Current diagnostic thresholds vary, but a 5% volume difference between limbs is generally accepted to diagnose lymphedema. Newer research among women with breast cancer-related lymphedema established a 3% threshold for diagnosis of preclinical lymphedema. Understanding normal limb volume fluctuations and side to side differences is important to determine whether this 3% cut point for diagnosis of subclinical lymphedema should be made compared to same or contralateral limbs.

Sensorimotor Modulations By Cognitive Processes During Accurate Speech Discrimination: An Eeg Investigation Of Dorsal Stream Processing, David E. Jenson
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
Internal models mediate the transmission of information between anterior and posterior regions of the dorsal stream in support of speech perception, though it remains unclear how this mechanism responds to cognitive processes in service of task demands. The purpose of the current study was to identify the influences of attention and working memory on sensorimotor activity across the dorsal stream during speech discrimination, with set size and signal clarity employed to modulate stimulus predictability and the time course of increased task demands, respectively. Independent Component Analysis of 64–channel EEG data identified bilateral sensorimotor mu and auditory alpha components from a …
Targeting Cancer Stem Cells In Recurrent Lung Cancer., Karen T. Udoh
Targeting Cancer Stem Cells In Recurrent Lung Cancer., Karen T. Udoh
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer mortality in the United States. The development of drug resistance with cisplatin or platinum/taxane combination chemotherapies has led patients to suffer from recurrent lung cancer. These chemotherapy treatments target cancer cells but leave behind cancer stem cells (CSCs). CSCs are stem-like tumor cells that have the potential to differentiate and proliferate. This allows the cancer to relapse even after initial elimination of the tumor. Investigations were performed on a secondary metabolite from the Myrothecium fungus family called Verrucarin J (VJ) to see its effects in lung cancer cell lines. VJ significantly inhibits …
Strain Differences In Susceptibility To Cisplatin-Induced Renal Fibrosis, Gabrielle B. Oropilla
Strain Differences In Susceptibility To Cisplatin-Induced Renal Fibrosis, Gabrielle B. Oropilla
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses
Cisplatin is a potent chemotherapeutic; the dose-limiting side effect of this drug is nephrotoxicity, causing acute kidney injury (AKI) in 30% of adult patients. Patients with cisplatin-induced AKI are more likely to develop end stage renal diseases, particularly chronic kidney disease (CKD), which is marked by the development of fibrosis. Currently, there are no therapeutic interventions for cisplatin-induced kidney injury, which may be due to limitations in the mouse model used to study this type of injury. We have previously developed a repeated dosing regimen of cisplatin (mice treated with 7 mg/kg once a week for 4 weeks, mice sacrificed …

In-Vitro Simulation Of Acute Ischemic Stroke, Paolo Garcia
Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) is a condition that involves the occlusion of a blood vessel within the brain, effectively preventing the passage of oxygen and nutrients. AIS is highly prevalent in the United States, where nearly 795,000 strokes happen per year and 87% of those are ischemic. From a medical standpoint, the obstructing clot can be removed with the use of a stroke retrieval device. However, a need arises for testing the aforementioned devices on a patient’s specific vascular geometries in order to increase the likelihood of a successful procedure. Outlined is a process for developing a physical simulation of …

Bridging The Gap Between Food Insecurity And Subsequent Child Body Mass: Mediating Effects Of Dietary Quality And Feeding Styles In Low-Income Hispanic Preschoolers, Nipa Kamdar
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Background: Low-income Hispanic preschoolers face disproportionately high prevalence of food insecurity (FI) and obesity. Consumption of low-cost, energy-dense foods to compensate for FI leads to excess body-mass. FI parents may adopt feeding styles that contribute to decline in children’s dietary quality. Feeding style describes the amount of demandingness (i.e., control of children’s eating) and responsiveness (i.e., warmth used to express demandingness). FI may indirectly contribute to obesity through dietary quality and feeding style.
Purpose: This study investigated: 1. if dietary quality mediated the relationship between food security status (FSS) at Time 1 (T1) and child body-mass at Time 2 (T2), …
In Vitro Aortic Arch Flow Model For Vector Flow Imaging Testing, Jackson Mosley
In Vitro Aortic Arch Flow Model For Vector Flow Imaging Testing, Jackson Mosley
Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Pediatric stenosis is the narrowing of the aorta at the aortic valve, above the aortic valve, or below the aortic valve. Typically, this disease’s severity is diagnosed by conventional Doppler ultrasound methods, or echocardiography. Conventional Doppler can sometimes overestimate the pressure gradient over the area of stenosis, diagnosing some cases of PAS to be more severe than they actually are. This causes earlier intervention than is desired in children. A new US modality, Vector Flow Imaging (VFI), is an angle-independent US imaging method that can potentially more accurately quantify peak blood flow velocities and pressure gradients across stenotic sections of …
Comparison Of Varying Tissue Freezing Methods On Murine Colonic Tissue, James Hughes
Comparison Of Varying Tissue Freezing Methods On Murine Colonic Tissue, James Hughes
Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Histology often requires a tissue specimen to be embedded so that it may be sectioned, stained, and mounted on a microscope slide for viewing. One common method of tissue embedding for rapid histology is freezing, since freezing allows tissue to be stored without the need for fixing. Frozen tissue is often embedded in a medium such as Optimal Cutting Temperature (OCT) compound so that it can be sectioned using a cryostat. However, factors such as ice-crystal formation during the freezing process can cause damage to the tissue. As such, the protocol used to freeze the tissue can affect the quality …

The Influence Of Carbon Composite And Plastic Ankle Foot Orthoses On Balance And Gait In Individuals With Multiple Sclerosis: A Pilot Study, Hana Goubeaux, Carmen Macy, Tabatha Trauner, Kurt Jackson
University of Dayton Doctor of Physical Therapy Annual Research Symposium
Multiple sclerosis (MS) can cause lower extremity weakness which may impair balance and gait. Ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs) are frequently prescribed to reduce the effects of these impairments. Despite numerous recent advances in the design and materials used for AFOs, there is a lack of evidence to guide clinicians in effective AFO prescription. The purpose of this research was to compare the effects of an anterior shell carbon AFO with a traditional plastic AFO on measures of balance and gait performance.

Each year one in every three adults over the age of 65 experience a fall resulting in serious injury and in some instances death. In this population, falling injuries are the leading cause of death and are associated with the greatest number of nonfatal injuries and trauma hospital admissions. Since balance and muscle performance decreases as one ages, it is vitally important to assess these factors as part of a comprehensive strategy to monitor and predict fall risk. Previous data analysis of the Repetitive Step Test (RST) has shown that there is a significant performance difference between non-fallers and recurrent …

Enhanced Production Of Pro-Il-1Βeta Contributes To Immunopathology During The Coinfection Of Influenza A Virus And Streptococcus Pneumoniae, Angeline E. Rodriguez
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Viral bacterial coinfections are known to cause severe pneumonia, especially in the elderly and in pediatric patients. Antibiotics like β-Lactams kill the bacteria but fail to improve symptoms suggesting a faulty immune system may play an important role in the disease. Interleukin-1β (IL-1β) is an important immune signaling cytokine responsible for inflammation. It exists as an inactive precursor that can be activated by caspase-1 containing inflammasomes (multi-protein complex). Influenza A virus (IAV) and Streptococcus pneumoniae (S. pneumoniae) activate the inflammasome through the NOD-like receptor protein NLRP3 and/or AIM2. Previous reports in mice indicate that IL-1β levels are dramatically …
Controlling The Uncontrollable: Understanding The Relationships Between Psychological Distress, Physical Impairment, And Acceptance Among Women With Gynecological Cancer, Kirby L. Williams
Controlling The Uncontrollable: Understanding The Relationships Between Psychological Distress, Physical Impairment, And Acceptance Among Women With Gynecological Cancer, Kirby L. Williams
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
As women age, the risk for being diagnosed with any gynecological cancer increases. Despite outnumbering the number of breast cancer diagnoses in a given year, there are significantly fewer studies addressing gynecological cancers. Treatment for gynecological cancers can be incredibly debilitating, both physically and psychologically. Although previous studies have evaluated and shown a relationship between physical impairment and perceived control on psychological distress in cancer patients during treatment, none have evaluated the influence of willingness and acceptance. The present study sought to expand this theory by assessing 25 gynecological cancer participants via self-report measures. Utilizing structural equation modelling, a moderated …
