Role Of Interventional Radiology In The Management Of Peripheral Vascular Malformations: A Tertiary Care Center Experience., Misbah Tahir, Muhammad Anees Mumtaz, Anum Sultan, Raza Sayani
Department of Radiology
Peripheral vascular malformations (PVMs) represent a wide spectrum of vascular abnormalities occurring due to anomalous connections between arteries, veins, capillaries, and lymphatic channels at the microscopic level, in different combinations. They are rare and challenging to treat. Different operators may have different approaches based on their experience and expertise. Sclerotherapy either alone or in combination with embolization has been used as an independent method for the treatment of PVMs. Purpose The aim of this study is to assess the safety and efficacy of sclerotherapy and embolization, with or without surgery, for the treatment of peripheral vascular malformations, based on our …

Qingke, the local name of hulless barley in the Tibetan Plateau, is a staple food for Tibetans. The availability of its reference genome sequences could be useful for studies on breeding and molecular evolution. Taking advantage of the third-generation sequencer (PacBio), we de novo assembled a 4.84-Gb genome sequence of qingke, cv. Zangqing320 and anchored a 4.59-Gb sequence to seven chromosomes. Of the 46,787 annotated 'high-confidence' genes, 31 564 were validated by RNA-sequencing data of 39 wild and cultivated barley genotypes with wide genetic diversity, and the results were also confirmed by nonredundant protein database from NCBI. As some gaps …

Host-bacterial interactions at mucosal surfaces require recognition of the bacteria by host cells enabling targeted responses to maintain tissue homeostasis. It is now well recognized that an array of host-derived pattern recognition receptors (PRRs), both cell-bound and soluble, are critical to innate immune engagement of microbes via microbial-associated molecular patterns (MAMP). This report describes the use of a nonhuman primate model to evaluate changes in the expression of these sensing molecules related to aging in healthy gingival tissues. Macaca mulatta aged 3-24 years were evaluated clinically and gingival tissues obtained, RNA isolated and microarray analysis conducted for gene expression of …

A Comparison Of Oral And Intravenous Mouse Models Of Listeriosis, Michelle G. Pitts, Sarah E. F. D'Orazio
Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications
Listeria monocytogenes is one of several enteric microbes that is acquired orally, invades the gastric mucosa, and then disseminates to peripheral tissues to cause systemic disease in humans. Intravenous (i.v.) inoculation of mice with L. monocytogenes has been the most widely-used small animal model of listeriosis over the past few decades. The infection is highly reproducible and has been invaluable in deciphering mechanisms of adaptive immunity in vivo, particularly CD8+ T cell responses to intracellular pathogens. However, the i.v. model completely bypasses the gut phase of the infection. Recent advances in generating both humanized mice and murinized bacteria, as well …

Acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND), or early mortality syndrome (EMS), causes high mortality in cultivated penaeid shrimps, which leads to heavy losses for shrimp farming industry. V. parahaemolyticus with a toxin PirAB-encoding extrachromosomal plasmid are considered as common pathogenic agents. The present study aimed to assess the effects of potential probiotics on growth and resistance of shrimp to AHPND infection. Results confirmed typical clinical signs and histopathological features in AHPND-infected shrimps. Among 11 Vibrio isolates from AHPND-infected shrimps, strain XN9 was the most virulent and was identified as V. paraheamolyticus using AP3-based PCR amplification and API 20E kits. In vitro …

Intraoperative Femoral Head Dislodgement During Total Hip Arthroplasty: A Report Of Four Cases, Ahmed Siddiqi, Carl T. Talmo, James V. Bono
Orthopedic Surgery Resident Research
Dislodgment of trial femoral heads and migration into the pelvis during total hip arthroplasty is a rarely reported complication with limited published cases. There are three primary mechanisms of femoral head separation: dislodgement during reduction attempt, disassociation from anterior dislocation while assessing anterior stability, and during dislocation after implant trialing. If the trial femoral migrates beyond the pelvic brim, it is safer to finish the total hip arthroplasty and address the retained object after repositioning or in a planned second procedure with a general surgeon. We recommend operative retrieval since long-term complications from retention or clinical results are lacking.

Invisible No More: Bringing Awareness To Mental Health In Older Adults Living In Rural Minnesota, Abigail Schaper, Carley Ledoux, Kristry Danielson
Master of Social Work Student Policy Advocacy Briefs
Approximately 8 million Americans 65 years of age and older have mental health disorders. It is estimated that these numbers could reach 14.4 million by 2030. Minnesotans turning 65 in this decade (about 285,000) will be greater than the past four decades combined (Aging: MN State Demographic Center, 2018). Anxiety and depression are two of the more common mental health disorders in older adults and are associated with severe consequences, including life dissatisfaction, illness, and mortality. With this growth comes many barriers. The rural mental health system is not equipped to address this growth. The system is underfunded, largely uncoordinated, …

Master of Social Work Student Policy Advocacy Briefs
What is Social-Emotional Development? The foundation for lifelong mental health, including social and emotional development, is established early in life and shaped by children's relationships with parents, caregivers, and peers. This foundation is critical to all aspects of healthy development and growth in early childhood. Social-emotional development can be defined as "the capacity to form secure relationships; experience, express, and manage a range of emotions; and learn and explore one's environment."
Why is it Important? When children fail to develop social-emotionally, mental health symptoms begin to emerge and can "cause distress, interfere with relationships, limit the child's participation in daily …

The Social Isolation Epidemic: A Public Health Concern, Jolynne Bockman, Allison Frandrup, Hannah Miner
Master of Social Work Student Policy Advocacy Briefs
Social isolation kills. Loneliness and social isolation raise the likelihood of coronary heart disease and stroke, result in poor cardiovascular and mental health outcomes, and drastically increase the likelihood of death. Resulting health implications that stem from real or perceived physical or emotional remoteness include a spectrum of harsh realities ranging from feelings of low self-worth to reduced work capacity to attempts to harm oneself. Social isolation does not have to become the defining reality of modern life. Attention to the vast loneliness spreading through diverse populations across the state is desperately needed as a means to combat this modern …

A Spline-Assisted Semiparametric Approach To Nonparametric Measurement Error Models, Fei Jiang, Yanyuan Ma
COBRA Preprint Series
Nonparametric estimation of the probability density function of a random variable measured with error is considered to be a difficult problem, in the sense that depending on the measurement error prop- erty, the estimation rate can be as slow as the logarithm of the sample size. Likewise, nonparametric estimation of the regression function with errors in the covariate suffers the same possibly slow rate. The traditional methods for both problems are based on deconvolution, where the slow convergence rate is caused by the quick convergence to zero of the Fourier transform of the measurement error density, which, unfortunately, appears in …

Angioleiomyoma (Vascular Leiomyoma) Of The Oral Cavity, Swati Y. Rawal, Yeshwant B. Rawal
School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications
A 70-year-old male presented with a slow growing, dome shaped and painless mass of the hard palate. The mass was excised. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of a angioleiomyoma (vascular leiomyoma). A leiomyoma is an uncommon benign tumor of smooth muscle differentiation. True leiomyomas of the oral cavity are rare and most oral tumors are derived from the smooth muscle of walls of blood vessels. Therefore, they are called vascular leiomyomas or angioleiomyomas. Clinically, they may resemble a myriad other conditions both benign and malignant. A definitive diagnosis depends upon histopathological examination of the biopsied tissue in correlation with the …

Comment On U.S. Department Of Health And Human Services Rule, Public Rights/Private Conscience Project
Center for Gender & Sexuality Law
In medical facilities across the country, doctors whose conscience would require them to perform a sterilization on a patient who requests one, offer truthful information about accessing abortion services, or provide comprehensive LGBTQ+ health care are forbidden from doing so by their employer. The conscience of such medical providers is entirely ignored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service’s (HHS) recently proposed rule that purports to “ensure that persons or entities” providing health care “are not subjected to certain practices or policies that violate conscience, coerce, or discriminate.” As explained in a comment submitted today by the Columbia …

Surviving Difference: Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals, Intergenerational Justice, And The Future Of Human Reproduction, Robyn Lee, Roxanne Mykitiuk
Articles & Book Chapters
Endocrine-disrupting chemicals have been identified as posing risks to reproductive health and may have intergenerational effects. However, responses to the potential harms they pose frequently rely on medicalised understandings of the body and normative gender identities. This article develops an intersectional feminist framework of intergenerational justice in response to the potential risks posed by endocrine-disrupting chemicals. We examine critiques of endocrine disruptors from feminist, critical disability and queer standpoints, and explore issues of race and class in exposures. We argue that responding to the risks posed by endocrine disruptors such as brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and phthalates requires developing a …

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the influence of prior use of carbamazepine (CBZ) and other antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) with a putatively similar mechanism of action (inhibition of voltage-gated sodium channels; VGSCs) on seizure outcomes and tolerability when converting to eslicarbazepine acetate (ESL), using data pooled from 2 controlled conversion-to-ESL monotherapy trials (studies: 093-045, 093-046).
METHODS: Adults with treatment-resistant focal (partial-onset) seizures were randomized 2:1 to ESL 1600 or 1200 mg once daily. The primary efficacy endpoint was study exit (meeting predefined exit criteria related to worsening seizure control) versus an historical control group. Other endpoints included change in seizure frequency, responder rate, …
