Level Of Postoperative Pain As It Relates To Patients Undergoing Robotic And Open Thyroidectomy Surgery, Lucinda E. Zeilinger

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Background: With the growing popularity of robotic surgery, more research should be performed to compare the outcomes with the conventional, open approaches. In particular, comparison of postoperative pain is needed as it has significant implications for nursing practice. Purpose: The purpose of this critical review of the literature is to examine evidence on postoperative pain scores between the robotic thyroidectomy and the open approach. Results: Eighteen articles were identified for review and were analyzed using the Johns Hopkins Nursing Evidence-Based Practice Research Evidence Appraisal tool (Dang & Dearholt, 2018). The literature revealed no significant differences in postoperative pain and discomfort …

Assessing The Use Of Pre-Treatment Medications In The Management Of Infusion-Related Reactions In An Outpatient Infusion Center, Alyssa Boesche, Alyssa Augst, Bill Kuhlman

Pharmacy Posters

Introduction

  • Infusion-related reactions (IRRs) are well-known adverse drug reactions of many biological agents and antineoplastic medications
  • While typically mild-to-moderate in intensity, IRRs can be severe, with potentially life-threatening consequences requiring urgent interventions
  • Appropriate use of pre-treatment medications, such as corticosteroids, antihistamines, intravenous fluids, and antiemetics reduces the incidence and severity of IRRs

Purpose

  • Evaluate the use of pre-treatment medications in patients with experienced IRRs at an outpatient infusion center
  • Identify opportunities to improve treatment plans and reduce the occurrence of IRRs

Evaluating The Effect Of Sodium Zirconium Cyclosilicate In Acute Hyperkalemia Management, Austin Brandes, Hannah Thompson, Paul Huiras

Pharmacy Posters

Introduction

  • Sodium zirconium cyclosilicate (ZS-9) can acutely decrease serum potassium (K) levels after one dose and may have favorable side effects compared to sodium polystyrene sulfate (SPS).
  • ZS-9 replaced oral SPS in the Hyperkalemia Order Set at St. Cloud Hospital in April 2019

Purpose

  • To characterize the acute potassium-lowering effects of one 10-gram dose of sodium zirconium cyclosilicate in conjunction with other potassium-lowering medications

Journey To Zero Ng-Related Hapi's, Kristin Gaarder

Nursing Posters

From October 2015 to April 2016, there were five Stage II or higher inner nares hospital acquired pressure injuries (HAPIs) caused by nasogastric (NG) tubes, with one being unstageable. These occurred despite previously implemented evidence- based prevention strategies, which included:

• Two-person skin assessments on admission and return from surgery

• Two-person skin assessment upon transfer from unit to unit

• Daily skin assessments including under devices

• Access to the Wound Ostomy Continence (WOC) team

Neuroscience Spine Float Buddy Program, Jenna Czech

Nursing Posters

Why?

In our commitment as a unit to role model best practice as we support the staff that float to us from other departments, we initiated a new process so all staff that come to our unit will feel welcome, well-prepared, and supported in their roles with our patient population, environment, and our team. It has been identified that we had opportunities related to resources for staff floating from other units.

A 10-Year Review Of Opioid-Related Deaths At West Tennessee Regional Forensic Center: 2007-2017, Haley M. St John, Juliette Scantlebury Md

Longitudinal Scholar's Project

Prescription opioid deaths have tripled since 1999, and currently opioid overdose kills 115 Americans per day on average (1). Prior to 2014, prescription opioids have been the primary driver of opioid-related mortality. In recent years, the United States has seen a steady decline in the rate of opioid prescription. At the same time, there has been a significant increase in the number of deaths attributed to non-prescription opioids such as heroin, illicitly manufactured fentanyl, and fentanyl analogues. In 2017, among 70,237 drug overdose deaths nationally, 47,600 (67.8%) involved opioids, with increases across age groups, racial/ethnic groups, and county urbanization levels …

Using The Backward Design Process To Integrate Interprofessional Education Utilizing Simulation In Ot And Pt Educational Curricula, Norman C. Belleza, Maureen Johnson

Physical Therapy Collection

Interprofessional simulation education (IPSE) has been integrated into the OT and PT curriculum. Having a dedicated simulation center on-site allows for continued use of IPSE for regular monitoring and assessment of student achievement in interprofessional exchanges. Additional healthcare disciplines can also integrate IPSE including nursing, nurse practitioner, physician’s assistant, post-graduate professionals, athletic trainers, and speech and langue pathology. Inclusion of IPSE will augment the collaborative effort for increased interactions among various health care providers.

Neurons consume the highest amount of oxygen, depend on oxidative metabolism for energy, and survive for the lifetime of an individual. Therefore, neurons are vulnerable to death caused by oxidative-stress, accumulation of damaged and dysfunctional proteins and organelles. There is an exponential increase in the number of patients diagnosed with neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s (AD) as the number of elderly increases exponentially. Development of AD pathology is a complex phenomenon characterized by neuronal death, accumulation of extracellular amyloid-β plaques and neurofibrillary tangles, and most importantly loss of memory and cognition. These pathologies are most likely caused by mechanisms including …
