It was identified that there were opportunities to enhance the care of the inpatient oncology patient when they were not on the Medical and Oncology Unit. Upon completing leadership rounding, patients identified that they did not receive consistent oncology specific interventions when they were transferred to a higher level of care.

AngioMax is a single dose heparin alternative introduced in 2002 that is used in cardiac patients undergoing percutaneous intervention (PCI). Bivalirudin costs $377 per dose; heparin is less than $15 per dose. Noting practice variations, the Cath Lab set out to eliminate unnecessary pharmacy cost for PCI patients by:
- Using current literature to inform clinical care
- Standardizing practice
- Using data to track and guide implementation

This article describes a qualitative research study using a semi-structured interview process to describe barriers surrounding medication access, use, and adherence for recently discharged patients of a federally qualified health center. Common themes which emerged were: 1) Team assumptions regarding patient plans to access or appropriately use discharge medications negatively impact adherence; 2) Unmet expectation for care coordination between primary care physician (PCP) and hospital; 3) Disconnect between patients and health care workers leads to disengagement; and 4) Lack of personal contact hinders access to services.

The prevalence of edentulism is common worldwide. While improvements in access to healthcare and dental care are reducing the prevalence rate of edentulism, the rapidly growing number of elderly as a percent of the global population will sustain a need for denture therapy for the foreseeable future. While denture use has positive impacts on the quality of life, their use is associated with some problems and risks. Denture stomatitis, a chronic infection-related inflammatory disorder of the oral mucosa, is extremely common and has been reported to occur in up to two-thirds of denture wearers. Importantly, epidemiology studies have shown edentulism …

Determining The Barriers To Prenatal Care Entry Within The First Trimester By Evaluation Of Prenatal Care Surveys And Questionnaires, Joycelyn Akamune
Master of Public Health Program Student Publications
Background: Prenatal care (PNC) within the first trimester is associated with improved fetal and maternal health outcomes. Improved PNC is necessary to prevent negative birth outcomes such as low birth weight and infant mortality, which have significant impact on birth outcome rates. Improving access to PNC in the first trimester involves removing barriers to care. A brief survey distributed to expectant mothers is a simple way to define these barriers. Many small community health centers do not use surveys to gather patient information. By reaching this population, barriers to PNC can be better understood and mitigated using community resources decreasing …

Mirro Center Articles
OBJECTIVES: Using predictive modeling techniques, we developed and compared appointment no-show prediction models to better understand appointment adherence in underserved populations.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: We collected electronic health record (EHR) data and appointment data including patient, provider and clinical visit characteristics over a 3-year period. All patient data came from an urban system of community health centers (CHCs) with 10 facilities. We sought to identify critical variables through logistic regression, artificial neural network, and naïve Bayes classifier models to predict missed appointments. We used 10-fold cross-validation to assess the models' ability to identify patients missing their appointments.
RESULTS: Following data …

Two-Phase Management In A Developing Class Iii Malocclusion With The Aid Of Rapid Maxillary Expander And Facemask, Chih-Hsiang Chan, Chin-Yun Pan, Jung-Hsuan Cheng
Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics
A 7-year 10-month-old boy with skeletal Class III malocclusion was treated in two phases. In phase one, rapid maxillary expansion (RME) and facemask was applied for early intervention in a cervical vertebral maturation (CVM) stage of CS2. After RME and facemask treatment, decompensation of maxillary and mandibular incisors was noted, as well as an improved skeletal Class III jaw relationship with reduction of the A point-nasion-B point (ANB) angle. Later in phase two, a full mouth fixed edgewise appliance was begun to correct the details of malocclusion. The total treatment duration was 5 years and 5 months (stage 1, 9 …

Occupational Therapy | Critically Appraised Papers Series
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a working-memory program to improve the cognitive status of people with multiple sclerosis (MS). Given the increasing use of technology in modern-day society, further research is required to provide evidence supporting working-memory training devices that are easily accessible for people with memory deficits.

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a systemic condition that presents not only motor but also nonmotor symptoms, as a result of dopamine deficiency in the basal ganglia. Rehabilitation typically focuses on motor deficits, however, despite the fact that nonmotor symptoms have a significant impact on quality of life. The researchers of this study investigated the effectiveness of dance on motor functions, cognitive functions, and mental symptoms of individuals with PD. They chose dance as their intervention because it has been shown to activate the basal ganglia as well as improve mood. In addition to motor function and mood, the researchers also …

The Comprehensive Pt Management Of A Patient With Chronic Low Back Pain And Lumbar Radiculopathy: A Case Report, Robin Mcguire
Case Report Papers
Background and Purpose: Low back pain is the most common health problem among older adults resulting in pain and disability. Lumbar radiculopathy is a disabling condition causing low back pain that radiates into the lower extremity along the sensory distribution of the spinal nerve root. The purpose of this case report is to describe a comprehensive physical therapy plan for a patient with chronic low back pain and lumbar radiculopathy that included: therapeutic exercises using directional preference, interferential current, and manual traction. Case Description: The patient was a 60-year-old male with lumbar radiculopathy due to nerve root compression. He presented …
The Impact Of Schizophrenia On Copd Readmission Rate Among Hospitalized South Carolinians, Emilienne Y. Watonsi
The Impact Of Schizophrenia On Copd Readmission Rate Among Hospitalized South Carolinians, Emilienne Y. Watonsi
DNP Research Projects
Due to elevated readmission costs, the Affordable Care Act established the Hospital Readmission Reduction Program in 2012 to curb the 30-day readmission rates. COPD and schizophrenia are two very expensive diseases, COPD national medical costs is projected to be $49.0 billion in 2020; the cost of schizophrenia was 155.7 billion in 2013. The main objective of this study was to determine if schizophrenia is a significant predictor of 30-day readmission following hospitalization for acute exacerbation of COPD after adjusting for age, gender, anxiety, smoking status, T2DM, chronic ischemic heart disease, and GERD. Methods: A retrospective cohort design was used to …
