The Qualitative Report

This study aims to uncover and describe stories of progressive cognitive, emotional, and behavioral decline in NFL players, as told by those who may know them best: their wives. The goal of the study was to simply explore and understand this new phenomenon with a group of individuals who had not yet been asked to voice their experiences. For this qualitative study, we conducted interviews with 20 wives of current and retired NFL players. Through thematic analysis of the wives’ narratives, we identified four themes that help to describe the wives’ attitudes and experiences. These were (a) Husbands’ Willingness to …

Clinical and Translational Science Institute

L-NAME-induced hypertension is commonly used to study endothelial dysfunction and related vascular effects. It has been reported that genetic deletion of A1 adenosine receptor (AR) reduces blood pressure (BP) increases in mice and thus, suggesting the involvement of A1AR. Thus, we sought to determine whether A1AR-induced vascular responses were altered in this mouse model of hypertension. L-NAME (1 mg/ml) was given in the drinking water for 28 days to mice. The BP was monitored using non-invasive tail-cuff system. Muscle tension studies were performed using DMT for mesenteric arteries (MAs) and organ bath for aorta. Protein expression was analyzed by western …

Background: Ethanol abuse promotes breast cancer development, metastasis and recurrence stimulating mammary tumorigenesis by mechanisms that remain unclear. Normally, 35% of breast cancer is Erb-B2 Receptor Tyrosine Kinase 2 (ERBB2)-positive that predisposes to poor prognosis and relapse, while ethanol drinking leads to invasion of their ERBB2 positive cells triggering the phosphorylation status of mitogen-activated protein kinase. StAR-related lipid transfer protein 10 (STARD10) is a lipid transporter of phosphatidylcholine (PC) and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE); changes on membrane composition of PC and PE occur before the morphological tumorigenic events. Interestingly, STARD10 has been described to be highly expressed in 35–40% of ERBB2-positive breast …

Individual-Level Antibody Dynamics Reveal Potential Drivers Of Influenza A Seasonality In Wild Pig Populations, Kim M. Pepin, Kerri Pedersen, Xiu-Feng Wan, Fred L. Cunningham, Colleen T. Webb, Mark Q. Wilber Jan 2019

Individual-Level Antibody Dynamics Reveal Potential Drivers Of Influenza A Seasonality In Wild Pig Populations, Kim M. Pepin, Kerri Pedersen, Xiu-Feng Wan, Fred L. Cunningham, Colleen T. Webb, Mark Q. Wilber

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Swine are important in the ecology of influenza A virus (IAV) globally. Understanding the ecological role of wild pigs in IAV ecology has been limited because surveillance in wild pigs is often for antibodies (serosurveillance) rather than IAVs, as in humans and domestic swine. As IAV antibodies can persist long after an infection, serosurveillance data are not necessarily indicative of current infection risk. However, antibody responses to IAV infections cause a predictable antibody response, thus time of infection can be inferred from antibody levels in serological samples, enabling identification of risk factors of infection at estimated times of infection. Recent …

Cardiovascular Safety Of Febuxostat And Allopurinol In Gout/Hyperuricemia Patients: A Retrospective Cohort Event Reporting In A Tertiary Healthcare Facility, Sonal M. Sekhar Dr

Manipal College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Manipal Theses and Dissertations

Background: On February 21st 2019, FDA added a boxed warning for increased risk of death with febuxostat compared to allopurinol. Purpose: To compare the incidence of cardiovascular events and efficacy between febuxostat and allopurinol use. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted in hyperuricemic/gout patients admitted between 2013 to 2017. Study cohort (febuxostat/allopurinol/both) and control cohort (drugs other than febuxostat/allopurinol) were selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. The primary outcomes were various cardiovascular events which were compared and analysed using IBM SPSS version 20 and p<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Mean reduction in level of serum urate after febuxostat and allopurinol use was 2.754 mg/dl [p=0.000; CI (95%) 2.209-3.299] and 1.137 mg/dl [p=0.000; CI (95%) 0.792-1.482], respectively. However, there was no statistically significant difference between the groups. The mean survival time for febuxostat was 37 months [CI (95%) 24-51], whereas for allopurinol was 107 months [CI (95%) 52-162] and for both users was 38 months [CI (95%) 20-56]. However, there was no significant difference among the groups (p=0.762). Cardiovascular events occurred in 4 (5.63%) patients in febuxostat group (n=71), 6 (6.45%) patients in allopurinol group (n=93) and 3 (30%) patients in group with both drugs (n=10). The number needed to harm (NNH) for febuxostat, allopurinol and with both drugs were 22, 19 and 3, respectively. Conclusion: Both febuxostat and allopurinol are significantly efficacious in reducing serum urate levels. Lesser mean survival time in febuxostat group indicates faster occurrence of cardiovascular events. On the other hand, incidence of cardiovascular events was more with allopurinol than febuxostat without statistical significance. We observed these cardiovascular adverse events of allopurinol and febuxostat are duration depended.

Introduction To Medical Coding, Introductory Module, Veronica F. Mcgowan

Faculty Articles & Research

In our increasingly global economy, manufacturers and distributers sending and receiving goods are frustrated by the reality of multiple languages. As an example of corporate coding, proactive management in an automotive company have invented a coding system where each car type has its own identification code with associated words that describe the product. Therefore, they can be confident that anyone referring to ID 4523 is describing a four-door vehicle (4000 level), compact vehicle (500), black color (20) with leather interior (3). This example is analogous to clinical or medical coding.

Interval, Jessica L. Allen, Brenen W. Papenberg, River A. Hames, Johnathan E. Castaño, Dorothy A. Schafer, Scott A. Weed

Clinical and Translational Science Institute

Malregulation of the actin cytoskeleton enhances tumor cell motility and invasion. The actin-binding protein cortactin facilitates branched actin network formation through activation of the actin-related protein (Arp) 2/3 complex. Increased cortactin expression due to gene amplification is observed in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) and other cancers, corresponding with elevated tumor progression and poor patient outcome. Arp2/3 complex activation is responsible for driving increased migration and extracellular matrix (ECM) degradation by governing invadopodia formation and activity. Although cortactin-mediated activation of Arp2/3 complex and invadopodia regulation has been well established, signaling pathways responsible for governing cortactin binding to Arp2/3 …

Cyclin C: The Story Of A Non-Cycling Cyclin, Jan Jezek, Daniel G J Smethurst, David C Stieg, Z A C Kiss, Sara E Hanley, Vidyaramanan Ganesan, Kai-Ti Chang, Katrina F Cooper, Randy Strich

Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Departmental Research

The class I cyclin family is a well-studied group of structurally conserved proteins that interact with their associated cyclin-dependent kinases (Cdks) to regulate different stages of cell cycle progression depending on their oscillating expression levels. However, the role of class II cyclins, which primarily act as transcription factors and whose expression remains constant throughout the cell cycle, is less well understood. As a classic example of a transcriptional cyclin, cyclin C forms a regulatory sub-complex with its partner kinase Cdk8 and two accessory subunits Med12 and Med13 called the Cdk8-dependent kinase module (CKM). The CKM reversibly associates with the multi-subunit …

Reward Improves Response Inhibition By Enhancing Attentional Capture, Yanqing Wang, Todd S Braver, Shouhang Yin, Xueping Hu, Xiangpeng Wang, Antao Chen

2010-2019 OA Pubs

Reward plays a crucial role in enhancing response inhibition. While it is generally assumed that the process of response inhibition involves attentional capture and the stopping of action, it is unclear whether this reflects a direct impact of reward on response inhibition or rather an indirect mediation via attentional capture. Here, we employed a revised stop-signal task (SST) that separated these two cognitive elements, by including a continue signal that required the same motor response as in go trials, but also attention to a cue, as in stop trials. We first confirmed the engagement of the right inferior frontal gyrus …

Incidental Renal Cell Carcinoma In Pelvic Malignancies, Fatima Shaukat, Muhammad Atif Mansha, Nasir Ali, Agha Muhammad Hammad Khan, Ahmed Nadeem Abbasi

Department of Radiation Oncology

Simultaneous diagnosis of renal cell carcinoma with pelvic malignancies is rare but a well-documented phenomenon. It is not uncommon to have incidental renal masses on imaging done for investigating other tumors. There are no established guidelines for the treatment of patients with dual malignancies. The management of such patients is challenging and requires a multidisciplinary approach. We present a series of three cases with a diagnosed pelvic malignancy but further workup revealed a kidney tumor. Both the malignancies were evaluated individually and diagnosed as two different primary neoplastic lesions. This case series examines each distinct patient's presentation, discusses the diagnosis, …

Analysis For Science Librarians Of The 2018 Nobel Prize In Physiology Or Medicine: The Life And Work Of James P. Allison And Tasuku Honjo, Neyda V. Gilman

Library Scholarship

On October 1, 2018, James P. Allison and Tasuku Honjo were awarded the 2018 Physiology or Medicine Nobel for their work leading to Immune Checkpoint Inhibition (ICI). ICI is the fourth pillar of cancer treatment and has been used to treat previously un-treatable cancers. Allison discovered that the protein CTLA-4 acts as a T cell brake while Honjo discovered another T cell brake, PD-1. Releasing these brakes allows the immune system to attack tumors, sometimes leading to complete elimination. While there is still more research to be done, Allison’s and Honjo’s work is a breakthrough in cancer immunotherapy.
