamoid fracture of the thumb due to a blunt traumatic injury in a Division I collegiate basketball player. The 22-year-old woman injured her left thumb when kicked during a game. The patient was treated nonoperatively with promising outcomes. Sesamoid fractures of the hand can be difficult to diagnose, and any delay can lengthen the amount of time before the athlete returns to play. Radiographic findings may help healthcare providers …

Open Lumbosacral Dislocation: A Case Report, Travis M. Hughes, Tony G. Pedri, Antony Kallur

UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal

Open injuries in the lumbar spine are rare. We describe a 20-year-old woman who presented with persistent weaknesses due to an associated lumbar plexus injury. She underwent surgical treatment of lumbosacral dislocation with prompt reduction with debridement and stabilization. At 7 months postoperatively, her symptoms showed signs of recovery. We believe the immediate reduction of the dislocation prevented permanent neurological injury, and stabilization helped healing and early mobilization. In keeping with the classical teaching of open fracture treatment, prioritizing early initiation of intravenous antibiotics and prompt debridement and stabilization may have helped decrease the long-term morbidity and overall sequelae of …
