Condom Use Among Urban African American Adolescent Females, Jaquetta Marie Reeves
Condom Use Among Urban African American Adolescent Females, Jaquetta Marie Reeves
Wayne State University Dissertations
ABSTRACT
Background: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are one of the most common global health problems, having a profound impact on sexual and reproductive health worldwide. The CDC estimates that approximately 20 million new infections occur each year in the U.S., and almost half of them are among adolescents age 15–24. Despite government initiatives on STI prevention programs for adolescents, there is dearth of knowledge regarding the lack of condom use among adolescent high school students, especially concerning African American females who live in urban areas.
Purpose: The purpose of this research was to explore attitudes towards condoms, subjective norms and …
Women In Sport: The Influence Of Societal Expectations On Female Fighters, Madison Crimi-Demichele
Women In Sport: The Influence Of Societal Expectations On Female Fighters, Madison Crimi-Demichele
Whittier Scholars Program
Women have made great strives to receive the same opportunities as men and rise above subordinate positions - in sport, the workplace, and society as a whole. Women's participation in sport has been examined frequently in most areas of individual and team sports, yet little research has been conducted on professional Mixed Martial Arts fighters. Existing evidence and social theories indicate that as a greater number of female fighters participate in the sport of MMA without giving into stereotypical gender roles there will be a decrease in the effects of societal expectations such as: male gaze, subordinate roles of women, …

Vwa: Hearing The Courageous Voices Of Extraordinary Women Who Have Experienced Intimate Partner Violence In Haiti, An Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis, Michaelle Darley Pierre
Department of Family Therapy Dissertations and Applied Clinical Projects
Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is a huge epidemic in Haiti. It is estimated that 273,200 women suffer from instances of IPV yearly in Haiti. This is in line with the finding that 9.4% of the population of 14-49 year old Haitian women are affected by IPV (Gage, Honoré, & Deleon, 2016; Hindin, Kishor, & Ansara, 2008). It is critical to incorporate the voices of courageous women who have lived through partner violence into our understanding of this phenomenon. This qualitative study aimed to hear the VWA (Voice in Creole) of women in Haiti based on their lived experiences of IPV …
Transgender Parent Differentiation: A Heuristic Phenomenological Study, Eva Smidova
Transgender Parent Differentiation: A Heuristic Phenomenological Study, Eva Smidova
Department of Family Therapy Dissertations and Applied Clinical Projects
Transgender individuals go through their intrapersonal differentiation between covert “I” (expressed gender) and overt “I” (assigned gender), often unnoticed by family members before their coming out. Consequently, their coming out rockets anxiety in the family system and the process of differentiation of transgender parents seem to go through its unique path to search for equilibrium. Recent social and clinical studies about transgender parents have paid attention to the experience and challenges of the gender transition process, social pressure, acceptance of transgender individuals in a parenting role, and readiness of families to cope with the transition of a parent (Bischof, Warnaar, …
A Phenomenological Study Of Black Fathers In Child Welfare, Tamaru N. Phillips
A Phenomenological Study Of Black Fathers In Child Welfare, Tamaru N. Phillips
Department of Family Therapy Dissertations and Applied Clinical Projects
Each year thousands of children are removed from their homes and placed in foster care where they lose connections with their family, community, and friends. Coakley (2007) points out that children of color are overly represented within the child welfare system, and there is a lack of research on Black fathers and their involvement when their children become a part of the system. Studies have suggested that most families that encounter the child welfare system have adult males who are actively involved with their families, however, child welfare workers do not engage these men (Coady, Hoy, & Cameron, 2013). The …
The Experience Of Sexual Abuse Of Afro Caribbean Women: The Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis Of The Particularities Attached To Disclosure, Angela Hood
Department of Family Therapy Dissertations and Applied Clinical Projects
Sexual abuse is often associated with long-term distressing effects. The experience of sexual abuse differs between survivors and the disclosure of the abuse is a complicated process that may have many particularities attached. For this study, I conducted an interpretative phenomenological analysis to understand how Afro-Caribbean women who experienced sexual abuse understand and make meaning of their experiences and the particularities attached to disclosure. Although prior research regarding sexual abuse has been conducted, research amongst Afro-Caribbean women has been minimal. Further absent from the sexual abuse literature is the lived experience of this population and the meaning they ascribe to …

Clinical Director Perspectives On Decision Making Of Family Involvement With Clients At Inpatient Substance Abuse Treatment Centers, Lauren Amber Serdencuk
Department of Family Therapy Dissertations and Applied Clinical Projects
Literature supports that family members of individuals who abuse substances are significantly influential, whether it be positive or negative (Liddle et al., 2001). Evidence-based family therapy decreases substance use by adolescents (Slesnick et al., 2006). The purpose of this study was to gain the perspectives of clinical directors regarding decision making of family involvement at inpatient substance abuse treatment centers. Clinical directors were the focus of this study due to their experience, credentials, and their ability to oversee all clients and programs in a substance abuse treatment center. Purposeful sampling was utilized to obtain participants. Saturation was reached at three …
Marriage And Family Therapists’ Clinical Impressions Of Romantic Relationship Dissolution Heartbreak: A Modified Delphi Study, Isibel C. Moreno
Marriage And Family Therapists’ Clinical Impressions Of Romantic Relationship Dissolution Heartbreak: A Modified Delphi Study, Isibel C. Moreno
Department of Family Therapy Dissertations and Applied Clinical Projects
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary (2018) defines heartbreak as “crushing grief, anguish or distress.” Heartbreak can lead to biological, psychological and social responses and consequences. Heartbreak from the dissolution of a romantic relationship is a form of disenfranchised grief, which is defined as the griever’s belief that society does not recognize their source of grief as legitimate (Doka, 1989). The literature shows that talking about grief helps those who experience it (Fisher & Archer, 2008). Hence, the present study sought to provide a consensus of the best practices that marriage and family therapists have utilized to help broken-hearted clients. I employed a …

Large Pelvic Tubercle In Orangutans Relates To The Adductor Longus Muscle, Brian M. Shearer, Magdalena Muchlinski, Ashley S. Hammond
Publications and Research
Orangutan pelves commonly exhibit a large, projecting tubercle in the iliopubic region, historically assumed to homologous to the pubic tubercle in humans. However, it is not clear whether this tubercle is a unique feature of Pongo, or if it is anatomically homologous with the human pubic tubercle when considered as a soft tissue attachment point. To clarify this issue, we dissected orangutan and other ape cadaveric specimens to evaluate the pelvic brim soft tissues and how they may relate to the tubercle (when present). We additionally conducted a broad osteological survey of pelvic brim morphology across 28 primate genera …

Publications and Research
The cadherin–catenin adhesion complex is the central component of the cell–cell adhesion adherens junctions that transmit mechanical stress from cell to cell. We have determined the nanoscale structure of the adherens junction complex formed by the α-catenin•β-catenin•epithelial cadherin cytoplasmic domain (ABE) using negative stain electron microscopy, small-angle X-ray scattering, and selective deuteration/small-angle neutron scattering. The ABE complex is highly pliable and displays a wide spectrum of flexible structures that are facilitated by protein-domain motions in α- and β-catenin. Moreover, the 107-residue intrinsically disordered N-terminal segment of β-catenin forms a flexible “tongue” that is inserted into α-catenin and participates in the …
The Trouble With Burnout: An Update On Burnout-Depression Overlap, Renzo Bianchi, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Eric Laurent
The Trouble With Burnout: An Update On Burnout-Depression Overlap, Renzo Bianchi, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Eric Laurent
Publications and Research
Reducing depression to its clinical stage—to a nosological category—is unwarranted when examining the burnout-depression distinction. Recent factor analytic studies of burnout and depression measures indicate that the discriminant validity of the burnout construct is not satisfactory. Exhaustion—the core and only consensual characteristic of burnout—has been repeatedly found to correlate more strongly with depression (including anhedonia and depressed mood) than with the two other components of burnout (cynicism and professional inefficacy).

Development And Evaluation Of Vaccine Candidates For Senecavirus A, Bishwas Sharma
Development And Evaluation Of Vaccine Candidates For Senecavirus A, Bishwas Sharma
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Senecavirus A (SVA) has been associated with several outbreaks of vesicular disease (VD) since 2014 in major swine-producing countries around the world. The virus causes VD that is clinically indistinguishable from foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in pigs. Currently there are no commercial vaccines available for SVA. Here, we developed a live attenuated SVA strain by mutating a wild type SVA strain SD15-26 (wt SVA). The live attenuated virus, rSVA mSacII, replicated less efficiently in cell cultures in vitro and expressed lower amounts of VP1 and VP2 capsid proteins than wt SVA. Most importantly, the rSVA mSacII virus failed to induce clinical …
Novel Hybrid Analogs Of Estrone Origin Exhibits Cytotoxic Effects Against Egfr-Dependent Cancers, Felix Acheampong
Novel Hybrid Analogs Of Estrone Origin Exhibits Cytotoxic Effects Against Egfr-Dependent Cancers, Felix Acheampong
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Cancer is second only to cardiovascular illnesses as the deadliest human disease globally. Currently, non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and triple negative breast carcinoma (TNBC) are the most frequent types of cancer and have the highest mortalities. Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), a central regulator of tumor progression, is frequently overexpressed in both cancers and is a key clinical target for therapeutic intervention. Natural products and their synthetic analogs have been utilized as EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) with potent antitumor effects. However, acquired resistance limits the long-term efficacy of these drugs. Estrone has been used as a scaffold in …

Design, Synthesis, And Evaluation Of Gunw-3 As A Brain Targeting Agent, Asim Najmi
Design, Synthesis, And Evaluation Of Gunw-3 As A Brain Targeting Agent, Asim Najmi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The blood brain barrier (BBB) is a barrier in the brain that separates the peripheral blood circulation system from the central nerve system (CNS). The barrier effectively protects the brain from xenobiotics. The BBB serves as a physical barrier through the tight junction of endothelial cells that were found to be 50-100 times tighter than that of normal endothelial cells. Different drug efflux pumps such as P-glycoproteins and multidrug-resistance proteins are found to be overdistributed on the BBB. These drug efflux pumps help pump xenobiotics out if they enter the cells and serv as an additional mechanism to prevent xenobiotics …
Nutritional Transporter Mediated Drug Delivery For Cancer, Siddharth S. Kesharwani
Nutritional Transporter Mediated Drug Delivery For Cancer, Siddharth S. Kesharwani
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Recent advancements in nanotechnology have unfolded novel opportunities in medicine, especially in targeted therapeutics and imaging for cancer. However, the majority of the existing nanotechnologies for cancer suffer from shortcomings such as (i) rapid elimination from the systemic circulation before reaching the cancer tissue. (ii) poor tumor accumulation, targeting, and penetration due to inadequate vasculature and extensive extracellular matrix in the tumor. Thus, overcoming these two limitations of nanotechnology is of considerable interests for cancer researchers. In this dissertation, we demonstrate the feasibility of glucose-modified nanoparticles (GLU-NPs) as an efficient cancer targeted-delivery system for enhancing the systemic circulation time and …
Alternative Treatment Options For Controlling Anthelmintic-Resistant Haemonchus Contortus Populations In South Dakota Sheep Herds, Adam Sarah
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Haemonchus contortus is a common economically important gastrointestinal nematode that obliges the survival and productivity of small ruminants, especially sheep and goats. Anthelmintic resistance is a primary challenge in ruminant health management programs in preventing and controlling the H. contortus populations; therefore, there is a great necessity in finding and developing natural plant products for use as alternatives to commercial anthelmintics for controlling H. contortus in pastured sheep and goats. This dissertation has three major aims conducted in three separate studies: the first in vivo one was to evaluate the extended effect of a springtime, combined-treatment with 3 anthelmintics having …

Development Of A Novel Nanotechnology-Based Vaccine Adjuvant And Delivery System For Systemic And Mucosal Immunity, Mohammed Ali Bakkari
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Many serious infections for which there are no existing vaccines, enter by a mucosal route such as HIV, influenza, and tuberculosis, etc. Therefore, designing safe and effective mucosal vaccines that elicit robust immune response at mucosal sites is still a major challenge without a safe mucosal adjuvant. Previously, our laboratory had discovered inulin acetate as a novel toll-like-receptor-4 agonist (adjuvant). The study in this dissertation explored the application of nanoparticles prepared with inulin acetate (InAc-NPs) as a vaccine adjuvant and delivery system for enhancing mucosal immunity. The rationale behind selecting InAc-NPs is their proven ability to activate strong systemic immunity …
Using Maximum Power As A Variable For 1rm Prediction In The Squat And Bench Press, Sean O'Connor
Using Maximum Power As A Variable For 1rm Prediction In The Squat And Bench Press, Sean O'Connor
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Many Strength and Conditioning (S&C) coaches utilize a one-rep max (1RM) exercise test to gauge the maximal strength of athletes, and then prescribe resistance training programs based on a relative percentage of 1RM to obtain strength or power adaptations. However, many S&C coaches have raised questions regarding the safety and necessity of a 1RM test. Attempts to mitigate the weaknesses of 1RM testing have led to other methods of testing including repetition max testing (3RM, 5RM, 10RM, etc.) as well as load/velocity profiling. The main purpose of this study is to determine if 1RM can be accurately estimated from maximal …
